Listened to it in its full context, he was on the money and he was cautious in his approach very much talking about the now, he was glowing in his future expectations of Clarrie and Gus

Agree. He recently analysed petracca and why expectations are too high. Interesting insights most times.

He thinks trac is caught between being a midfielder with poor engine and key position with wrong body shape.

How is he responsible for Watts’ broken leg? Can we also blame him for Scully’s miraculous recovery?

    Give it time ET.

I think Preuss and Max will play really well together and suprise a lot of people.

Jimmy and Strawbs worked very well...

Both need to practice Goal Kicking.

    2-3 a game can be the difference between a W and a L

Fully agree especially given their 4 year age difference. We will retain Max for longer with Preuss taking more work .

The 'stynes/O'dwyer' thing back in late 80's was a paradigm shift at that time.

Read all of the comments.  As a MFC supporter for 54 years, I cannot truly enjoy a win from a team who has had the most dramatic fall from grace that I have ever seen.  I am angry and embarrassed that we are 16th on the ladder. I am sick of the OTT goal celebrations of the Petracca’s et al. FFS just go back to your position without all of the BS carry on and kick another goal. It’s your job. Just do it.   I was lucky enough to know Alan Jeans quite well. He would have burst a blood vessel seeing the way some of these “modern” footballers carry on.

I can only imagine what the likes of RDB and Norm Smith would say to some of our current players on the back of last season.

    Not so fast.

1998  we make the prelim after the 97 wooden spoon.  Then we finish bottom 3 in 99 with only 6 wins. With arguably a better list than we have available now.

This has all happened before.  IMO the 2018 list has always been overrated and they played out of their skins for the last 5 weeks of the season only.

    Still building

I agree with all your other sentiments though PD

Staggering response on here as always. We had one on the bench in the last quarter, with the casualty list including TMac who had absolutely slayed them before the injury. It still amazes me that people don’t adjust their expectations despite the glaring evidence in front of them. As soon as I learned TMac was out, I knew it would be game on. But nah, everyone go on expecting greatness from an already struggling team now dead on their feet.

I thought it was a really enjoyable gritty win. Glad there’s a few on here who agree.

    Nice one.

I'm happy with the win, even if most on here will be negative. 3 down on the bench for the whole last quarter and we fought out a win. Wasn't pretty, but too show that heart says something about the group

Was at the game.  Team was out on its feet.

Kudos to getting over the line.

Oliver was nothing short of heroic

    Jones - consistently found targets

    Viney - bullocking and courageous

    McDonald - outstanding until injured

    Fritsch - great first half

    Oliver - courageous and tireless

    Preuss - finally justified selection

    Harmes - important but fumbly

    Salem - continued impressive season

    Neal-Bullen - just a game

    Petracca - brilliant in bursts

    Frost - heart in mouth

    Hunt - took his chances

    Brayshaw - disappointing season continued

    Weideman - failed to impose

    Lewis - was rarely sighted

    Hibberd - rarely inspired confidence

    May - safe and composed

    Hannan - some rare glimpses

    Dunkley - deer in headlights

    Petty - quiet before injury

    Lockhart - was he playing?

    Hore - will be missed

    Jones. You're joking.

Dunkley. Some good things under pressure

    May. Saved the game.

    Petty. Shows potential

    Frost. Starting 22 in 2020

    Neal bullen. B grade

    Viney. Not a thinking footballer

    Oliver. Leadership in spades

Yep, I think this is on the money and probably should be, earns a game in whatever position plays his 300th but no more than 1 more year.

True and valient servant for such a long period of time! Ive changed my view a little!

This is a difference between us and .say, the Hawks.

No sentimentality over there. Would clearly be respectfully retired by Hawks at end of this season. As Goody should.

    Slower reflexes, fumbly.......

The end comes to all of us, but what's in the best interests of team development trumps other angles. IMO

More games needed into Hore,  Lockhart, Sparrow,  Dunkley, Baker, Wagners, Petty......as the priority.

