A 'throw' or 'drop' is only paid when the player a) Intentionally disposes of the ball incorrectly OR b)Has prior opportunity then fails to dispose of the ball via handball or kick. I think this rule works. In the Sewell instance, he was never going to let that ball come out as it would have resulted in Melbourne posession inside the forward 50 - He has to be allowed to drop that ball, otherwise a tackle that pins the arms becomes way too powerful. He chose not to and was rightfully pinged.
I do agree with the above post that sling tackles may be an attempt to negate the advantage of falling forward in a tackle to gain a free kick.
He finally got some good riders around him. His efforts to get two 2nd place finishes with no help were equally impressive. It's great to see him get the reward. With some luck he can win another.
I thought the umpiring was ok. The Martin 50 was odd but not necessarily wrong.
The Sewell one was correct to the letter of the law. He had no prior so he's then obliged to simply make an attempt. One arm was pinned but he's even allowed to drop the ball without infringing (due to no prior). He made no attempt and was rightfully pinged.
Totally agree. The youth policy is done and dusted - if we lose Scully, I'd like to see us add some experience and possibly leadership. We have some great potential future leaders Watts, Grimes, Trengove etc. but they won't develop into the leaders we need without learning from great leaders.
Good post. Bate is a true footballer. He works hard, gets to the right spots and can kick the ball beautifully. He is a tad slow but when this forward line is up and running, I reckon Bate will be really handy across half forward. He's especially useful when our game plan is being challenged because he pushes up to the ball. He needs a few games in a row.
The last thing we need to do is lose experienced players. Sylvia is a good player, we should hang on to him.
Trading in youth and trading out experience is the last thing we want to be doing.
6 - Ricky Petterd (since that standout game he had in the VFL against collingwood he has been amazing, would love to see him push more into the centre of the ground as his contested ball and evasive skills are a sight to behold)
5 - James Frawley
4 - Colin Sylvia
3 - Stefan Martin (how clean is he at ground level?)
2 - Brent Moloney
1 - Nathan Jones (shutting down Pearce gave port no chance)
I thought the umpiring was of a very low standard tonight. I didn't think the footy was much better either. They say that the fans love these open free flowing games but to be honest, it bores the hell out of me. The lack of defensive pressure around the ball from both teams, made the contest boring, for mine.
