RIP Robbie Flower - Sad Passing of a True Champion
Striker475 replied to KLV's topic in Melbourne Demons
Robbo just tweeted it and deleted it. My old man loved him. I was too young, but I know all about 'Do it for Robbie' and '87. Shattered. -
So how this has worked: Melbourne have to meet salary cap. Pay Frawley early to do so. Free agency comes in. AFL decides that because we paid Frawley in advance before FA comes in he is now a UFA. Hawthorn lowballs him as a result. He walks for finals. We've been screwed if we don't get pick 3 and the deal is 450k. We would have matched that. Equalization my arse.

Schroder's a yes for mine. Guy can play but stuck behind superstars. Would be up against Michie for that fringe spot. Burbury...ehh. Medium forwards lost their lustre for mine after we had that magnificent forward line of Bate, Dunn and Miller.

It's hard to know if this is good for us. On one hand, the football media is distracted between Essendon, the Brownlow and the GF. On the other...why would they not mention it?

My take right now: AFC East: Wide open. Will the Bills continue their run? Will the Jets front seven smash them to it? What about the Pats getting their two lines together? Dolphins aligning it all? AFC North: Similarly open. The Bengals are one of the top two AFC teams for mine, but the Steelers, Ravens and even the Browns could all make noise. AFC South: The Colts' to lose. Titans have issues, the Jags are still in rebuild (Bortle Kombat!) and the Texans have no real QB. AFC West: Denver are leading, but the Chargers look even better and the Chiefs appear to have shaken off some of Week 1. NFC North: The Pack has fallen away but the high-octane offenses of Detroit and Chicago have stepped up. NFC South: Jesus Christ Atlanta. The Saints appear to have lost something, and if Cam doesn't recover the Panthers won't get there. NFC East: Philly are improved, but Washington continue to surprise as do Dallas. NFC West: All of the Cards, Seahawks and 49ers are playoff teams. If the Niners drop many more they'll fall away quickly though.

People need to stop treating Port Adelaide as the rule and start treating them as the exception. The last club to mirror such a last-to-first mentality was ourselves back in the late 1990s. It's a rarity, not a commonality. The Geelong and Brisbane dynasties, Hawthorn's dominance and Sydney's continued excellence are a result of years of drafting and in all cases the result of various handouts - Geelong getting steals for father-son picks, Hawthorn getting PPs and Sydney getting the CoLA. In fact, I would argue that Port are the first club to seriously challenge teams that have had handouts (along with North, although to a lesser extent) since certainly Collingwood and arguably since they won the flag in 2004.

Grabbed this and posted it elsewhere with WJ at the top too, because that's a superbly measured piece.

To be fair, we're the club that's giving reportedly $500k/year to Cam Pedersen and gave quality coin to Shannon Byrnes. Plus Colin Young would know exactly how much we were up for in 2015 for Clark. I'd suggest that Young at least, if not MC himself, are after more coin.