Had a mixed game for mine. At stages looked great, loved the way he took a few bodies and that double handed spike to a teammate, but also thought he was dump kicking to often for a skilful player and spoiling his teammates, dropping easy marks to often in marking contests.

Not in the final 15 minutes though when i thought he provided a calmness down back with good disposal

Salem on Cameron? More damaging by foot than Frost

It's got to be someone applying constant physical pressure and touch.

Salem would be a sacrifice too far.

Setting wagner the task and sacrificing own game might work.

    Natural leader.

    Great post.

The team has a good kick now down there and the keys to a finals standard defence with lever and future 10 year player hore.

I see May as a walk up to leadership  group in 2020.

Fitting that he had the ball today at final siren time

    Viney should go before Brayshaw...

Sadly you may be right.  I don't think jack can solve his right side issues whereas as Brayshaw can improve his weaknesses, and his performance alone in the finals has to count for something (think 3rd 1/4 Vs hawks.)

Dazzle is right on the money. Jones retires at seasons end ( after a great career) and club moves to appoint new blood.

Viney is NOT a captains toenail. Period!

    For next year

    GAWN CAPT

MAY ( Thats right MAY!) VC

    OLIVER DVC

    LEADERSHIP GROUP  LEVER, MELKS NEV

Another sensible and smart left field post.

    Could just be the solution.

    Max sole skipper

    Lever & Viney deputy’s

good option and sets Lever up to take role when Max retires in the distant future. Lever was seen as potential skipper at Crows which was one reason they were upset he left.

It has to be Max. At a minimum he’ll be a co-captain but I’d prefer if he was sole captain.

Big test coming up for the club and for jack Viney's selflessness (or not) to not seek the role in 2020 to focus on form

Max seems an obvious choice for his professionalism to preparation alone but might be a burden he doesn't need.

    Jake lever anyone?

Disappointing just because I deluded myself in to think this would be better, but really it was just more of the same: getting heaps of the ball but just not translating it in to goals.

Heaps of positives from this game though. Lever at 80% added heaps. I thought May in his first full game was good. Our whole backline looked far more cohesive and kept us alive in the first half. Hannan got better as the game went on. Weideman slowly but surely hitting form and becoming a forward threat again. It might be that thing of deluding myself again but I truly think we’re not as far off as ladder position might suggest.

Thought Maxy deserved a paragraph of his own. He is simply immense. He’s playing as a genuine midfielder now without giving up any of his other strengths. If we were winning he’d be being lauded as the best player in the game on current form.

Was at the game. Great summary nasher.

But Viney's lack of a right foot is now a huge issue. All clubs know this.

Petracca’s statistically had his worst six weeks since his first six games for the club four years ago. He’s averaging just 70 SuperCoach points and has kicked a paltry 10 goals from 11 games as a permanent forward line player. Those are horrible returns.

It’s amazing how divorced from reality our supporters (and the media) can be when it comes to this player. He’s either a chronic underperformer or simply not that good. I think it’s probably somewhere in between.

The similarities with Colin Sylvia’s career path are eerily similar.

Yes. Today will be another underwhelming output. Might win the odd one on one and maybe a cameo but thats about it.

Four years ago we would've been quietly celebrating another good prospect getting their first game under their belt, and looking forward to the future.

I know the urgency of getting full-AFL-level performances out of our best-22 overrides that a little, but at a personal level for him, and as a note for the future of the club, I'd say we've got a live one here.

Thinking in ludicrously optimistic terms, but this current form slump and injury horror show has allowed a whole lot of young and fringe players to be tested or to get a little experience. It helps answer a lot of questions that might otherwise have only been faced once some of our current core players begin retiring.

Excellent last paragraph LG. I optimistically agree with david king who said this week melbourne 's run at the 2020 flag starts now with planning and getting healthy list in place. Your point on whay we have found in new talent can only improve 2020 prpspects.
