Split between North and South?  As DeeSpencer has pointed out, spending big bucks on an oval that will be used only for 7-8 games ( if they are lucky) in Hobart means either the stadium won't be built or the games in Launceston won't happen.

You mean like Kardinia Park where the cats play regularly to less than full crowds in a 35 ish thousand capacity stadium.

Geelong has sucked huge capital from govt into the stadium for elite users - despite the spin its for the community too, at the expense of more worthwhile projects in the city

Great read , quite a balanced and factual view of last year vs 2018

if anyone has access to the full article where does the author have us on a predicted ladder finish ?

Although I’m liking the fact that most of the footy media so far seem to be writing us off making the 8 next year

Another poorly researched opinion piece  in parts (lazy journalism maybe).

e.g  he/she lauds Max Gawn as the only player ready to go and heroically stood up all year.

As the club noted only 2 players completed more than 80% of pre-season sessions - GAWN and Lewis.

Of the best 26, vast majority completed less than 30% of sessions.

    Of course he stood out.

The Northey era was probably the more enjoyable. I will never forget the open door policy to the change rooms that allowed you to go along and listen to Swoop rouse the players. The first two 87 finals and the unforgettable prelim at Waverley can never be forgotten.

Daniher's era suffered from the up down form of the team. Just our luck to come up against the most successful one year team in Essendon in 2000. Many here blame Daniher for the subsequent collapse that we are really yet to emerge from as a club. Harsh.. maybe... but he did provide some great years unlike after he left.

Not really. Very flaky finals performances after 2000.

Flakiness was never an issue with northey teams.

That's a story for another thread Clint, but FWIW it's the "Goodwin era" and I think the current list quality is a big part of my optimism.

Here's the Northey 1988 GF team, I've added Steven O'Dwyer who was suspended in the PF for not even touching Steve Da Rui and it happened "right in front of me".  He won the B&F that year and everyone walked taller when he was playing.  Hawthorn still would have beaten us but it would have been a different match if Strawbs played.   The team is pretty evenly strong across all lines and I think it stacks up well against the 2000 side below.

B:    9 Alan Johnson    10 Danny Hughes    14 Rod Grinter
HB:    34 Stephen Newport    28 Jamie Duursma    17 Brett Lovett
?  12 Todd Viney    7 Brian Wilson    8 Graeme Yeats
HF:    3 Garry Lyon    5 Earl Spalding    15 David Williams
F:    11 Jim Stynes    27 Sean Wight    45 Ricky Jackson
    Foll:    1 Steven O'Dwyer    16 Andy Lovell    33 Greg Healy (c)
Int:    37 David Flintoff    21 Steven Febey    18 Steven Stretch
    Coach:    John Northey

Here's the Daniher 2000 GF team.  That forward line is mighty potent, but the backline and midfield are a bit pedestrian.

B:    26 Daniel Ward    27 Anthony Ingerson    44 Alistair Nicholson
HB:    42 Peter Walsh    28 Matthew Collins    21 Steven Febey
?  13 Adem Yze    22 Shane Woewodin    35 Anthony McDonald
HF:    18 Brad Green    5 David Schwarz    7 Stephen Powell
    F:    24 Russell Robertson    9 David Neitz (c)    33 Jeff Farmer
Foll:    34 Jeff White    43 Guy Rigoni    36 Andrew Leoncelli
Int:    4 Brent Grgic    16 Travis Johnstone    47 Ben Beams  46 Troy Simmonds
    Coach:    Neale Daniher

I think our current list is very competitive with these two lists.

O dwyer wasnt in team . Suspended. Nevertheless i reckon the 88 team had more class and A graders. Northey a superior coach for consistency of effort

    Northey era > Daniher era.

The only metric I'm interested in is the win-loss stat and Northey beat Daniher 53.8% to 48.4%.

Plus, Northey has been the only coach post 1964 to deliver us 3 finals wins in the one finals series. Who can guess which year that was?

Goodwin is on 46.4% after his disastrous 2019.

    1988. Gf year

If the club takes off in 2020 , Burgess may want to stay longer or negotiate a lucrative contract extension otherwise he will be off like gough.

As a professional for sure he will move on once he has achieved a record of note - no matter how long or short he will leave an imprint .

