He got heavily involved with medicos ( not in a good way) when jack had his foot problems. he;s not a doctor and should have stayed out of it.
This was the early debacle I am referring to.

He could easily phone the club from the snow during his family holiday and tell them he doesn’t want to be captain anymore. Selfish.
Fully agree. putting the club second.

Goodwin knows he is on thin ice.
By that i mean, he has been told. He has to learn to work with others, very quickly.
Thanks for the comments on this.
If Buckley can change, anyone can.
I have faith in Pert and the Board not to sit on their hands after this year ( and last year's heroics)

Funny thing is, Garry seemed very surprised. He said he'd have to call his mate after the show was finished.
Good observation AH30. I also felt Garry was taken by surprise, and if so, then the club should be commended for keeping this quiet (up till this morning anyway)

Typical, not surprised at all, Hawthorn move on Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Roughead, and we cling to the turnover merchant, it will finish badly of course, it always does at the MFC.
I was too wary of posting on this decision for obvious reasons but you have covered my view well.
Very disappointed in the club not having a sensible and compassionate discussion with Nathan to guide him to a worthy and respectful retirement. (they may have tried though - who knows)
Now we could have a car crash for him next year. I don't buy the earning the extension on leadership given our woeful performances under him at key moments in the recent past - Final round 2017 is the highlight in this regard and round 1 this year.
Will be partly mitigated by skipper change.

Brisbane is the real deal.
Not what I saw yesterday. I thought I was watching dees vs Tiges in first half.
Huge collection of clearances and disposals (like us) to no effect on the scoreboard, although they did slow the tiges down after 1/4 time.

This might be obvious, but every other team will be looking to improve in 2020. To make the finals, at least one of this year's top 8 would have to drop out and we'd have to improve more than 8 other clubs. Big job.
I'm with Wiseblood on this.
Each season generally 3 teams drop out of the 8, and 3 new ones go in. 2019 - demons, hawks and swans out
Lions bombers and dogs in for example. Doesn't happen each year but reliable predictor
There will be opportunities next year.
Ball's in clubs court though. Skipper, fitness, game day coaching, strategy, list clean up, skills etc.....

When did we last play open fast football with any success?
Just left the H after seeing first half of tiges snd lions.
Tigers are everything we are not.
Well drilled plan with all players buying in
Foot skills sublime
Forwards excl catagna all can kick straight for goal.
Have natural forwards. Reiwoldt lynch rioli martin. - we have t mac
Run wide and center ball more often .
It was a pleasure to watch

We play a similar game style. Problem is Richmond have the quality of players to suit that game style.
We don't.
Agree about player quality. But just left the game. No way did i see any resemblance in style to tiges. More like Lions at present who seem to constsntly bomb to forward contests which are being picked off by tige defenders.

Good riddance miserable 2019.
Whilst difficult to put aside the pessimism, perhaps there are a few reasons to be hopeful for next year?
- Fritsch's late season form up forward suggests we can get back to a formidable forward half mix next year
- If the rumours are true, Ed Langdon will definitely add some class and dash
- Pick 2 should find us an A grade talent, one that can make an impact quickly
- It's unlikely we could be cruelled by injury in the same fashion, already in a better place compared to last year with few pre season surgeries required
- On paper, the backline looks strong (Hibberd, Jetta, May, Frost, Hore, Lever), albeit with little pace and a question mark on depth
- Tom McDonald will be better (PLEASE!) as will Sam Weideman
- Several small forwards seem gettable in the post season, perhaps none are perfect but we should land someone that can fill a need somewhat adequately
Agree with all of this but big issue also is that FD/goodwin improve 200% on game plan and match day coaching. Players step up tp be peak fitmess and top class disposal.
Alas I'm not optimistic on these 2 issues.

Another coaching disaster from someone in the FD team.
Not to mention the 3.1 to 1.7 final quarter scoreline

underwhelmed but perhaps he'll be decent in the caretaker role post bye next year.
Yep MFCSS is my mantra
Seriously though what benefit does a sacked coach bring to a dysfunctional playing group. He comes with no authority or credibility. It has echoes of Mc Cartney which didn't end well.
Mind you he was pretty good at outcoaching Goodwin on so many occasions.
Just shows really how shallow the professional pool is.
Spot on. I just can't see what benefit this appointment will be.
Burgess I get what he brings in contrast.

Disappointing if true because goody as a serious finals player should know how hard it is to get there and should have been ahead of the curve in pre season.
Is he dumb or just so inexperienced its scary.? ??

