You are right on the money My whole point being what has been learnt from past years? From our track record. nothing. We go from even par with debt, only to fall back into heavy debt. We build a good team, that gets good results, to having everything implode before our eyes. When we mange to build, and just need an elite player or two, only to see a solid base fall apart, not many or enough players seem to hang around, so to allow us to be a force year after year. The same seems to apply at board level, badly managed, or hamstrung or both. Hopefully from 2012 onwards we can show consistancy on all fronts and we can safely say, we arent going broke, and our player group can stay at a competive level year after year. That means when we lose players, we can replace them, as not to fail away that much we cant win a game. Stynes and Co have us in good shape atm, lets hope that continues without the money coming in, the club performance suffers on all fronts All the hype right now is positive, and hopes are high. How many times over the years has this happened, only to last a few years, then we are again scrapping the bottom From 2012, lets hope we never fall away, and are always there abouts. To be consistant on all levels.

In the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to view some old MFC games that date back to 1987. I was left wondering why we go from hot to cold in just a matter of a few years. This is not just a current trend, it dates back to day dot. When we look back through our history, what that reflects is either you'll find us in the top 4 teams, or if you cant find us there, check the bottom 4, We are either hot or cold, no in between for us. About the only time we are there-abouts is when we are coming back from a few seasons in the doldrums. More than likely not just a couple but a duration of years, languishing, going nowhere. Is the culture of this club that bad , that we rest on our laurels we lose that edge that got us back where we think we rightly belong? Shouldnt we expect and demand better? Why is it that every few decades, we have had to resort to the high flyers and the passionate supporter for hand outs? We can only keep going to the well, so many times. It seems we have had to do that more times than we should. We are fortunate to be able to have those resources to call upon but things need to change, if we are to continue on our own two feet. Every club / team goes through their ups and downs, but our bad is as bad as it can get. Take away the glory years of the mid 50's to the early 60's and really their isnt a lot we can hang our hat on. The question needs to be asked and answered, what happens in our next phase, after Jim Stynes and Co finally call it a day and hand over to a new Board? Will all their hard work slowly be eroded and we end up once again paupers, and left struggling. Hopefully the answer is no, we have seen the last of being down and almost out. A new Board, whenever that might be continues to build, and we no longer are seen as a poor club. Time will tell. Money brings success, success brings in money. Mark Neeld now has at his disposal a mixture of highly rated talent to call upon, the playing group regarded as one of the best if not the best young group to mould and perform and expects them to play accordingly. And we shouldnt settle for anything less. Neeld touched on a few things within the club he has noticed in his short time here. Hopefully the culture will change, no more hitting rock bottom its onwards and upwards. Now for those old games I viewed What stood out for me was the drive we got from the 1/2 backline Like todays team, we didnt have any elite midfielders, just talented players with courage, and willing to have a go. The likes of, Steven Stretch, with his dash, ball handling and courage. Graeme Yeates, again willing to go in and great disposal. Then Bret Lovett, I remember watching most of these games if played at the "G" I will say I never gave Lovett credit that was due to him. I always thought he was good, but after viewing these games, he was real a rock down back. Rarely made a mistake and backed himself, and hit targets in the forward line. Then we had Rod Grinter, his toughness, solid mark and dash was also great at hitting a target upfield. A lot hasn't changed, the basics, get the footy, and be able to hit a target to advantage. There was some talent in there, but some of that talent only lasted a few years, for various reasons ie Warren Darren Cuthbertson, Darren Bennett, Allen Jakovich to name a few. Why did these players, that had the talent to rip a game apart only last a few years with the club? One would expect, a 200+ career barring injury, but we had a lot of flash-in-the-pans so to speak. Then we wonder, why we go from chocolates, to boiled lollies. Where is the continutity?? Most important, our primemovers now,and most still developing can last more than a few years so passing the baton, doesnt mean a total rebuild This also includes new Board members when the time comes If we can make good all the good work done over the last 4 years, we will no more be referred to as one of the poorer clubs. The mighty Dees, we be mighty. (most of the time).

