And he plays a position that is the most difficult to have confidence around when drafting 18 year old. I think he is worth no one but it's just a view. Perhaps not, only (say) 5 years or so left is a short time span. But he went for pick 5 which is close to the top of the tree. I've been a blue sky junkie most of my life. For a long time I've rated picks over players; the hope of picking up that generational player. But we've had so many misses and few successes. And we are by no means the only ones to miss the rebuild. I've seen DL kick and scream when we've picked up Melksham and Hibberd and I'm not sure if Vince was welcomed when selected. I watched Roos pick players like Richards, Mumford and Jolly for "way overs" only to be proven to be correct. I think human nature is to want to open the parcel to see what's inside but my experience is it's usually a disappointment when measured against expectation and hence my view that draft picks are very overrated. Good list management (trading) involves valuing picks for players. If you overvalue picks you pass up on good players and good deals. Understanding value is critical. I might be right and I might be wrong. What I do know is Mahoney will know more than me and I'd love to hear the topic debated by knowledgeable people. Mahoney's interview on DL won't lead to that debate but it's an opportunity to ask someone with the knowledge his view.

I'd like you to ask Josh about the philosophy of trading on premise that "picks are grossly overrated". If Hogan was in the draft this year he would have gone number one. If May was in the draft this year he would have been number one. Neither went for anything like that. Why? Do clubs completely overvalue "blue sky" in recruits and do they give enough weight to a possible "bust" factor and do they give enough weight to the "certainty" factor of a known trade? In general I'd like to hear him talk around this subject with reference to where in a cycle are club is and how that effects their thinking.

We will probably decide on the night. As I understand it rookies are paid less and only get a one year contract. IF this is right we'll use 40 primary list spots if JT thinks the talent warrants it but won't if he doesn't.

If he has another good year that won't help much if he insists on going to WCE because try as they might they won't have the picks to offer. It's hard to see how they can offer much more next year than they did this year.

It really annoys me that people have a go at the disappointed posters. Hogan is a generational player, he held our aspirational hopes for a long time and we became attached to him. I can't believe there is anyone not sad to see him go. Those knocking the disappointed are just jerks.

I think this is the most likely outcome but strangely, known troll GNF has said exactly what I've heard about Jesse. It is the FD preference to keep him. My source is well connected but I don't know where his information came from so I take it all with a grain of salt. What I admire about you is your ability to have certainty around a situation that is anything but certain and your ability to sprout it probably close to 50 times in this thread alone. One of the critical unknowns about this deal is the relationship between MFC and Hogan. If it is as I've heard and GNF suggests then MFC are in a very good position and can't really lose. If not Jesse's situation is anything but clear. Oh, and Graz, I agree with you. Jesse to GCS on a mega-deal, AFL ambassadorship, Jesse out of the limelight which he might enjoy and he becomes a leader of a club that now has full AFL backing and a good administration. GCS won't be much good next year but we have seen ourselves how a basket case can be turned around and GCS are better placed than we were to achieve that. Interesting days ahead.

Many struggle with the concept of "win win" and think there has to be a loser. I know it's a hard concept. My son was 8 before he got it.

I'd ask myself the question "who is more value to the team, May or Hogan?". That would be my starting point to the trade. I'm not saying I know the answer but that's the starting point for the FD.
