  1. Of course there are varying degrees of courage amongst players but even to run down the race to play our game at the highest level requires more nerve than i suspect most of their critics have ! Every player must always have at the back of his mind that inevitably that "hospital" pass will bring a shirtfont demolition. We have all seen Brad Green back into packs courageously dozens of time but it is amazing how many opposition supporters presume "pretty boys" are weak!
  2. Is "Brain" from Brahton !!!
  3. Surprised you find that observation so mysterious. There have been numerous articles and tv pieces on Houli's devotion to his religion, his charitable work and frequent addresses to Islamic school students . It should have been a no-brainer by the AFL to get him on board. El Masri of the NRL Bulldogs attracted many Lebanese to follow Rugby League.
  4. I suppose i could be converted if enough money can be found or granted for even superior facilities but it must be remembered that we do have a 152 year association with the present precinct and the MCC provides the old AFL offices in the Southern Stand to us rent free !
  5. Western Sydney like South Queensland is a phenomenal growth area so if the AFL is serious about a national comp they have to take on the challenge........and it is a big one. Very surprised Sheedy didnt headhunt Bachar Houli for his off field personal qualities to be an "ambassador" to the large Lebanese Muslim community. The unoriginal moniker, "GIANTS", is awful comparable to those of our national netball teams named after American birds !
  6. I cant believe we are even considering another training venue after just moving into our state-of-the-art facilities just a 10 minute stroll from our admin department at the Gee. The spacious gym is shared with Storm and Victory which promotes the "Melbourne" sporting brand and an obvious cost saving for us.
  7. It's NOT fiddling with stats to note that 3 flags in the last half century to the "Man. U. of the AFL " ( from Eddie of course !) hardly matches the ridiculous hype !
  8. Fair enough......I have been a dual member for over 40 years and consider myself a battler.I confess I take my MCC membership a bit for granted but it's nice to have peace of mind that there is always a spot{undercover if needed} there for me. About half our MCC supporters now also buy an MFC ticket, a huge increase on just a few years back. I would not be the only retiree who has to consider their priorities and budget accordingly.
  9. Bit scary that according to the latest MCC NEWS, our support has slipped to just under 20% of the 100 thousand MCC membership. This is a drop of 3% in only 4 years ! The Bombers, on nearly 13%, look a threat to get to us in ten years or so particularly when you consider they had several decades of success where most primary school kids seemed to jump on the bandwaggon. MCC members, LET'S GO A-NOMINATING !
  10. 'bout time Vic cricket had its own HQ. Hope they play some Shield and minor one-dayers there. Even a few hundred spectators would provide more atmosphere than at the cavernous Gee. I reckon Hinch hit a new low slamming the renaming of the ground after SKW. At least he didnt do his usual thing and wait until his victim was dead !
  11. At our present stage of development the Club has made the right call. Much of the vitriol however is unwarranted after all, although he could be sloppy with his disposals the guy was a ball magnet usually in our top 3 for possessions. A stalwart for a decade it will hurt to see him play against us.
  12. Great stuff WW........dare i hope against hope you may have the MCG game against the Pies where AJ kicked a massive torp after the half time siren. That would be three minutes of heaven !
  13. Hansen is a gun but of late chronically injury prone. NO THANKS !
  14. Great post rpfc. I always tick the MFC box when renewing my MCC subs and the combined amount is direct-debited . The $731- sure punches a hole in my limited retiree's resources but following the Dees is important to me.
  15. Been a MCC member since 1967 ( put down at birth ) and watched the Dees for decades in the now demolished Northern Stand middle deck (public area) because few of my mates were MCC members. Today, it's on the standing room terraces in front of the Blazer Bar ground level Members. I NEVER dress-up and find the wing position, elevation, roof above plus tv monitors overhead to check the stats and the replays SENSATIONAL.
  16. Just read a review in "THE AGE" of Martin Flanagan's new book "Richo" where he mentions in passing that the other flamboyant Tasmanian forward, our Robbo, said in his final interview that his greatest regret was not winning Mark of the Year ! I didnt know whether to laugh or cry !!
  17. Enigmatic is the word..........silky skills but then rarely put together more than than a couple of successive great games. This was reflected in his pretty ordinary voting in B & F's . Ironically his best game was probably his last and in reality had dire consequences for the Club......the infamous " Kreuzer Cup " .
  18. I find ANY largely white Away or Clash strip strangely demoralising. IT'S JUST NOT US ! On the other hand, white shorts with our traditional jumpers really sets it off. The red white and blue combination could also be seen as a link to our original MCC heritage(also THEIR colours ).
  19. That reminds me.... my framed copy of the Team of the Century jumper shows the full back as "Bob" Johnson which I suppose is technically correct but of course to differentiate between the two equally famous "Bobs" the defender was better known as "Tas" or "Tassie". Several visitors assumed it was a mistake ! I just find it disrespectful and irritating.
  20. Fantastic.....all my questions answered. For those who didnt check the WIKIDEMON link Jako holds the alltime VFL/AFL record of fastest 50 goals FROM DEBUT(from 9 games ) and SHARES the 100 goal record with the legendary John Coleman (from 21 games ) also of course from debut. Coleman's instant success is legendary but our "wild child " seems to be largely forgotten by non-demons. With the addition of his 60 Reserve Grade goals in '91 his total for thaT year was 131..........WOW !
  21. My favourite memory of Jako was when he had a mark or free after the half-time siren against Collingwood at the G. He was a ridiculously long way out from goal near the players' race northern side. He put on a time wasting theatrical perfomance by checking the mark and arguing with EVERYBODY and meanwhile the thoroughly irritated Pie fans were booing to a crescendo. Of course he went back and kicked the torp of his life straight through the middle. To cap it off he runs and leaps up the race high-fiving supporters on each side. What a character !
  22. Jako's amazing debut year (1991) produced 71 goals in only 14 games. Can someone tell me how many goals he scored in the Reserves earlier in that season. Also I remember reading that he shares a record with the great John Coleman. I am pretty sure it's to do with the fastest first 50 or 100 goals from debut.
