  1. I refer you to the Wake in Fright thread, you could do a lot worse than get along to see this great film. Also I would recommend Not Quite Hollywood as a great introduction to the Australian Film industry. I realise that I am starting to sound like a Aussie Film zealot but they are great films in their own right.
  2. Has anyone an update on Scully, I have noticed that the last couple of weeks he has not featured in the "Best" for Dandenong. Is he on school duties?...he does play for Dandenong doesn't he?
  3. I don't know about you but I have started looking at the run in to the end of the season. If one buys into the notion that we can only win 2 1/2 more games for the season here are my thoughts on who and why: All of North Melbourne, Richmond and Port are very beatable but we have already beaten the toigs once, Port will bring their Flat Track Bully game plan to play us and probably sneak a win and we are playing the Roos at the Dome (enough said). We are also playing a couple of other teams who we will do well to stay with for the whole game: eg The Cats at Skilled. This brings me to the ones that I hope don't get away: After a number of very close and honorouble losses, I hope that we come up against a rampant Freo and beat them from 54 points down at half time (just for old times sake) Don't forget, they did put us out of the 2006 finals campaign so we do owe them. The following week we come up against Carltank (for the first time this year) I don't need to go into all of the history of this club but suffice it to say that it would be so sweet to be the team that derails their failed finals campaign with an upset win. Finally we have the Sainters who could very possibly be undefeated when we meet. It would be nice to be the team that spoils their perfect record for the year by finishing with a draw against them. This would take us into the end of the season without a loss in the final 3 rounds and quite a lot of belief to take into the preseason still keeping the PP in tact.
  4. Don't be so sure that Wheatley will be delisted, yes we are a young list and we are all wanting to see the young kids come through but they do need support. A good list has a wide range of ages on it and Wheats is surely one of those older bodies (he is only 27 I think) that we must keep playing. Our draft penalties from a few years ago have really starved us of talent at that age group and I just think that our youngsters won't benefit from a complete clean out at the top end. I also think that Robbo is needed as long as he takes the first defender. Both of them will benefit from a proper pre-season so hopefully they will go around again
  5. For goodness sake, get over yourself!! this is not about the MFC, this is about Jim and his family. Ludicrous statements like yours have no place on these forums at this time. If you have ever dealt with this sort of affliction, you will know that at this time everything else becomes irrelevant and it becomes all about the idividual. And anyway, a great man like Jim would cringe to hear such pathetic utterances.
  6. I just turned on the channel 9 news this morning to hear them report that Jimmy Stynes is stepping down due to illness! Has anyone heard any more about this? Apparently he wont disclose the nature of the illness but it is with immediate effect. If this is true it is an absolute tragedy for him and his family. FWIW it has been confirmed on channel 7 as well Get well Jimmy
  7. Young Master Watts has just become the player that I would most like to haver at a dinner party. He dealt with the hosting panel with ease and almost completely free of sound bites. Yet another example of what an impressive young man he is. As Hutchinson said, he is likely to be hosting the show in a couple of years and who would doubt it. He seemed to lick his lips at the prospect of Scully and Butcher coming to the club
  8. I do feel that people like Rohan connolly can do better. A short read of the team line up today has him dishing out a real back hander "...Melbourne of 2009 looks more competitive than last years version, the kids showing enough signs to keep what faithful there arecoming back....." Pity he couldn't get a crack in there about 4 wheel drives and the snow for gods sake. Doesn't the fool realise that we have just passed 30,000 members in an extremely testing time for our great club. This is some achievement when some of our rival teams with a few more wins on the board are doing worse in the membership stakes. On a more positive note, there is a great article about Flash on page 5 of the Age today, (sorry no link from me). He is impressing me more and more, he is showing all the leadership aspirations that a club like ours is crying out for. Maybe the next great Melbourne skipper? Go Dees!!!!!!!
  9. The thing I like about the looks of Butcher and Scully is their apparent readiness for the top level. With another season under our current recruits belts, we are looking at starting next season with: Watts Butcher Scully Blease Strauss and Jurrah ready to go. Not a bad influx of talent.
  10. I am told that Robbo is in the lineup for Sunday A little bit of experience in the forward line won't go astray. Maric is picked on a half forward flank as well. Some good inclusions!
  11. True I'm afraid, its on the MFC website. Out for the year and preparing for 2010
  12. Absolutely fantastic!! Well done to everyone who maintained the drive and commitment to achieve this fantastic result. 10 pages on this thread shows how important it has been to many, many people in the Demon Family.