He spoke exceptional well at fan forum. Off the cuff and not planning to speak but Goodwin threw to him several times to let him handle his area of expertise. Good of Goodwin, not hogging the mike.

I never understand this line of thinking, if we win enough games we will make the 8.

The other 7 teams that win enough games will also make the 8.

Picking which team(s) will drop out of the 8 has no bearing on us making it.

Only that each year 2 to 3 teams do drop out thus at least providing the opportunities for new entrants if they are good enough

I was pretty disappointed with the club this year like everyone, the coaches, the players the admin, it was just a very poor year full of amateur mistakes, wrong messaging, underwhelming leadership and quite frankly a rather sickening response to a poor exit coming off a good year.

So i applaud the changes, the desire to make amends and the fact we have not sat on our hands and just expected we will bounce back. Goodwin is a relatively young coach, and all coaches face challenges, he did this year and im sure he will have learnt a lot, Richo will be a great addition to teh club. The Recruiters have identified areas where we could be better and gone and got players, Jury is out on Jackson for me, but i will embrace it, i love teh selection of Pickett, its a need we have.

Im now prepared to let the last 12 months go and throw my full support behind the club. The past is behind us and the future in front of us. Go Dees.

    Great Post D3.

The summary of impacts of injuries etc after 2018 on 2019 at the recent forum was also illuminating and puts the 2019 in some sort of context. Josh Mahoney's stat of only 2 starting 22 player, (Gawn and Lewis completed 80% plus of preseason), whilst 10 best starting 22 completed 30% or less spoke volumes IMO.

nevertheless no excuses now for 2020 with whats going on at present training and recruiting - wise.

    Likewise - Go Dees

I Agree.  Why has there been very little on the go home factor especially to WA.  The processes now mean contracts are worthless if someone wants to leave compared to the old days. The kid might spend a year at Casey and wonder ' what the hell'.

I can see 5 - 6 years of a Jesse Hogan type angst each off season.

    Be warned .

    Agreed.
From the outside looking in, I would have

    Captain: Gawn

    Vice Captains: Tmac and Lever

Remaining leadership group: Viney, Jetta, Jones

This will give us a good mix of leadership on every line / area of the ground. It will also ensure a good balance of younger and older players which is important with a young list.

I strongly believe Lever is being groomed for a captaincy role down the line. He is an outstanding character and spoken of incredibly highly by teammates and coaches.

Good call.   Co-captains define a club that can't make up its mind and doesn't truly understand the ' follow me '  quality of a good leader.

Time to be ruthless and make the hard call on Max alone.

Interesting to see that Liverpool's new training facility is costed at much the same as Hawthorn's.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/nov/20/liverpool-hope-50m-kirkby-training-facility-will-inspire-academy-players

"Liverpool are on course for next summer’s move to a new £50m training facility in Kirkby that manager Jürgen Klopp believes will inspire the club’s academy prospects in their pursuit of a first team place. "

Does that mean Liverpool has as many problem gamblers that the Hawks have their hooks into in their gaming venues.

Needed to fund this giant facility, sadly.

I quite like Maher and Murphy combo but I'm only a very occasional SEN listener ie trade week.

SEN has invested heavily in Lyon and Watson, Whately and now Russell. Its yet to be seen if that investment will generate ratings boost that allows a commercial return on that investment. The AFL/NRL divide makes national sports radio/tv shows more of a challenge than in more homogeneous sporting markets ie US. Be interesting to see what ratings SEN generate outside of Victoria and how they monetise that with national advertisers or insert local.

Sad, but I find Lyon and Watson must listen and amusing, Whately top of his game and well informed , Then switch off.

In the old days, Dermot Huddo and Hardy were great, as was Mark Fine. But that's all over now.

Pity the advertisers after 12.00  (if they stick around that is.) These sorts of stations need personality and top class broadcasters to keep the listeners (as per my comments on pre-Noon programs.).

...though it must be said that big man Gawn's goal kicking numbers are not horrible.  I think frustrating is the right word to use with Max, because he is more than capable of roosting goal through the middle from 50m out and doing inside out checkside banana punts around the body on the boundary with total control, yet completely shanking them from 20m out dead in front.

It's all in that rather different head of his.

54%  since 2016 when he burst onto the scene.  40 goals 34 behinds.

