WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - LUKE JACKSON
Demon Dynasty replied to Lord Nev's topic in Melbourne Demons
Well that would be an extremely poor call on the club's behalf if that is the case BB we will agree to disagree on that strategy. The only other club that will bother to test GWS with an early bid is Sydney BB and they will lose as by that stage GWS will have used their pick 4 to take a bonus pick from the top 10. Meaning they only have to match with their rubbish picks from 40 down. After the Swans you are correct, why would anyone else bother knowing the same outcome is forthcoming. -

Except that (according to the MFC website) Weid weighed 13 kgs more than Bailey at the start of 2019 ? -

Not at all BB. Winning a bid on Green at 3 lands us a top 5/6 player in the draft (according to all the experts) but more than likely forces GWS to use pick 4 to take him (assuming they want him). They then miss out on using pick 4 on another player and we then get to pick up Jackson if he slips through to 10 or if someone else nabs him early others could slip through like a Young or an Ash. Imagine securing Green and Ash in this draft and still having a chance at say Taylor, Kozzy, Rivers or Schoenburg. If they do counter our bid we get Jackson anyway and potentially Ash or someone who slips through unexpected like a Young or a Kemp as we've taken GWS's bonus pick away. That's a fabulous result in any recruiting language. -

I think you will find the phantoms you are referring to are the ones with the 'likely' pick orders taken in to account BA once the media had some wind of who (roughly) was likely to bid for whom and also after the pick swaps were settled (approx Nov onwards). Most of the phantoms prior to that (October and earlier) based on pure rankings had him in the top 3 to 6 draftees. Someone correct me if im wrong but from my understanding the only reason they are saying he will go that low on draft night is because they believe we are going to fail to bid on him with 3 when that is the exact thing we should be doing. Failing to bid with the bid before their No.4 then allows GWS an extra free hit in the top 10 with their No.4 pick. The other clubs won't bother after that as the only bid that would really effect GWS is the one that forces them to use their pick 4...ie; the no.3 pick ....ours. Any bid after ours cant come till pick 5, the Swans, which will mean nothing as GWS can just match the bid with their next pick, pick 40 (plus the rest i assume), and also go in to deficit for 2020 assuming they don't have enough points to match a bid at 10 or wherever. -

Exactly what i said 4 hours ago in the phantom draft thread BB. Don't worry i know they know a whole stack more based on a stack more. That's why they are there and i'm here ?... https://demonland.com/forums/topic/47074-phantom-drafts/?do=findComment&comment=1782239 -

Very much in the top 6 to 10 mix from what i saw in the Nats DS. Best ruckman in the draft no arguments. A pick in the 6 to 10 range for a club that is very much in need of a quality ruckman? Certainly worth serious consideration. Would i personally take him with our pick 3 given our needs? It won't matter as my view is worth diddly squat but for mine there's just too much quality ahead that i would regret not snapping up. Pick 8 had we retained it? if i thought he was a genuine goal kicking forward option...sure. Pick 10? Unlikely he'll be there imv. Having said that DS there may not be as much fanfare but i think the clubs who have picks in that first 10 would have more than done their background checks, live game attendance, research and would be licking their chops at the prospect of landing any of Ash, Young, Henry, Green and others. Obviously some aren't realistic menu options but they would still love to land them somehow. Speaking of which, to help ourselves with pick 10 (or others out lower down if we still miss) we simply must bid on Green. Land him or not it's the correct winning strat imv and might help an Ash or someone slip through if we get lucky (assuming we don't nominate Young with 3). -

They might have said this but most are also not linked or spoken of as picking him up in the top 5 outside of GWS -
From where i sit, outside of effort and a fitness edge in favour of Weightman (and a great attitude/seemingly good character when interviewed, haven't seen Pickett interviewed but that means nothing) there's no real stand out sign that says either is going to be a much better player or a star vs the other not being so good JS. This is where we have to trust that Taylor & Co. are earning their coin and will choose well.
-
Won't know if many of them are a hit or not for years Murph. Some no doubt will hit the ground a little better than others who may not make it or might take 3 to 5 years to find their feet. Tough gig as a recruiter. Pretty sure we'll see a high level of effort, attack and pressure early on even if he takes a few years to hit his straps in other areas.