Max Gawn has had another great personal season and his performance is a highlight in an otherwise very disappointing year. He deserves great credit for his preparation, the work on his game and his consistent effort from week to week. He is the premier tap ruckman.
No doubt Max has a great personality and is a great leader around the club - he will probably be co-captain next year.
Who killed Bambi?
The problem is I think having Max Gawn play this way is a big part of our problems this year because he makes us too predictable. Last year this had the bonus of surprise when Oliver, Brayshaw and Harmes all made significant improvement, this year it's a liability.
I've never rated tap outs and have mixed views about taps to advantage - both the lynch pins of Max's game. A contest in the ruck is vital because one-off matches with tap outs to advantage are very damaging, but consistent tap outs to advantage are very predictable and the opposition simply sweats on our first possession and tackles our inside midfield. No surprise that we are 17th for tackle differential - that's the key tactic applied against our contest based game.
I rate around the ground marking and providing a marking target much more highly and I think this is where Max provides us with the most value currently. But his kicking remains a liability and this is an issue when he drifts forward. Quite frankly Grundy is a far more valuable player because he is an extra mid-fielder, can kick and can ruck and mark nearly as well as Max.
There's no way we would even consider trading Max but we need to give some thought to about how to use him effectively next year.
This season absolutely proves the misconception that is the importance of hitouts advantages etc.

Could not agree more. The May option even in LG would be a big change and worthy of consideration. I will be surprised if he's not at least In LG if he does a gawn and returns in mint condition

Is it just a coincidence then that most of the posters here are suggesting our most talented player be captain?
Yes it is a coincidence.
Max showed the " follow me " approach after the 2017 debacle season by training in his own time, and when overseas, to prepare for the redemption which deservingly came his way in 2018.
He just happens to be a great player as well.
But one of the few with leadership qualities at the club at present.

If it goes through, we aren't discussing this.
Second, he appears to say sorry to Jones.
Third, he was stuffed at the time, as you can see and it was a one second decision.
Lastly, who would you like him to have given it to, when he was 30 out, straight in front, with time to have a kick?
Spot on.
he says "...Sorry Mate..." to the skipper. Clearly knows he let himself down. . And he was stuffed.
I have loved a lot of what Fritsh has done this year. He won't be out of the next finals team. Lets hope they shake hands over this

I posted this in another thread about the co-captaincy last night, probably more appropriate here.......
I remember Jones being blind-sided, but then ``warmed`` to the idea.
From the outside looking in, I don`t think he ever warmed to it and there are lingering side-effects on show to this day. I was told 2 years ago by a former player that Viney was more concerned about his own form than being a leader. Maybe he has grown since then but he hasnt exactly been on the park for much of the past 2 years.
In my opinion both of them need to go and Gawn needs to be made sole Captain, appointed by the coach. His speech at the BnF last year was enough to tell me he is a true leader, he talks the talk BUT he walks the walk.
I don`t think Jones nor Viney are natural leaders. Steven May has shown more onfield leadership (in the few games he has played) than either of these blokes this year.
Clean slate next year or its rinse and repeat, bet your bottom dollar.
The best post I've read on this issue. Including the May opinion.

Good call. Pert has overseen 52k membership and new balance resign. He gets a pass this year easily. His ceo clout will now be on display getting FD into shape. That will be his test next 12 months. If viney and jones are still skippers then thats a failure at the first tough decision.
Time will tell

I know there's another thread on Simon Goodwin, but for me watching at the game last night, this statistic says it all about the coaching Group's overall competency and should call into question the option of any non-performance clause in employment contacts by the Board being exercised.
1. At half time, both team had equal possessions - 185 each.
2. But ...In the 3rd 1/4 when the wheels fell off MFC had 25% more possessions than the swans. What happened?
3.And.... Overall of the Inside 50 count of 55, half of these were delivered by arguably the clubs best 4 players/onballers - Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Harmnes and Petracca.
4. And yet..... only 2 goals were scored from 1/4 time. If you ignore the dubious free kick goal, then our gun onballers set up 1 goal from 1/4 time despite owning the leather, sort of. How?
Irrespective of player fitness and/or injury, the Board's first question on Monday is how can what is seemingly impossible be so easily achieved by the supposed 'best list' in the AFL?
This is not a player issue. IMO the players got the team the the prelim last year on 6 weeks of G and D. The rest is fugazi
Like last year I shall attend the AGM , and this will be my question from the floor if someone doesn't beat me to it.
Or Simon addresses it to my satisfaction in his much anticipated address to the members that night.

Goodwin needs to go based on the garbage this year, the stats are disgusting eg tackle difference. Will cost us gate takings, memberships, sponsors , attracting players, destroying current list!
The hitouts by max and clearance results for swans are an indictment on coaching team. You see the stats but they seem impossible.

Top notch coaching by Buckley last night. Down to 2 in last 1/4 with 4 goal lead managed perfectly.
If only we had those types of thinkers inside Dees box.?