  13. In 1983 under huge fanfare, MFC recruited Kelvin Templeton (Brownlow Medallist and enough said the better) and Peter Moore, Brownlow Medallist and out and out champion. At the time we were sitting at no 8 on a ladder made up of 12 teams and it was felt that these 2 champion players would make the difference at a struggling club. As I have said, Templeton was a downright ill advised move as his best years (and knees) were well and truly behind him but Peter Moore gave everything for his new club and even managed to win another Brownlow with the Dees. By 1986, his last effective year with Melbourne, we had slipped to 11th on the ladder and were heavily in debt for our troubles. The new breed of young kids who followed were the ones who formed the real future of our great teams of the late 80's. A young fellow called Stynes helped out quite a bit. What I am saying is that one marquee player in a young rebuilding team will not make a massive difference to the clubs fortunes, except maybe to provide some time for the youngsters to develop. And what he can most definitely do is unbalance the clubs focus and finances. To get Pavlich we would be looking at giving up at least our first couple of picks and maybe a youngster as well. With the club alreadyshowing such discipline by not rushing our future marquee player, JW into the Ones and generally managing the kids tells me that they have a strict plan that they are following for success and I can't believe that they would derail this plan at this stage with a one off signing. As another example, look at what Judd has done for Carlton, there is no doubting his supreme skills but he as one man has not been able , so far, to turn the Bl@£$es into anymore than a mediocre team. No Pavlich for me.
  14. Hmm I tipped the Pies  But wasn't it sweet  The Filth were pathetic all day I thought, the Bumbers were playing with no bench for a lot of the game deserved to be totally overrun. Made the toiges look well drilled in comparison
  15. Dees by 24 with Juice kicking 5 goals 2 and Robbo a late inclusion kicking 6!!!!!
  16. My 4 year old came rushing up to me at the end of the game and said "Dad! the dees just one their first game!!" after the last couple of years, I think he thought of all time!! May he see many more
  17. Agree, but it was obviously a very tricky wind, those 3 posters in a row could have been costly as well. Having said that, Frosty really seems to have sorted out his aggression on the field by channelling it into his game rather than trying to make clumsy statements and getting reported like in the past
  18. The sad thing is that compared to some of the extraordinarily brave thing s that he does every game, it was a fairly innocuous clash. Great player, he will be missed. FWIW, Peter Bruchner said it will be a minimum of 6 weeks probably much more
  19. I need new tyres for my car but can't replace them with Hankook, not available for my car
  20. Colin Sylvia with Nathan Carroll for regional development manager
  21. I was onto the club today about my son's junior membership (he has received 3 membership packs now!!) and asked the staff member how memberships were getting on. She replied that they are still going well with 500 joining on the North Melbourne match day and a steady stream each day. Come on all of you who haven't joined yet, let's keep the pressure on!!
  22. By my estimation, in a weekor 2 we will be left with only 3 players on the injury list. The down side is that one of thoseplayers is Garland but at least the squad is starting to develop a little bit of depth. Add in the sight of Watts and maybe Blease playing for Casey and things are looking a little more positive.
  23. Forgive me if there is somewhere on the site where this shows up, I am fairly new to Demonland, but is it possible to keep a thread going that regularly updates injuries and likely return times. Players like Aussie and Jack G must be getting close to a return at some level and reading the various reports from the weekend several players have returned to the available list recently. The players that seem to be injured at the moment are: Junior, Russian, Grimes, Wheatley, Bail?? Aussie Players that seem to be back playing at different levels are: Robbo, Strauss, Wrecker, MacNamara, Maric, Can anyone update this list? it would be great to see these guys placing a bit of selection pressure on the current senior 22
  24. According to the MFC Website JW will play with Casey next week - WATTS UP FOR CASEY DEBUT. That seems a whole lot sooner than originally discussed. I'm tipping a spike in the Scorpions gate takings for next week!
  25. Over the past 3 years we have seen a large number of young kids joining the club who all in one way or another appear to have certain strengths to bring to the game. Who do you think of these guys that we have seen or haven't seen much of can bring a touch of the X factor. For mine, Grimes seems to have leadership skills but more in a steady style a' la Junior, Maric looks like he will need a solid structure around him to really make an impact and Watts has been spoken of in enough length to fill several libraries. From what I have seen of him on youtube and indeed from what I have read about him, Sam Blease looks like the sort of mid-fielder that we are crying out for; skillful, fast and seemingly with a huge heart. It has been widely reported what he had to deal with through the loss of his Dad and it seems to have spurred him on with enormous determination. With some solid bodies around him, I hope that he will become a major part of our engine room.
