LJ really is the one that got away, despite the sizable compensation. The outcome in 2023 could have looked a lot different and we would have avoided the whole Brodie Grundy experience (schmozzle)

SCRUTINY & RESILIENCE by Whispering Jack
Dee*ceiving replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Thats a good point Elwood. I think the quote was refered to as 'from a source close to the probe'. That could also mean the the 'defense' side of the argument or an interemediary, if they exist in these probes? Either way I'd expect silence to be a requirement... ...and I thought similar re: phones, seems like players are compelled to hand them over. I did see an article where this occured in the NRL not to long ago. Presume it's a condition of the EBA or government funding/tax treatment possibly (or all of those)?- 27 replies

Forward Line & Backup Ruck Issues Going into 2024 and beyond ...
Dee*ceiving replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Very well put Dee-monic, though obviously difficult to accept. It's the vitriolic, sensationalistic, ravenous pride some media outlets seem to take when they stick the boots into us that makes us so defensive and bitter. I must say the club has done a better job at remaining stoic and taking the high road than I have managed, though I wish the club were more direct and timely in some of our retorts. -
SCRUTINY & RESILIENCE by Whispering Jack

That quote, allegeldy from someone close to the investigation and implied by the article to be employed by Sports Integrity Australia was downright defamatory, insulting, destructive and vindictive. The fact that someone, implied by the artcle, to be employed by an organisation with 'Integrity' in their name would even utter those words, in that order, aloud to anyone is disgraceful. As is any media organistion that blatantly and sensationally trotted them out. It is also a complete act of cowardice that no name was attributed to such 'strong words' The fact that the club and the AFL have constantly been saying they are not at liberty to discuss the case yet that quote (and article entirely) makes it to print implies to me there is far too little 'Integrity' at Sports Integrity Australia, in my opinoun.- 27 replies

Petracca: "When the pressure mounted... we crumbled"

In fairness, that's the quote used as the headline of the actual clipped video from the pod -
PRESEASON TRAINING: Friday 2nd February, 2024

Ravishing Rick Rude? https://images.app.goo.gl/ChQqMXhBqEKA7sKp6 or; Nature Boy Ric Flair? https://images.app.goo.gl/Vj4WsHXqYBA5bPuy8 or; Have I missed some mashed up reincarnation? Shattered if that's a yes! -
R15 1993 vs Geelong at the MCG. I always remembered it being epic and the stats certainly justify that memory. As a 12 year old I'd waited sometime to finally get to go to a game, could barely have been more fortunate. Despite 11 goals from G Ablett snr the Dees suck away with a 14 point win in a four quarter performance. https://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/1993/091119930710.html We only laid 17 tackles for the whole game, just incredible compared to today's stadards!

hmmm, we may need a succession plan

Wow, that's going from fine wine to a boiled lolly that's been dropped in the dirt in a matter of weeks

You're not wrong. Port then Adelaide back to back in Adelaide 5 days a part is an absolute joke
-
...and you're probably going to have to play them there at some point, wouldn't that week be best?

I don't think that's entirely fair on Ben. Though I would agree it would be difficult for a player with an active contract that guarantees several hundred thousand dollars in salary to retire. Unlike others in the workplace he doesn't collect superannuation or pension when retiring from AFL at age 33.

Why Melbourne Must Hire a Coach to Solve Their Forward Woes
Dee*ceiving replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
It's amazing how this post has aged in such a short amout of time. 🙄 2 hours ago I'd have agreed wholeheartedly Deemania! -
JW's behaviours were factors in his exit though. Haven't heard of any concerns in this space for JB?
-
Agree re: Bowey for high HF, worth a shot. Not sure that Salem has the pace or gut run for that role personally. I think for him to work it would need to be closer to a Melk/Jamie Elliot role. Remain inside 50, seek one on ones, create some space for others and relay on one touch gathers/disposals.
-
Thanks for your take Mo but 0.7 goals per game, eg. 1 goal in 7 games out of 10 makes it close to a goal a game in my mind. If you don't agree that's ok with me. Thanks for sharing your mathematical philosohies and I am glad I made you laugh. Best.
-
Agree. It was a long season for Salem after his thyroid issue followed by a knew complaint. His first 3 or 4 games after retruning were excellent. He was close to BOG for us v PA in the wet (IMO) and very good KB v Pies. He was clearly running on empty late in the season. I also agree with the other poster re: trying him forward. He has a low centre of gravity and uses his body well for his size and was once a one grab player.
-
28, has pace and some depth on his kicks. It's a yes from me particularly if exchanged for a pick we wouldn't use anyway. Averages close to 1 goal and 1 goal assist per game (although accuracy not good but he does take flying shots)
-
It's ok when they want to come here, but when they want to leave here that's purely unethical, unreasonable and unbearable!
-
Agree. Plus Petty, JVR and Fritsch are reliable shots at goal. Unfortunately not so for Fritsch in September, be good to know if that foot injury he suffered in R23 led to the reduced effectiveness. Suspect so...

Trading future draft picks is like playing with free money when you're anticipating a top 6 finish. Especially in the second round. You can always get that draft pick back either via FA exit, trading of players/and or other picks (that years or the next).
-
BTW, great management from the club to put this to bed early and not let it linger any longer than necessary. Not happening this year and let it be beyond that for now. Immediate action, restore focus on our targets for the remainder of this trade period.
-
Perhaps wishful thinking but it feels like the leadership are getting their ducks in a row for a serious tilt in 2024 fueled by the disappointments of 22 and 23. Good leadership and loyalty from Petty to opt in. Suspect Goodwin has sold the permanent forward role, (getting him out of the shadows of Lever and May) and in a section of the ground screaming for some leadership (particularly without Jake M).
-
I don't think we'll have the list spots for for all those picks. Looks like we'll take 3 picks to the draft and they might all be under 25