Doerre's latest and last take....has us taking Weightman with 10.... https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/28164931/every-club-every-pick-espn-full-afl-phantom-draft

More a medium sized half forward vs the likes of Weightman & Henry. A bit like Jeffy build wise so possibly more options in the air and playing off a wing at some stage down the track with a tank behind him. Has some tricks and major evasive skills / agility (2nd in the combine just behind Young) and LOVES a goal either side with little time or space when given the ball. 6 goals in 4 matches in the Nats is probably right up there with the best outputs in the carnival. Downsides: Not as consistent at this point (off the ball outside of goal scoring where he seems elite) as say a Henry or Weightman and the attack/pressure/2nd effort side appears to need a fair amount of work to get to the likes of those two. The good is very very good when going though and i reckon he could end up being Jeffy (cat) like around goals even with limited opportunites. Would happily take him from 15ish onwards on a needs basis and he is exactly what we need. Fits the potential ideal Jeffy replacement 'project player' bill perfectly. https://m.afl.com.au/draft/prospects https://afl.draftcentral.com.au/player/elijah-taylor/ According to Twomey the Hawks are supposedly attempting to trade up their 2nd pick somehow to try and snag him, interviewing him last week...(tweet from Twomey below)... ..."Elijah Taylor one of the mysteries of the draft. Hawthorn has shown real interest recently, interviewing him last week. The hugely talented forward is not for pick No.11 but their next picks get used on Finn Maginness. Is Taylor in their sights if they get another top-20 pick?"...

Taylor or Pickett. Failing those if they don't get through...Schoenburg ...if he gets through!

Poll: Who do you want with our first two picks?
Demon Dynasty replied to furious d's topic in Melbourne Demons
I noticed Green had a so so game (eg; vs SA) followed by a cracker (vs Vic Metro) where he matched Rowell and, only my op, but was the best player afield. Imv a very good sign from this match as he was up against the best rated in Rowell and they actually spent a bit of time matched up on each other. Would not hesitate to bid / take him with 3 either but who knows where we are at. Young and Ash next on 'best available' imv. Flip a coin i'd be happy to land either at 3. You didn't mention your preference with 10? If you can find that link to the Casey match that would be awesome pls. Been hunting that one for a while. -

I'm assuming you witnessed this one live Jack as it's nowhere to be seen on video. You don't mention Ash anywhere. Was he in this team? So on that basis would you would recommend a bid on Green with 3? Assuming it is matched we then nominate Young? Or? And what would you suggest we do with pick 10? I can't see either of Ash or Young slipping through to 10 if we don't hit them up early with 3. Would love to hear your take pls. -
If we are looking to land him, Kozzy appears to have more talent on his rude finger than most have in their whole body. The talent side shouldn't be an issue. It will be the effort, 2nd efforts and stamina to keep going and what will allow that is fitness. That will come down to a want and desire to take his game to a very high level. If he brings that look out. That and hopefully a few more centimetres / kilos will hold him in very good stead. And the other issue for me... what's to say we aren't targeting Weightman?
-
Watched him closely in his Nat games as many were keen on him early (me included). Just my amature take but not sure he'll be a Cripps type through the mid Red. Possibly a very handy one though and a solid utility also, particularly up forward. Lovely set shot action which should hold him in good stead when played / drifting forward. Loves a contested mark as well.
-
If that is the case then just take Weightman with 10 and aim for one of Bianco, Taylor or Schoenburg if they get through to 28 DD. If we picked up Schoenburg with 28 i would be ecstatic. Rate him roughly the equal 2nd best 'balanced' mid in the draft alongside the likes of Robertson and McGuiness and just ahead of Rantall. Rantall might turn out to be the pick of the crop with a few extra years in the system though. Very raw but has some explosive getaway speed combined with the ability to steady, lower the vision & hit up short targets on a lead. Schoenburg is doing that also but a little more consistent at this point vs Rantall, probably doesn't quite have the pure burst speed but seems strong through the core and beautifuly balanced with ball in hand.
-
Bianco, Taylor or Schoenburg (if any are still there) could work out quite nicely for pick 28.
-
I can't say i'm overly thrilled with the prospect either LT. I'm still not convinced in the benefit of trading away pick 8 either.

The final call... Cal Twomey's 2019 Phantom Draft: Top 30, your club's whispers - http://m.afl.com.au/news/2019-11-25/cal-twomeys-2019-phantom-draft-top-30-your-clubs-whispers

If we believe all the Young @ 3 chatter and the True Footy phantom, by giving up 8 we have effectively handed Freo an extra free hit probably giving them Young, Stephens & Henry. What a haul of outside finish / talent and three of the best ball users in this draft. Huge win for them.
-
Or possibly some Kiwi heritage?
-
I think that is more a stab at which players are likely to go where given needs and jungle drums PSD. Giving GWS a second stab at a top 5 player is a crime and for mere insurance we must bid on Green. If we get him even better. He is easily top 3 material from what i witnessed after giving the u18 replays a fair shake.
-
Doerre's latest take although they are saying his 'final' update will be out tomorrow so might not be much new here...Green gets a glowing review. Likens Young to a Paddy Ryder style ruckman. Check out Schoenburg also...one of the more under-rated mids imho from the u18s. Ranked 27th in this guide only a month ago, now into 15th. Guy is all class and a beautiful mover away from congestion...very quick thinker & slick with the disposal... https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/28148905/afl-draft-power-rankings-late-bolters-make-their-run
