Trade Targets
Not only did most of the key players they brought in cost first round picks (and more ...), they mostly came across when the Lions were struggling and had plenty of draft picks and salary space to play with. Not all that different to what we did with the likes of Lever and May back in the day. Lions also managed to get some go-home picks, e.g. Charlie Cameron.

Get Cameron Bruce?
They may lose Daniher.

"This break is exactly what we needed". From 25:55

No coincidence either that in both of those seasons we missed finals the preceding year. (i.e. longer off-season/break).

Helped along by the specifics of their situation: Academy picks, extra cap space, location etc. etc. (Not disagreeing with your premise either).

On paper. The team you're able to get on the field and keep on the field (consistency) is something else.

Nathan Bassett to Dees as Forwards Coach?
Then what does that tell you about our midfielders? (Though do accept they were mostly cooked this year )

Trade Targets
Always exciting to land a big name in the trade period, but those trades are comparatively rare especially once you take out the go-home trades. Hunter retiring helps but I don't see that we have the $$$ available to attract any big fish. I imagine the focus will be on the draft - as it probably should be - with some depth players brought in to plug holes and replenish the stocks. Personally, wouldn't mind a KP Defender. May and McDonald aren't getting any younger. Perhaps that's what they're hoping for out of Derkson.

Lachie Hunter Retires
Was a smart pickup in 2023 and gave us a genuine winger opposite Langdon, allowing Brayshaw to move back into the middle. This year age, injury and who knows what else got the better of him, but thanks for pulling on the red and blue.

Agree and all, but any future Brisbane picks are going to be low for what they are given that it's Brisbane/a top 4 side. That F1 could fall into the twenties.

Trade Targets
For all the talk of trades and Tim Lamb, the trade pool is generally pretty shallow and not all clubs dip into it. In any season there are clubs who don't trade in any players, or perhaps only one.

Just a little bit selective perhaps? Also not entirely accurate. Daniher was traded in 2020, and for the Dogs you've omitted Coffield who hasn't exactly transformed their team. You've also omitted the trading of 8 teams, which completely skews your comparisons. Cherry-picking. You've also omitted players traded OUT, which also falls under list management. Even amongst the clubs you've listed there are a few who would be on a net loss when you look at who they've lost. e.g. Fremantle - Cerra, Schultz, Lobb, Henry were all established in their team. Finally, you can't compare without context. A team lower down the ladder with few big salaries to manage, lots of cap space and more high draft picks will always have a stronger hand come trade time.

Welcome to Demonland: Tom Campbell
"Campbell reached his 50th AFL game during the 2021 season, where he was lauded by his teammates and coaches for his leadership and guidance while playing tandem in the ruck with Todd Goldstein." "Considered a strong clubman and mentor to younger players, Campbell won the Saints 2023 Best Clubman Award, with the Saints’ Executive General Manager of Football describing Campbell’s impact on the club as ‘profound." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Campbell_(footballer,_born_1991)

Welcome to Demonland: Tom Campbell
This. Also, no-one who can play regular game time as the number 1 ruck is coming for anything lower than our ANB pick 25.

Low risk, almost certainly low outlay, provides cover. The other point for mine is at the very least he helps keep Casey competitive - essential in terms of the development of younger players and keeping pressure on the AFL players. You can't learn to implement a game plan or even learn much at all if you're being knocked from pillar to post each weekend. No accident that Casey were strong from around 2018 > 2023. We've lost BB, Schache, Tomlinson and effectively Smith who were all Casey regulars, we need some decent talls with a bit of experience or our reserve team will fall off a cliff, which won't help anyone.

Hopefully got a rocket in his exit interview, but not holding my breath that it'll do anything. The moment to step up was 12 months ago.

But Taylor and his team are watching Reserves and State league matches. Not to mention drafts, so they would follow players going forward. Players like Fullarton would fall in that basket. But I don't agree that we're failing - shocking though that may seem to some here. We have minimal cap space or picks, and when you trade in lower-ranked speculative players on low salaries and even lower picks for depth you can't complain when they don't set the world on fire. Every team has 44 players, and 25% of those will either never play an AFL game or establish themselves at AFL level. We're no exception. The fact that some traded players don't make it is the norm, not the exception. Lamb has kept the list together and we don't have salary cap issues. Tick. He's doing the essential part of his job well.

Farewell Alex Neal-Bullen
Chandler doesn't have the fitness. Though almost no-one has ANB's fitness and ability to run all day. Understand the criticisms of ANB's onfield shortcomings, but I think people are underestimating what he brings both onfield and off as a leader. Will be missed at a time when leadership is something we're crying out for post-Gus and given the Oliver/Trac/Smith issues. Thank god Melksham did enough to earn himself another year.

Not disagreeing, but odd because he was definitely seen and used as a ruck (+ forward) at Brisbane.
