Anyone that thinks Gys deserves a 1st round pick in exchange isn't seeing how value is determined at market. At the draft kids are picked nearly exclusively on potential. They will have exhibited the various skills and abilities over their junior journeys and arrive at combines and are ranked by those whose job it is. Are they drafted on what they can do or what the recruiters think they may do once brought into the AFL system ? It has to be the latter almost exclusively as they are almost unaminously untried at a senior level. One word sums it up, POTENTIAL. They are given "mystic" point values for potential. This value holds sway whilst all their actual proess is essentially hidden. This adds to the sometime lotto effect of the draft. Some kids come on, some don't. Valuable draft picks are essentially pegged to educated guessing. Once a kid enters the system and is unwrapped al is laid bare. The mystic value disappears and we are then able to see the real , raw recruit for what he is. After a little time a revaluation will occur as matter of course. A comparison of what the recruiters estimated will be put against what IS. His mystic value was pick 11 , his real value at trade is effectively now that plus a round, yes folks he's worth no more than a mid second at very best. He's been overtaken in the potential valuations by the new kids. We now KNOW what he's done. All current values are/will be based on that. We have a number of kids showing more. I'd take anyone's second rounder and roll the dice again.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHRIS DAWES
beelzebub replied to Norm Smith's Curse's topic in Melbourne Demons
Your on your own there cfe. Thats not what i said. Youve changed context to suit your arguments. Watts Will play back. Dawes fwd Clark Will play fwd. I sense any ideas of Clark rucking is when nothing else presents. He CAN ruck . How often ? Seldom. Martin offers little other than he can present at a contest. After that little. Spencer is better value as 2nd ruck on a day. -

Neeld and Harrington have both said that Clark 'could " be used on occasions to ruck. I see that as a back up situation and not part of any great scheme to get Clarky rucking. He is the kingpin of the fwd set up ( just that he can ) I would think Pedersen if snaffled could also o a pinch hit job. Both these are football brain players. martin unfortunately for all his ability and athleticism just gets lost in traffic often.Dawes is s forward, hes been secured as a forward to play as a forward. period. watts might have been drafted as a supposed fwd but hes playing his best footy across the half back and this is where i see his future.. a very able half back who can move fwd and score. What this tells me is these guys ( Neeld etc ) have eyes and a brain. They also have a plan . Im happy -
My commnentary pivoted mainly on the idea that its plain to see what and where we are going re draft and picks, they ( filth rellos) were somewhat bemused. They didnt see a lot of advantage gaining Lynch for Dawes , much of a muchness ( for them ) They can see a benefit in amassing picks and theyll wait to see what/who they pick up there. They both rated Dawes, said he just a had a poor season mainly due to injury and being played out of position. Both have reservations as to whether Bucks can put anymore silverware on the shelf ( they off course hope so ) Both would have preferred to retain Chris. They now see they might become exposed up fwd if any injuries present through the season. They see Collingwood attempting a top up / recruitment on the run, reckon they still have 3-4 with window open before any serious rebuilds. Thats where they see themselves, and still curious as to what Bucks is up to, then again it took them 5 or so to figure out Malthouse..lol They , for what its worth think we have turned a corner and should play 'ok' footy in 13...who knows in 14 onwards Interestingly neither were overly keen on Martin, they too would prefer a "Pedersen" type, play front and back, pinch hit in the ruck and quite sound footy skills. They see his type as more a footy player than Martin. I had to agree. Funny the things you gain talking outside of the norm. Both are reserved about Cloke. They worry they ( pies) might become too Buddy like and so understand the idea of Lynch but wonder what after him, so how wise the turnover in players etc. But alas, there was no hesitation in reinstating the bet for the next QB ...lol They still fancy themselves easily over us, but reckon we might just put up some resistance now last word; they thought CD a good pick up and wished him well.

