Loved the boots Garlett wore last year so great to see the players and clubs get behind his initiative and the whole team have them this year. Also, this from the article: “Nev [Jetta] gave a great presentation to the players the other day and it highlighted the great contribution made by Indigenous players,” he (Jones) said. These show the great (deserved) respect by our team being shown to their indigenous teammates and their culture. Just hope Jetta follows Jeff and signs up again soon!

The HS article on McD holding off was a false alarm! I eat humble pie at my doubts. This is an interesting stat form the article: What makes Melbourne’s scoring even more impressive is their spread of goalkickers — they currently rank No. 1 the AFL with an average of nine individual contributors a game. If I recall correctly we are in the top 5 for scores kicked this year. Not bad for a team that in the last few years struggled to kick more than 60-70pts and regularly thrashed by 10 goals!!

Recruited from Glenelg so would further guess Crows...unless from Port territory SA folk generally barrack for the Crows. The AFL average (said to be around $320k) is the average across 800 players. Its a mathematical average not what the 'average player' gets. With only about 90 AFL players (ie top 11%) earning more than $500k there are a lot of very good players earning not much more than the average of $320k. (Note - figures before the new CBA and the new sal cap). But I agree with your point that TMc is worth more than what 'picket' suggests. Is he in the AFL's top 90 - 100 players ie over $500k? Only he and the club can answer that one. Mahoney is on record as saying by the end of this year we will have our player contracts lined up with what the club thinks the player is worth so I think the club would make him a very fair offer that reflects this value.

Spot on SPC98. Here are Plapp's comments for last week on Frost: Frosty had 14 possessions, four marks and had six rebounds. It was a really pleasing effort from Sam. The week before he only completed a quarter and a bit, due to a slight injury, but playing in a different position on the weekend, he was able to defend really strongly. He was able to give us some real offensive run from our backline. Frosty also used the ball really well and his aerial contest work was also a strong point of his game. Back to McD, I would sat that with Frost developing as a defender it would make us less reliant on TMc extending his contract. If he stays he stays, if not so be it. There will be options for us.

As I understand it the CBA has minimums eg Base Pay (which varies according to whether a rookie, draftee or experienced) and Match Payments (which I think are the same regardless of games played but not sure). The CBA also covers a host of conditions eg annual leave and payments for superannuation etc The big ticket $ variations for individual contracts may include: 1 Leadership positions (more for the captain) 2 Promotional work for the Club or Sponsors. There are also 'Additional Service Agreement' (ASA) usually for marquee players who are drawcards eg Buddy, Judd. These have taxation concessions so are quite attractive to players. Not sure if these or part of these are outside the salary cap. Limited to just a few per club. 3 Work for sponsors paid for by a sponsor which is separate to the ASA. Could be a club sponsor eg Judd had a contract with Visy or a non club sponsor eg supplier of their boots. Not sure where the boundaries are for 2 and 3 4 Polling position for B & F (which would be based on coaches votes each week but presumably are not only in game performance but also include all the behaviours and disciplines the coaches want re training, off-field, attitudes, teamwork etc etc 5 Winning other club awards eg Best Clubman 6 Maybe the number of games played in a season in limited situations. 7 Any 'premium' the club wants to give a player above the minimums. This is how clubs are able to stagger contract payments to front-load or back-load contracts to suit their salary cap and list requirements. The 2015 average payment was around $325,000 (not sure if this includes rookies, I suspect not) and about 90 players earnt over $500k. I think the salary cap atmo is $10m per club ie $180m. The AFLPA is going for a % of 'Total Revenue' amount for distribution to players altho according to Patrick Smith in The Australian today, this is totally doomed. He puts a convincing case.

This latest development looks to me that he has been open to a specific offer, received it and now walked away from the table. Good on MFC for not upping the price to 'buy' his signature. No wonder Healy has been at him in the media recently. Selfish sod! If he doesn't want to be part of what the club is building and just looking out for himself then just go,Tom!! Reminds me of an ex MFC player of the same name!!

Its slowly moving upward. With a bit of luck we can still make 40,000 before the cut off date of 31, July. On a slightly different but vaguely related note - has anyone seen the MFC 'We are Melbourne' ad aired anywhere during the season? I really liked it. A targeted advertising blitz might really help membership numbers.

I didn't say anything about Gawn being dropped or not being #1 ruck...quite the opposite!!. I said a 6 year player doesn't need 'resting' from a game, rest him up forward if necessary, and if not injured he should play.

Why would anyone leave out Gawn? Ok, in the last few weeks he had quieter games than we are used to in 2016. 6 year players don't need 'resting'. And as Roos said the coaches have emphasised to Max that he only need to meet their expectations (which coaches are very happy with) rather than external expectations. Max can't be among the vote getters every week but that doesn't mean he isn't doing his job! And maybe he is trying to do too much to be among 'the best ruckman in the league'. Play him for less minutes and let Pedersen and Watts pick up the time. Max can rest forward. But please, unless he is injured Max should play.

Feel for Salem. Had a great first year. 2nd year ruined by major hamstring injuries. 3rd year stalled by injury and illness. At least we know he is in good hands and our club will give him all the attention and treatment the illness requires.

Oops! My Bad...not Viney. It is a thyroid problem with Salem and he may be out for quite a while. Could be quite serious. Helps explain why he has had a flat start to the year. Wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Viney received a decent knock in the GC game last week, was taken off and didn't go back on the ground. He seemed rather stiff when he moved around. Maybe the scans are the after affects of that or maybe he received another knock against the Lions. At least we have Vand, Tyson and Salem to come back in if Viney is out this week. By my reckoning Rich received votes from both coaches. Billy Stretch and Jesse Hogan could be the other way round ie 5/3 and 4/4 respectively. Height is irrelevant? How many on here (not necessarily you mo64) have lamented over recent weeks that we are too short down back? Forward lines are getting taller. Back lines need to do likewise. He is out muscled because he is 82 kgs. As I said there is no way of fast tracking his physical growth (unless a 2012 EFC program is adopted...said with tongue in cheek! ). Just saying for people to understand and trust what the coaches are doing. Roos has said we will have inconsistent results (ie lose some games) because we are a young side. Losing games because of inexperience may not be acceptable to some supporters. Its the old Catch 22 in a way! Dunn seems to not be part of our future (wouldn't be surprised if he is traded this year) so not sure who else we are going to play down back. It seems to me that when Oscar or Wagner are rested, Lumumba will be the preferred replacement. I would expect that barring injuries the 3 will be rotated during the year. I have no doubt we will be applauding Oscar's development in due course. Young players will be rested as required, including Oscar. But I like that he is getting some AFL games while growing (in all senses) especially as we have little backline depth.

Have we exceeded his 'improvement' expectations? One step close to getting his signature, perhaps. His performances over the the last month seem to have quietened his detractors making for more enjoyable footy for him. Signs are all positive. The outline of the new CBA will be known in the next month or two. So, hopefully if he is to sign he will before end of the season.
