Out of interest do you think "making finals' in 2021 would be a sufficient KPI to continue the contract into 2022?
-
fwiw, a few weeks ago Ross Lyon was asked on FC about coaching GWS (when they were not performing). He said he wasn't interested in coaching 'at the minute'. As Wilson sits on that panel with him there is a fair chance she wasn't guessing about mfc interest in him.
-
That he is prepared to publicly name Viney suggests he has had at least a warm reception from his Manager and that MFC have been informed. Cook is too smart to come out and blindside a club by publicly naming its Vice-captain.

I thought that was interesting and while it pleased me that there is an 'out' in 2021 it made me wonder what that KPI might be. As the contract was made just after the 2018 prelim the KPI for 2021 (3 years later) can't simply be "making finals". That would imply the club expected the 2018 performance to drop then hover around the middle of the ladder in 2019 and 2020 which would be a surprise. If it was such a mediocre expectation my question of the club would be why extend for 3 years or why not wait to see how 2019 panned out. Common sense says they wouldn't. The 3 year extension means they had higher expectations in 2019/20 which one hopes was built into the contract. On that logic one would expect a 2021 KPI to be winning x finals or reaching the prelim. ie at least what we did in 2018. No one would expect "linear" improvement from 2018 but the same result 3 years later is reasonable. So a KPI for 2021 can't simply be "making finals". Just scraping into finals isn't a sufficiently high KPI to justify a 3 year extension. And tbh if we just scrape into finals or exit quickly that won't be enough to convince me Goodwin should be there in 2022. So hope the 2021 KPI is a high enough bar that non-achievement allows us to exit the contract.

As a woman it is sad that you attack another woman who is just doing her job. You may not like how she goes about it which is your right but the vitriol toward her is unnecessary and not very becoming. Criticise her for sure but there is a more appropriate way to do so. I feel I can speak for the few females who post on this site. The guys are very fair and supportive. Occasionally someone has a cheap shot at me at being a female or makes some gender related remark but always one of the more considered guys steps in to my defence and takes them to task, which I appreciate. It would be easy to say they shouldn't take cheap shots at me but they take cheap shots at each other; its just the way it works. All I can say is give respect and respect is returned.

They've run it like a little fiefdom for years and no-one has challenged them and Pert let it continue by not getting someone outside to do last year's FD review. So no wonder they were surprised. Its about bl. . dy time, I say.

Did anyone else notice this: "Bartlett's accusation that the team had "trashed" the Melbourne jumper,...followed private calls for someone in the club outside of the coach to hold the Demons and the football department to account. Neither Goodwin nor his head of football Josh Mahoney saw it coming". I've been arguing for Mahoney to be held accountable for 2.5 years so not unahppy his accountability has been highlighted. This part might please some on here: "Melbourne have never quite given up on luring Alastair Clarkson back to the club and Ross Lyon remains an active target".

What makes you think we will get a 1st round pick if he goes as an FA?
-
With you all the way with not wanting Jack to go. If it was handled in the right way Jack losing the co-capt shouldn't still be festering for Jack. His good mate Ollie Wines lost his co-cap at the same time as is about to re contract. Perhaps what is important is why Jack lost the co-cap and if those reasons have been fully worked through with him. I truly hope so.
-
That a club like Geelong see Jack as a replacement player for Selwood says it all, imv. I see Jack as a bellwether of where our club is at: as the son of a club great, vice captain, heart and soul Dee decides to go what do people think will happen next year when Salem is an RFA, the following year when Petracca and Brayshaw are RFA's and not long after when Oliver and Weideman are RFA's? How long before Rivers, Kozzie and TJ opt to go back to WA? Have no doubt other clubs will be asking questions of all of them. So lets be careful what we wish for and not be so willing to jettison Jack.

