  1. Highly respected former senior umpire Darren Goldspink believes disrespect rules and associated penalties have backfired badly for AFL. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/stricter-respect-rules-putting-more-pressure-on-umpires-goldspink-20220419-p5aeir.html
  2. 50 metre penalties will win the Coleman Medal this season.
  3. We played 164 consecutive games between 1955 and 1963 without conceding more than a 100 points a game. There were higher streaks before then but all were before 1920 when scoring was significantly lower. I’m not sure but I suspect our current streak could be the longest in the AFL era.
  4. We weren’t much chop when he had to decide between us and Geelong. After all their stocks looked better coming off a GF. We were still fumbling outside the 8. He thought they were the better prospect for another premiership.
  5. I have said it before, if all umpires cannot be full time professionals then there should be at least one full time professional umpire for every game with the power to overturn any bad decisions by the others if blatantly obvious. Should reduce bad decisions significantly. Currently all umpires act like best buddies and unwilling to call out a bad decision by their mates. Having a master umpire should give that separation of roles, relationships and responsibilities.
  6. It was clearly a push by Frost. He gave him an almighty shove with his left pinky finger under Hawkins right armpit.
  7. He also tends to drop his knees when tackled from behind so the tackler falls on top of him. Does it all the time but some umpires seem now to be aware of this. Watch the GF and see him doing it when Pickett tackles and dispossess him and the ball goes to Bowey to set up the Brayshaw goal. Weightman flops like he’s been knee capped and Pickett falls dead set square on his back. Luckily the umpires ignored this.
  8. Freo looking really good. Seem to have eliminated their error prone game that ruined their season last year. Their defence is awesome so far as well.
  9. As I recall, Richmond fresh after a demolition of the Saints was billed as the tigers going to re affirm their premiership authority and humiliate some upstart 5-0 pretenders.
  10. If Trac is not playing it will be the first game since 2018 he’s missed.
  11. Thats what I was thinking after seeing Niknats understudy spud Williams in action.
  12. WC get first goal courtesy from a non push in the back free and second from an unpaid push in the back. Umpires face palm yourselves.
  13. Thanks, typo error.
  14. “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" or meddlesome priest. A quote attributed to King Henry the 8th when he was wanting to get rid of Archbishop Thomas a Becket before he had him assasinated. I guess umpires are like priests and their reputations have also fallen.
  15. Games played since conceding a 100 points. Adelaide-0 Hawthorn-0 Richmond-1 Collingwood-1 North-1 GWS-2 Port-2 Geelong-2 Western Bulldogs-2 Essendon-3 West Coast-3 St Kilda-3 Gold Coast-4 Fremantle-4 Carlton-5 Sydney-7 Brisbane-10 Melbourne-54
  16. Percentage can be built by keeping the opposition scores low. If believable what he said we must be the only side that are pacing themselves on game days. We did have 2 short breaks and perhaps a wise decision to not run ourselves into the ground like some other clubs have already done. Defence uses less energy than offence.
  17. When I was a copy boy in the 1970’s at the Herald & Weekly Times it was a perk for us to grab as many premiership posters as we could at the end of the GF and rush down to the MCG to [censored] them off. We used to make some good money. Two sets were printed, the losers set was later pulped. Wish I grabbed some of those as well.
  18. Makes our modest win over GC in oppressive conditions look better now. GC are a very good side at least early in the season and at home.
  19. I was at that game and one of the few I remember clearly from the time. One of the most frustrating games I’ve ever attended.
  20. Had to switch off the pre game due to that irritating ear worm Adelaide club song.
  21. Last time we conceded 100 points in a game. Round16, 2019 against Carlton which we won anyway. 53 games since without conceding a 100 points.
  22. If a player is managed there is the implied understanding that they will return the following week. IF Brown and Weid play well what happens to Tmac? Bad for trust if he’s kept out then. Must be dropped on form, injury or team structure requirements. Management is only a temporary rest.
  23. As Goodwin said last night defence is the main priority as well as contest. I notice when going forward from defensive transition nearly always our long kicks go deep to contests in the pockets or wide flanks which lower scoring percentages but offset by weight of entries and pressuring opposition defences to scramble exits. More important to keep the ball bottled up deep forward than playing a high risk high reward attack game. Goodwin has enough confidence that our default game will score more than the opposition solely on defensive and contested output.
  24. from port supporter on BF. And speaking of Max Gawn , you are a freaking colossus. A guy your size shouldn't have skills like that nor did you need us to continually kick the ball to you. But there you go, I dips me lid.
  25. They turned out to be ‘the line in the sand’ games we were waiting to happen for over a decade.