probably in the last week *wink*

Id say we are back actually, back in the game that is. We should be able to compete now. What has changed not quite overnight but over the course of the last few weeks is the make up of our list and this will afford quite a different team dynamic for season 013 onwards. The weight of the world wont need to be quite the burden of such a young team, some older heads ( and shoulders ) can take up some of the load. The way we line up and consequently the way others match up on us should/will change. The insertion of Dawes into the front changes the abiilty of opposition teams targeting Clark and nullifying our minimalist attack has gone. This brings our 3rd fwd right back into the game. This is turn lifts opportunities for the crumbers. Momentum shifts. Dawes apart from being a decent forward target is actually one of the better forwards (acc to stats) in applying fwd defensive pressure. This is a bonus for the mids so often carved up from a very quick rebounding ball. But even here in the middle our stocks , almost universally appraised as having jumped a level though acquisitions , should contest and win their share of the ball. All this has knock-on effects The more attacking of the defenders , the likes of Watts and McDonald can impose their ability to push the ball forward more often. Better players mean you can move from being almost permanently on the back foot playing reactive football to being able to implement a style of game that youre being coached to do. Like a see-saw it doesnt take much sometimes to change things.

Not yet and thats a good opportunity to catch a few by surprise This time next year will be quite a different situation
-
Everything's important and thats plainly something we just didnt get for many years as we p!ssfarted around playing with this part of a setup, or that part. We added supposedly class and 'eliteness' here and there. There was just no holistic understanding that a team is organic in nature , all interconnected and only as good as its weakest point. we had a few weaknesses and that undermined anything we tried as it would all come crashing back the minute some vestige of finely tuned aspirant fell over. I do agree that this preseason will add something
-
Going to be some very serious competition for many spots now. The bar's been lifted. Itl be beyond some and for others a goal. More wheat Will be sorted, more chaff moved on. A good mate and inspired observer commented (albeit after a few Shirazs) " get this lot going and you just leaped over Port,Doggies,Roos ....should find yourselves playing up around under the 8 next year. If Clarko and Dawes can click and you can win and USE the ball in the middle, at least evens, you ought to worry a lot of teams. You might even become interesting to watch" Well heres hoping
-
The thing about that lower pick is i feel confident the fd Will find a viable foot soldier (at worst ) and thats fair enough . Weve still some talent waiting to come through, some forgotten in the current excitement lol Qb Will be fun (again )

think youll find there something more with Wines-Viney. Time will tell of course at the end of the day they are both fiercely competitive.
-
Funny... I live amongst filth, that and two very good mates are filthy too. Neither is particularly laughing. A comment from one is actually interesting : " seems clearer what you guys are doing than what Bucks is !!" Funny one can actually see what many here cant. The exchange of picks is not a cop out to us, it wont matter. It was a nothing pick to us. We get Dawes, and still have a pick if we want. Its all lucky dip down there anyways. "you guys are going to be hard to man up on now!!" thats the thing 2+2 = 5 ; some dont get it
-
Hes a good solid role player. Neeld seems able to rely on him . They cant all be stars, some just need to be consistent and effective.
-
Im guessing it wont be Sellar, itll be martin. Sellar does actually know what to do out there and doesnt look lost half the time
-
I think some may well be overlooking the synergy that a Wines-Viney teaming brings. These guys will feed off of each other. The way two tied competitors do, each trying to out do the other, a game within a game, the winner ? US !!

There's incredulity from some areas about what we're achieving / achieved to date. For some without a piece of silverware on the mantle to immediately verify our decisions then its apparently all doom and gloom. The only way to understand how good bad or otherwise the recent movements around the club are is to view them as history. We cant, yet. This club needed one almighty kick up its posterior, as well some might say a good smack around the head , in order to awake from its pending demise and then pull free of its slumber. We've done this, yet thats still not enough for some. I reckon some here would bemoan having to share 1st div lotto !! No ones kidding themselves, weve a long way to go but unless you have the people and the tools youre wasting your time. We HAVE the people, we have resources, but most importantly we now have direction and purpose.

Couldnt give a stuff what some are saying we ARE starting to get somewhere. Just the idea that others from outside are buying into us and wanting to be part of it is testament to this. We're on our way -

You can only provide the personnel and the tools, after that it's up to the players but the club and esp Neeld certainly seem to be fervently going about righting the wrongs and laying the pavement. One step, the another............