Agreed. An impassioned plea by one G.Lyon on SEN: “This is a guy who is not as clean and pure but I talk often about knowing what you are going to get with players which is the number one quality for me. “You know what you are going to get with him every time. It’s heart, it’s soul, it’s commitment, it’s body on the line, it’s ferocious competitiveness, it’s a refusal to concede. “I don’t know what’s going through his mind but I know he’s appreciated, loved, wanted and respected and I’d be shattered if he left from a Melbourne point of view,” he added. “I’ve thought long and hard about it, whether there is some sameness to this midfield, and there is some truth to that but rather than just get rid of some, try and add to it without losing someone of the quality of Jack. Jnr, I'm with you and Garry. A Club just doesn't let players like Jack go. It just doesn't.

In his selections press conf, Goodwin said: Confident of keeping Viney, TMac is a keeper Bennell will be given a new contract brayshaw-to-have-surgery-demons-confident-of-retaining-viney

Thanks to @titan_uranus I've learnt 'Edit' is now in the 3 dots on the top right hand side of your post.
-
Thanks for all the work. I'm not seeing an 'Edit' option on my posts. I use Firefox if that is of any help.

Above post is a duplicate, sort of. Tried to edit prior post and system created a new post. Now I can't delete or change either. ?

If the AFL doesn't adjust the compensation threshold/formula down offers could easily fall into lower compensation categories as the sal cap is being slashed post covid. Geelong aren't known for paying high $ to get players. Those two things would make it difficult to get a 1st round or end of first round comp pick. Clubs should start lobbying the AFL to change the thresholds.

Goodwin said our club should be more ruthless. He need look no further than Leon Cameron to learn what a ruthless coach does. The ball is in Goodwin's court to set the example of MFC ruthlessness, altho I fear it is too late to pull this season out of the fire.

Because that is what they do every year when in preparing the fixture. They then 'negotiate' decide who to favour with FTA, Night games, travel etc etc. The latest condensed fixture/travel for WB & Dees (and maybe other less favoured teams) looks to have the same in equitable AFL treatment they use for annual fixtures.
-
I read somewhere that 'the AFL approved WCE's request' to have their rnd 18 game on a Thur night so they could have an extended rest in WA before finals. Add the WB travel approvals and it suggests the AFL asked teams 'in contention' for their 'wish list' in the last rounds of the season. I guess they didn't see us as being in contention... I had been lulled into the belief we wouldn't good enough but now I'm think we've had our hands tied behind our back for most of the season. btw do you have a link to the article about the WB early travel etc
-
Its clear who the AFL wants in the finals. If we win our last two and WB lose either of Crows or Freo we make finals and they don't. The favouritism is appalling! WB haven't had a 2nd condensed fixture. At a quick glance shows they had and will have 6-7 days between games, in SE Qld or fly in the day before. Compare that to our horrendous stretch 4/5 day breaks, travel schedule and sleep deprivation after Alice. I had thought we just weren't good enough but now that the inequities are being exposed I really feel the AFL has favoured the big clubs and its perennial favourites. We are neither.

It was reported today that Ess have put their hat in the ring.

Jesse Hogan on the way out at Freo?
Lucifers Hero replied to Bizzell Blitz's topic in Melbourne Demons
Freo might pick up a chunk of his 2021 contract $ just free up a list spot for someone who can get on the park. Not sure Pies is a good place for his mental health. -
I have long said I want Viney to stay. To think he would stay because he bleeds red and blue, well same could be said of Daniher. Times have changed. And Viney at Port doesn't mean they give up Wines. They have some aging mid fielders and some young ones. Jack (and Ollie) fits nicely into that age group. The closer we get to EOS without a contract announcement for Jack the more nervous I get about him staying. Fingers crossed.
-
Btw Kozzie got fined, again, for a rough conduct charge. Yet nothing to the Freo players who flattened Viney and Hunt with body hits to the head. Would have expected fines for them at least. Nothing.

Agreed, there was only so much I could fit into a table. It is more of a discussion tool than a view on whether we were well done by or not.
