  1. The New Zealand athletics coach Arthur Lydiard popularised periodisation training when his runners came from nowhere to be world beaters in the early 1960's. His own explanations for the physiological benefits of periodisation training were a bit inaccurate but science caught up by the 1980's to provide a physiological basis his methodology . If professional sports team, replete with fitness staff, are not using these principles now that would be akin to a pilot insisting the Earth is flat.
  2. On the topic of leadership, I think Max is the right leader for the times. He displays the best traditional values associated with elite performance - competitiveness, toughness, high standards, continual self-improvement - and the best progressive values - accepting uniqueness, embracing diversity, compassion for team mates and proves that the two styles need not be mutually exclusive.
  3. Jack Viney in CR be like...
  4. Manchester - if that's the right word - is not my thing. I was vaguely conscious of new towels appearing in our house several months ago and that they were of particularly high quality. After reading your post, I noticed for the first time they are from Country Road. Naturally, I have now complimented my wife on her exquisite taste in towels and informed of the 20% discount on future such purchases. Thx for your post!
  5. Ha! Yes, I thought that was uncharacteristically lame.
  6. There's a difference between being an expert on football and an expert at analysis and therein lies the problem with football commentators. They may have great knowledge of the game (e.g. tactics at stoppages, defensive set ups or forward craft) but they show a lack of understanding of basic principles of data analysis and interpretation (e.g. consideration of data quality, causal direction, confounding factors). They also express common cognitive biases such as recency bias (David King ) and overconfidence bias (Dermie). This is to be expected; just as it takes years to develop a knowledge of the game so to it takes years to acquire proficiency in data analysis & interpretation. Alas, sophisticated analysis and interpretation would make for dry media content (though the Mongrel Punt shows it's possible) . So, content makers proceed with the maxim "enrage to engage"!
  7. I thought that was the best game we've played in 2022 so interesting that it is not reflected in the stats. Perhaps this is due to the way the game was played? The 'whole of team' defensive pressure meant a lot of time was spent with Freo chipping the ball laterally (Freo accumulating stats) and afraid to take on our defensive zone (Dees not accumulating stats).
  8. I've never seen a player look more dejected after kicking a goal. Especially, a goal to give his team a near unassailable lead...in a big game...leading up to a premiership defence. Weid is on record (circa 2020) talking about underperformance in 2019 being attributable to struggling to manage the weight of expectation that came after his 2018 finals series. The view that a lack of desire explains his inadequate intensity are off the mark IMO. I imagine he's desperate to succeed - why wouldn't he be - and being unable to do so gives rise to negative emotions that further impairs performance. Reminds me of a batsmen in cricket suffering a form slump who then loses confidence and subsequently can barely hold a bat.
  9. I'm afflicted with many Geelong supporters in my life and was literally just thinking tonight that we are now into the second decade since they won a premiership. Great meme.
  10. I'm all for second chances but only if they're deserved. I've no idea what Walker is like behind the headlines but this is what the MFC need to ascertain. Only recruiting players who buy in to the club culture and - particularly in this case - are supported by the playing group would be a non-negotiable IMO.
  11. The only thing more unsettling than a player who is always ferocious is the player who can instantly toggle between friendly and ferocious. I like it.
  12. Let me save you the trouble...
  13. Still coming to terms with being unable to attend... 1 x Priority 1 barcode for sale to a Dees fan. PM if interested. Go Dees!
  14. Agree. If Jones was not going to be selected, as seemed probably, I'm happy for him that he has something else tremendously important and positive upon which to focus his attention. Another team needs his leadership now. Usefully, this early decision to return home changes the narrative from a distracting "will Jones play" to a motivating "let's do it for Jones". Well managed by Jones & MFC.

I love watching Voeckler. Such an aggresive and courageous rider. I'm not confident of an Evans miracle but I think he will at least try something and I'll be excited for a while... BTW whats with morons running alongside riders and getting in the way on the mountains? Never ceases to annoy me. So disrespectful.

I know team management won't let Froome take yellow from Wiggo in the mountains so long as the Chief is still pedaling but what about in the final TT? If, though unlikely, Froome was having the ride of his life and on track to take yellow, would he be told to slow down and gift the win to Wiggo? Domestique bar sounds interesting. Let us know what it is like if you go. I might check it out the following weekend.

I don't know if Cadel's Catholic but he needs a miracle now. Froome was awesome again. It was great when he accelerated and dropped his captain instantly. He has looked the best rider overall.

Yeah, Cadel looked very vulnerable. I was worried Nibali would make a move at the time Cadel was caught and the pack would respond and drop Cadel.

It was a good tactic. The contenders need to keep this up to try and wear Sky down. Otherwise it'll be a Sky lead procession to Paris and they'll take 1st and 2nd. Good to see TJ having a better day and offering some support. Cadel wouldn't know himself - a team mate with him in the mountains!

I know what you're saying but I do unashamedly enjoy a bit of hopeful speculation. It's been keeping me going as a Dees supporter...

Nibali showed last night that attacking on the decent can work. NIcely set up by having his team mate in the breakaway to help him out. Evans also had team mates in the break away, perhaps he was planning for a similar tactic. Although Nibali was ultimately reeled in, at least the Sky were forced to work hard to do so. I think Cadel's best hope is if Sky get worn ragged by countering relentless attacks. With two uncatergorised climbs and a summit finish on a catergory one climb, tonights stage is a cracker. Here's hoping Chief Wiggam cracks!

I was disappointed in BMC on the mountain climbs in stages 7 and 8. Cadel's support riders were dropped easily. So easily - and here is me being optimistic - I wonder whether team management decided to conserve the energy of their support climbers on the medium climbs, where Cadel could likely manage solo, in order to perform better in the high mountains where support may be esential. Perhaps they anticipated Team Sky's tactic of riding tempo from the foot of the last mountain (stage 7), which suited Cadel perfectly. Chief Wiggam is lucky to have Froome. He could have - and perhaps would have - won the Vuelta (Tour of Spain) last year if he wasn't riding as support for Wiggo (whom he beat in the end anyway to finish second). If the Wiggmiester cracks in the mountains, Froome is a real threat to win. It will be a super effort if Cadel can beat both of them!

I'm interested to see if Cadel attacks on the descents from the small climbs. I doubt Wiggins could match Cadel's technical proficiency. Though, as you suggest, perhaps it may be too early to take yellow? Let the pressure build on Wiggins and Sky for a while longer?

Great to see a few 'landers following the tour. Should be a good one for the Aussies. Green Edge should be able to give Matty Goss a chance for green. Cadel's an even better chance for yellow. His BMC team looks stronger and this year's course suits him better. Not to mention no Contador and no Andy Schlek. Don't worry about Frank Schlek, the number and length of time trials put him out of contention. Will probably come down to the final time trial. Wiggins might be the better time trialist in a one off event but I think Cadel will be better after 3 weeks of hard riding. To plenty of sleepless nights ahead...
