The 18 AFLW skippers were anonymously polled on which other club apart from their own is most likely to push into this year's Grand Final: Melbourne (eight votes), Brisbane (five votes), Adelaide Crows (four votes) and Fremantle (one vote).

Sarah Black has her at number 22 in her top 30 AFLW best players. Watching her at ground level you can really see that combination of footy smarts, toughness and elite skills. She’s only gonna get better.

Blues were generally uncompetitive but better in Q2. Dees have improved everywhere. West and Purcell were super in the middle, Casey Sheriff kicked 2 or 3 goals and did lots of good things. The new Irish girl Blaithin Mackie was really promising on debut and her teammates all swelled around her after she kicked a rippa goal in Q4 (the girls call her ‘B’). Lots to like. Hore was outstanding and the forward line worked well and no Duffy or Daisy. Gay behind the ball works well, Lampy was solid and young Wilson from Carlton looks good. Our midfield looked impressive today but in Round 1 against the giant bodies of Hatchard, Marinoff, Randall et al and at Norwood Oval we will have our work cut out. An exciting season awaits. From AFLW: Melbourne recruit Sabreena Duffy has been cleared of damage after leaving the field against the Bombers on Saturday. Duffy had appeared to re-injure her foot – which had a clean-out operation earlier this year – but scans are clear, and she remains in contention to play Carlton this weekend.

Clubs have until August 23 to sign injury replacement players should any listed athlete be moved to the inactive list before then. Eliza has been moved to the inactive list so we have an opportunity to sign another player.

Such a shame. Eliza was having a great pre-season, working hard on everything including her speed. Wishing her a full recovery.

Funny, I just quoted your post in the VFLW thread. Yes, expecting the Wales twins will thrive at their respective AFLW teams. Looking forward to meeting them against the Dees.

Lucy has been selected by Hawthorn AFLW at pick 22 and Stephanie by Essendon at pick 32. Good selections those. Expect them to do well.

Hmmm, Meggs was watching 7 news too. He also read this in the Mongrel Punt report on our game yesterday: Angus Brayshaw will be the recruit of the year in 2023. Mark it down now. He has not signed with the Dees and likely won’t, but whoever gets him is getting something special – a bloke who can play anywhere and do it well.

Meggs was in a corporate box tonight with mostly WA supporters. The Weagles supporters are a mostly disinterested lot in 2022 but the Freo ones are convinced they are getting Dogga and Gus (though they couldn’t recall his name)… Luke, the force is strong with this one…what a game!

Yes, Meggs forgot about Caris. Both Caris and Lucy Wales average 12 disposals per VFLW game and Maggie is ahead on hitouts (is anyone taller than her?) but Lucy averages more marks, tackles and scores per game.

Thanks @Dees_In_October really appreciate your reporting. The Wales rucking twins, Lucy and Stephanie, have impressed at VFLW level and wondered whether you think we might recruit one to understudy Lauren? Gillard seems like a natural tall back, reads the play well like a defender and has good kicking skills. Campbell is being developed as as a forward. Zanker is often thrown into the role but is better as a mid onballer. Parry has gone.

Good effort Werridee. Some thoughts: prefer to see Fitzsimon included, Paxy is better on a wing these days, West is only gonna get better, high hopes for improvement in Gillard. We have a strong group and will be amongst the top teams again.

Appreciate the nice report D_I_O, thank you. Meggs was also impressed by Wales and Gillard does her best work as a tall Harris Andrews-style back. Gosh, Eliza W was in everything. A contested footy ball-magnet with really good hands. If she could just master kicking the footy, she could become an AFLW star. Hmmm, the Pies will be a tough contest for Casey. Have they announced the game details yet?
