What number to put on my jumper? What do you have?
dee-eee replied to That's a Stretch's topic in Melbourne Demons
Bought my one and only jumper during the "Merger" nonsense fearing the worst. I'm now a senior citizen( member for 39 consecutive years ) but the "Tooheys" comes out of mothballs on "Jumper Day" as requested by Jimmy. Sure i feel a bit self concious but i also feel entitled ! -
Don't mind The Ox in small doses on SEN. He's a simple soul and something of a natural buffoon. I cringe but laugh at the same time when he seems to lack the common sense to moderate his "Australianisms" when interviewing overseas sporting identities. They can be perplexed into silence by his rhyming slang and "fair dinkums" !

Great Grand Finals: Melbourne v Essendon 1959
dee-eee replied to bush demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
One of the broadcasters ( slower talking- more "educated " accent ) is certainly ABC veteran Ken Dakin. -
Tim Lane destroys AFL's credibilty Great article in today's AGE by Tim Lane where he methodically disects the whole sorry Kieran Jack draft story. Can someone post the link ? The shenanigans are right up there with the $culls fiasco !!

So our amiable boofy players didn't produce a "Glee"--type performance. My favourite negative comments are : "makes me sick", "accepting mediocrity" and the wonderful "made to look incompetent and underprepared" !

Gee i hope all you optimists are correct but the Flash of the last couple of years has been rendered ineffective by not only injury but by in-your-face taggers. He owes us heaps !

What was the first VFL/AFL Melbourne game you attended?

Whilst he was a ball magnet with superior marking ability his tumbly short punts often caused the fans to groan ! -

My earliest memory ( not my first game ) dates from about 1957 or 1958 when we played at the Junction Oval and the hapless Saints kicked only 1 goal ALL DAY ! I remember their extrovert coach, Killigrew, waving his arms at the stands to stir up their fans supported by elderly trainers making overhead circular motions with their towels. It was an awful shock if we lost a game back then ! -

Legendary boundary umpire Carbery in the last couple of seconds of this tape........NO (head) buts about it ! -
Welcome to Demonland where inspite of quite a few pre season positives , two of the "HOT" topics concern endless regurgitations re the departure of $culs and Bails !
-
Bailey is recognised as having excellent mentoring skills but i will never be convinced he was up to it as a motivator. Remember the often ordinary Swooper trained teams ? Humiliation was a rarity. The players feared his tongue - " Jimmy , don't you EVER do that again ! " . I found it odd that for most of the first half of the season he positioned himself at ground level and often had his back to the play ,headphones 'round his neck, counselling players as all hell was breaking out on the field !
-
Didn't he get over excited when coming of the bench in the nail biting last minutes and jump straight in the back of a prostrate Bomber. That free could have cost us the game.! Not very subtle our Phil !

It looks like our pre season efforts have encouraged even some of our more pessimistic posters .

Can i have that two minutes back ????

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - MITCH CLARK
dee-eee replied to waynewussell's topic in Melbourne Demons
We seem to be doing EVERYTHING right.......off the field at least ! -
It is human nature , pure and simple , for lukewarm supporters of ANY club to drop off when their side loses form. The classic example is the year the Pies won the spoon. Our supporters outnumbered theirs in the Vic Park outer for the final H&A game ! Playing ordinary Essendon sides in recent years when we are the Home side and their members mostly have to pay , is another obvious example. The Southern Stand looks 2/3rds empty !
-
Gee , I must have imagined all those years when the likes of Jimma , Lyon , Neita, Stinga , Schwarta , Toddy etc played hard consistent football and we were in with a chance every week.
-
Maybe i am easily pleased , but bar the last 5 awful years, I have loved the Northey + era despite the dips along the way. Our 2 Grand Final losses were against post war sides of legendary quality. I have no doubt we could have knocked over the pretty average 1990 Collingwood premiership side. What about our demolition in the finals of eventual premier, Adelaide and then having to travel west where the Eagles had a cattery-like record. And then there was the great fun of the Allen Jacovich experience........i've mostly enjoyed the ride , being consistently competitive means more to me than winning an occasional flag.

.With the pretty ordinary year we have had , what could be "surprising " about an approach from us! Thank God this one's a furphy !

Should the minimum age of draftees be raised.
dee-eee replied to cowboy_from_hell's topic in Melbourne Demons
The "' one-size-fits-all " approach re minimum draft ages is a nonsense . Tim Watson ,with thighs like John Nicholls, was playing senior football at 15. Robert Walls and Rene Kink at 16. A Footscray player, Ron James, played for Williamstown in a Grand Final in the mid 1980's at 14 ! Nuggety Jack Viney could probably play senior footy next year but will be held back by these inflexible restraints. On the other hand, other body types, think Jolley,Jamar even Hawkins and Watts seem to be LATE maturers . -
Chad Morgan.....the Sheik of Scrubby Creek himself !
-
Loved the result and the answer to this question is simple. The Pies peaked a month ago.... the Catters clearly had the superior form over the final weeks.
-
How good we had it in the days of TWO curtin- raisers . I can still remember a precocious Wayne Carey, with permed mullet, killing 'em in the U19's. Drop most of the bells and whistles and at least show us Jack Viney & co in their Grannie .