Alarm bells started to ring.... From his point of view. we have one the youngest and less experienced lists in the AFL. We also have a number of 'kids' that have now had a few seasons under their belt. Considering his "kindergarten" list of players they have, why not put them up against a young team that isnt way too advanced , in terms of games played. Use that as a guide to where GWS is at. Thats one side of it. We also have (by my count) approx 20 players out of contract at the end of 2012 I hope that is retified sooner, rather than later. This sleezebag, might view this as a way to backdoor us once more, a chance to have a chat with a few, by mingling after a "friendly" game... paranoid? [perhaps] Tell him to blow it out of his ear, they will get to play us round 13.

What was the first VFL/AFL Melbourne game you attended?
DeeVoted replied to Wilson7's topic in Melbourne Demons
You are correct, I looked it up earlier today. As it turns out, that wasnt my 1st Game I watched Melb, play. The Melb V Hawthorn ANZAC Day 1963. was my 1st. Cant recall a thing about it, apart from the old man taking "happy snaps", during the game. The colours of the jumper and the MCG had me starstruck. lol, glad you thought so , was it just before 1/2 time or early in the 3rd qtr?, I think we were kicking to the punt Rd end. Ian Cooper, stood on No12;s shoulders, all I could think about was. how dare he do that! Any chance we had of winning that day, got snuffed out after that grab, cant recall much else about that match I can still see him, climbing all over Bromells' shoulders. Now its very hazy, but might have been taken from the fullback kicking in, after we scroed a point. Go close to being the best one "live" I have seen, (now theres a topic for a new thread) : ) Wonder if there is a pic of that mark somewhere, love to compare to how my memory remembers it. -
What was the first VFL/AFL Melbourne game you attended?
DeeVoted replied to Wilson7's topic in Melbourne Demons
My earliest memory that I can confirm the exact date, was June 1965 Melb V St.kilda at the G My old man took me, he barracked for Sth.Melb So I considered myself lucky to see a live game I had hopes of a win, we doing ok, just before 1/2 time , Cooper took a hanger in the center over Bromell I think it was, from that moment on it was all over, we got belted. It got even worse, it if wasnt bad enough Barassi jumping ship, Smith getting sacked I used to go to the G when 10yrs old, and sit thru the whole game, watching us getting flogged. I recall another game that may have been before this, Melb V Hawthorn ,,, Anzac day but cant recall the year. I remember those old banners, hanging / tied to the stands ie devestating demons etc etc I had too alter my jumper from 31, so the 3 went I used the 1 to make 16. If you thought $cullduggery is bad, RDB was worse. (for me) Add the Smith saga, I am surprised I'm still here to reflect back. to add salt to my wounds, we were about to play in school GF , going back to back and who gets invited to give a pep talk to us , 2 nights before the weekend Gabby Jeans The same one, that ended any hope back in June, that really sent us in a downwood spiral. I cant recall a word he said lol I think I switched off,, the enemy!! Oh cruel world give me some hope, I have suffered enough -
Gets a thumbs up from me Taking into account his vid highlights are his better efforts.... Well balanced, gives off to a player in a better position, doesnt try to overdo it I picked up he is a quick thinker on the run and in packs. Worth us using a late pick if available. Could be a nice replacement for Maric, as he is looks like moving on. I say go for it.

I recall the story went.... Norm Smith pubically called an umpire *whos name escapes me* a cheat. The MFC board at the time, refused to back up or support him on the matter, leaving him to his own devices (sued?) that didnt happen. That lead to him being sacked, Smith said he didnt have the support of the MFC. Later his wife said Norm Smith died of a broken heart, after the treatment he received from the MFC. He coached Sth Melb, got them into the finals, but he really got himself into trouble, Fiery red head Barassi wanted to get into coaching when he finished his playing days, Norm Smith advised him he would be better, going elsewhere to gain experience. Norm Smith as I recall didnt tell him to leave just left that descision the Barassi. I am going from memory for the above. But thats pretty much how it evolved. We have been pretty much, crap ever since.