Huge upside if this can be fixed could take him up to better than a goal a game (and the Brownlow - already being the best ruckman)

People seem to overlook the fact that we were the highest scoring team in the AFL in 2018. Improve delivery and consolidate our backline and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be there in September! ?

    Good get CBD.

That's exactly what Goodwin said to the question from the floor about our dysfunctional forward line in 2019 and why can't we score more..

Yep, I already said my bit on this in the Members Forum thread in response to a few having a cry over this appointment. I was surprised (not really) at how many jumped immediately to pff, what would a ruckman know about goal kicking? without looking any deeper at all. On paper I can't see how he could be any more credentialed:

    1. As a player, had a conversion rate that compares on par with or favorably with the very very best, with a good sample size
    2. Is already a coach at the club and has been for a long time, so there will be no surprises at all in terms of coaching capability

Messiah is probably a stretch, but it looks a good appointment to me.

Mahoney said also it was a competitive appointment and he beat 3 other applicants by some margin.  Not just a thought bubble   sco-mo like.

At the fan forum Josh Mahoney mentioned the off field team build / talent-wise and mentioned an ex Miami Dolphins experienced person but not the specific role being played.

Burgess said when he was at Arsenal they had 12 stats analysts whose jobs it was to put the info into a usable from for the coach. he said this was the greatest change he'd seen over recent years around the world when answering a question, and felt the appointment of a " Data Scientist " at the club recently was a strong move.

Just curious did anyone outline how many games they expect to win next season? I am very worried that the club is a little delusional on where our list is and just how hard it’s going to be to get back into finals.

Never mentioned. The only measure  commented on was sustained success and playing finals next year.

  19. The following means nothing coaching-wise but worth looking at Staffords goalkicking stats from playing days from 2001 to find an angle.  I think we're on a winner with this appointment based on this. At least he should understand what successful kicking should look like - or not.

                                 GL    BH

    2001                    19    6

    2002                     26   10

    2003                     20    5

    2004                      6     3

    2005                     16     9

    2006                     15     5

    Total                     102    38     or 73%  success rate

Brian Taylor                   64%  (one of the very best I've seen for method)

Peter Hudson               71%  (the best I have seen)

Christian Petracca       56% (over 3 seasons, but becomes 52% over last 2 seasons, but small sample size)

    David Neitz                    63%

Tom McDonald              69%  ( last 3 years since moving to FF) - 77% in Year 1 of FF in 2017

    Gary Ablett                     60%

    Tony Lockett                  70%

Re. Point 3 above . It was lewis and hawn who completed 80% or more of pre season. Jones completed 30%.

10 key players completed less than 30% of preseason.

    Some other key point were.

The 666 rule means wingers are now critical specialist role . We tried 17 players in that position to no avail. Hence Tomlinson and langdon targetted. Both had 3 to 4 other clubs intereste.

Jones will be playing higb forward and providing leadersip in that area.

Frost moved on due to perceived lack of opportunities for him now.

Goodwin mounted a strenuous defence of oscar after a particularly moronic and nasty question from the floor

Dees had the highest number of total team changes at selection for the year. Ahead of next biggest by 50%. Illustrated depth of injury woes

Burgess believes the game is won by marking and kicking well and will have preseason programs built on 80% with footballs. Running laps at traing doesn't win games. He seemed right on top of his subject. Bpown away by condition players have presented themselves in at start of pre season..  . Huge wrap for Bruckner

Petracca to now have significant more time in midfield in 2020

    Josh Jenkins was never considered.

    1. Loss coming, but covered from cash reserves( I’d check this when financials released)

    2. Training facility still being discussed with up to 8 government institutions.( Have heard this multiple times before)

    3. Injuries were the reason, not an excuse. Of the mids only Lewis and Jones completed more than 50% of preseason.

    4. Board were aware of this prior to season, but hoped to have players returning. We just got more injuries.

    5. Coaches aware of lack of outside run. Addressed with Langdon and Tomlinson..

    6. Greg Stafford to take up goal kicking coaching along with rucking. Beat 3 others viewing for the role.

    7. Only 3 players had post season surgery compared to 16? last year. All of those last year were classed as essential surgery’s.

    8. At round 22 Goodwin had a review with the players to vent their frustrations with the year. Big positive.

    9. Plenty of Muppets asking questions after. They should read Demonland if they want to know the latest about all manner of things. Some must live in isolation with their lack of knowledge about players and the club.