Another way IF we really want Dawes ... Trade M.Warnock to Carlton for one of their picks (not sure what, low 2nd round maybe) Bate to the filth with the Carlton Pick. Job done. We still have a good chance for a quality Mid with our compo picks PS Newton can carry Baters kitbag. he'll be looking for a new home

Congrats to all that were part of the league, I enjoyed it, My shoulders are thankful its over, holding up the league labouring on the wrong end, wasnt easy, some of you blokes need to lose some weight. All my players have been delisted, contracts ripped up! I had some big names in there, most were out of form or injured for most of the year. Anyway well done DL7 I am hoping to be there next year to see you unravel the flag in the opening game. On side note, I just missed out in a GF berth in both SC and DT. Hoping for a better year all around in 2012

I agree with your views on that list of players But the reality is we cant cull all of them. Of your trade/get rid of I'd keep Bate Bartram and Scully (if available) Morton up for grabs for a trade. Bate and Bartram stay for no other reason as they are handy players and not much more than that. Thats 4 players off the list ... 5 if Scully takes the $$ and runs. Nicholson comes off the rookie list the smart play might be to have him swap places with Maric. Rookie list: Newton surely has to go this time Cant see Tom McNamara surving, but I would like to leave him there for another year, may have found something playing in the midfield, still only 20 @190cms Campbell , Handy backup and 1 more year to get back some form and over injuries. At 29 mid next year, might go anyway. With Martin stepping up and Gawn coming along Campbell may not stay. Johnston and Evans could go either way. What we lack is a game breaker.... our own Judd / Ablett Sylvia is our man, but sometimes I need to check the footy record is make sure he was selected to play. Green has to stay in the forward line, playing him in the midfield has failed, he is a receiver, and converts goals. Looking back over the year, I thought we were about par with wins and losses, we were knocking on the door for the 8. What was a kick in the guts, were the huge losses when we lost. I was expecting us to lose about the amount we did, but not to roll over, I expected to have close losses,be competitive all games. So Bate could be lucky, and stay another year. Newtown has had more chances, and still done nothing. The above names mentioned, all need to pull out their fingers next year, because somebody has to go for 2113.

Thanks OMR and others for the well wishes, and encouragement. My mob hung in there, and they can expect a tough off season I do believe I am inline for priorty picks for 2012 (and didnt tank, no matter what the media says) To JA, well done organizing the league and handling the technical side of it all. To all the coaches in the finals, good luck.... as for the rest of us, enjoy the spoils. I now can concentrate on my finals in DT and SC.

The harsh reality of AFL Football, the fall guy is the coach. When a team doesnt perform, its the coach. When injures, loss of form, lack of talent within, its the coach. I'd just like to say I wish you well in whatever path you decide to take. You have left our list in a position to go to greater heights, than when you took on the job. It was always going to be a tough gig. Lack of finances, 3rd rate facilities, no super stars to call on. Yet, not once did we never hear excuses from you. Although I thought at the time, wrong person for the job, I held hope you could do something with this train wreck of a club. The debt was wiped, the young players recruited show heaps of promise. We, as supporters, were given hope, glimpses of brilliance, then depths of despair. I wont ever hold you totally to blame, A few more heads can think themselves lucky The players, should be ashamed, they let you down, you did your best, some that take the field, can they say, they gave it their all, every game? I dont think so. Like every general, they need good people around them to, help steer, and advise. I think we lacked in that area as well. To the every last, you remained composed, in control and honest. For all that you did, to help the Melbourne footy club, I thank you. Good luck for the future, to you, and your family,

You can count on my team , If they go down, they will go down fighting. (MFC ... you listening??) I had a wretched run with injuries, out of form players, mistimed byes nothing seemed to go my way. but held my nerve, never gave up. I guess everyone had a tale of woe. But have enjoyed the challenge. I wont apologize playing hard ball on rejecting trades. Some were just ridiculous. Good luck to the teams in the finals.

I have had a gutful! The Trengove tackle just broke the camels back for me...what about any others ?? Time to stand up and be counted All Clubs Not just MFC and its supporters WE MARCH ON AFL HOUSE First we lose the MCG because the AFL wanted to make more $$$ Then they disband the Reserve Grade. so the ground doesnt get all messy and takes away the nice pretty look on tele. Dish up this crap entertainment at 1/2 time Now they are considering an about face with the Reserve Grade, could return ??(at a cost) All teams are FORCED to wear an away strip ( few exceptions ) regardless if there is a clash with opposition colours or not. New teams allowed to have colours already existing to add the the clash [censored]. Thats just for starters. Now look at the big picture Rules Committee what a joke Rule changes every year, some just dont make any sense In fact are adding too more confusion MRP = Moron setup. I was all for Tribunal by Video to stamp out king hits and the like that went unnoticed behind the play or missed by the umpires we still call them umpires,do we not ? or (is it a refree now)? I suggest in light of the latest debacle We organise a march (Rally) with all other clubs / supporters on AFL House and really let them know what we think. We gave it to the FD and board and players for that crap they dished up against the Weagles. They responded by showing they hurt from the criticism they copped. Now its our turn again to stand up, not just for a player in question but for the whole club and our unique game and what these idiots are doing to our game. WE MARCH ON AFL HOUSE They heard us loud and clear when we vented our disgust with the shoddy performance 2 weeks ago. Lets take it to another level we have the numbers (ie twitter and facebook) everyone from all clubs have voiced their disgust. For too long we have been lead by the nose, the whipping boys Well no more mister nice guys, we mean business LETS MARCH!

Breaking News Due to a salary cap breach The Bye will be stripped of points and any further games will be deemed as a walkover. 'Big Night Out' and a few others yet to be named have been getting paid bonuses not disclosed on the Byes Books, Byes' CEO yet to make any comment.
-
The coach of the bye Cara Van Parke just announced he might risk a fine and select " dirty weekend' to add some muscle to the team,as a late inclusion. Must be concerned using this ploy to try and put us off our game plan.
-
Twitter just let it slip Bye team may not lineup as selected Wikipedia could be a late selection. Could be the only one that has all the answers to curb Jurrah.

Got this from the BYE FC Web Page For those not familar with the players. The Bye Booze Bus - Roams all over the ground, Used to stop playmakers Couch - Tends to rest on his laurels. Used as a resting ruck TV - On his day can tally big scores Holiday - Takes the brunt of the workload Relations with the Missus - Week to week proposition prone to have off games On its day can blow a game apart Studying - Reads the play well, not scared to get stuck in Long drive - Roams all over the ground, tends to break down with injury Partying - Likes to go hard early, lacks stamina Footy Show - Talks up teammates will influence a result. Radio Stint - 1st game back after a lay off , (suspended for abuse) Twitter - Keeps getting brownlow votes , high possesion winner Family Time - Underrated, keeps plugging away Kids Classes - when on his game can score heavily, but tends to lose interest. Facebook - racks up the stats, plays anywhere. Relaxation - Drifts in and out of the game, often gets caught out napping Friends - Front runner, wont be sighted if the going gets tough. McDonalds - inside or outside player, has many tricks, one to watch. Physio time - Big bodied, great tackler, likes to hurt the opposition Work experience - relies to much on teammates to help, lucky to play (Computer did a hammy at training) Remote Communities - Team player, capable of doing anything Tiwi Islands - Stay at home forward, goal sneak Sub: Sin Bin - Hard and tough, needs to curb his temper
