At least the Tassie Hawks lost...

What about The Tassie T***S? -
BT is quite entertaining and he was giving reasonable assessments of what Melbourne had to do to stay in the game. If you want sledging dressed up as commentary try Mark Maclure and to a lesser extent Stan Alves on ABC when the dees are down, they really go to town.

Some good, insightful commentary on our beloved Demons: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/starting-over-20120421-1xe4r.html

When NicNat starts holding some of those big pack marks he will be sensational. Both Watts and he will be great footballers of the modern era, glad we got Watts. As for the game. Well apparently the Viking spacecraft is now heading past the outer heliosphere one hundred times the distance of the Sun to Pluto. That's about how far Melbourne is from these two teams and going in the wrong direction. PS Neeld would do well to start teaching some of our Dee boys how to do those bullet handpasses transacted by the Hawk players.

No buy-in for coach's broom, or '1979 and all that..."
bush demon posted a topic in Melbourne Demons
AFter visiting the MCG twice in recent weeks, listening to informed commentators in the papers and on the telly, and reading the (many) informed comments on here - plus 'ology - I feel that we have become a victim of a serial make-over. That's when a new administration comes in, bringing with it a new administration not to mention a new mantra. The mantra both spoken and unspoken, is that 'we' have all the answers (fitness/ structures/ game plan/ leadership groups etc) whereas 'before', 'they' were doing it wrongly ie 'couldn't believe how unfit they were and 'no game plan' etc The sudden drop-off of the senior players i don't think has to do with sooking as such but the lack of 'buy-in' and the unwillingness of our senior crew to put their dementia-inducing 'heads over the ball' to get the footy and win the points. if the older players are going to be dumped en masse, frankly davis i can't blame them. As two examples, Moloney and Jones must surely have been retained in some seniority position if only to maintain their footballing honour. those guys have given plenty. Finally, I don't agree with all the Green bashing that goes on. That guy has taken some huge hits in recent years and performed acts of courage which defy belief, he just isn't capable of that any more. we just don't seem to have the 'backs against the wall' mentality of teams like North. As for 1979, this year is beginning to stink far worse than the end of that decade. And, yes i did stay till the final siren on Saturday despite nearly being sucked up in a vortex of departing dee supporters. -
Just want to get in first. C'wood have been in doldrums since late last year, not a patch on their pre-Buckley-conjecture era. The fallout may be spectacular.

When I first read the title of this thread I assumed that someone at Demonland was suggesting the players were applying themselves like androids, which may explain our poor performance over the first two rounds. If this is the case, could Hymie from Get Smart be rookied as a gorilla-forward? Daleks could be used on the interchange bench to zap a few opponents and the robot from Lost In Space could be used as a runner and cry, "Danger, Danger!" if Jack Riewoldt starts taking a few grabs. A cheer squad of fembots wouldn't go astray either...

A friend told me this morning that G. Ablett flew to the U.S during last year's grand final because he couldn't bear to watch Geelong playing. Does anyone else have any memories of this?

How many would the Cats have had missing from their best 18? Menzel, Vardy...?

Hawkins' kicking is worse than TS! All credit to Geelong, they had not won a flag since '63 under Bobby Davis, despite maintaining an attractive style of football. Have stayed thereabouts over this period and survived four heartbreaking flag losses in late 80's and 90's and now are reaping the bounty of their brilliant footballing style. it is not a matter of demanding standards; the players demand it of themselves, and it shows. i would like to see their new recruits lined up beside our draft-assisted assets over the last few years, incredibly they would come out ahead.

struck me as mechanistic and robotic... same as they play... i think the players have overdosed on 'system', 'structure' and sermonising.

smith got sacked because of his role in barassi's departure. both barasssi and smith were considering their options vis a vis carlton and richmond at the end of '64 (Red Fox). Melbourne's list was heading south around this time. no full forward no centre half forward no ruck. over-reliance on smith's despotism. other clubs using money to buy premierships. this trend continue until late '80's and more money buying premierships. finals-wise we have had a pretty good run in the afl until the end of the daniher era, we now seem to be reverting to type. melbourne still seen as a team of gentleman footballers a la tom wills and current-day player blazers.

"Just when things couldn't get any worse". ps what does faulty debt mean? i put it like that because the club is currently being trivialised in the media by the use of headlines which 'say it all' ie yesterday's murdoch-son-sun: Dees self-deestruct. i am hopping mad how the press are trying to kill off our club... smith says we are dysfunctional... have richmond or footscray or essendon tin rattlers knocked off $5m like our club just did?

he got a very very lot of leather in the fourth quarter, if only he had played like that earlier when the game was on the line.

Craig Cameron and Barry Prendergast ... What have you done!
bush demon replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
There was an article in The Age today setting out St Kilda's poor top ten draft selections over the last several years, and they were only two heartbeats from two premierships. i think the period mentioned was 2003 to 2009. -
This is my considered response to saturday (after posting a de-posted post in the early hours of this morning: We were seated near the MFC interchange bench on Saturday and I was quite amazed at the distressed state of players when they came off for a spell. This was not last quarter i am talking about, this was ten minutes into the first quarter. Unless you are close up you don't appreciate just how much running and work players do, all in the name of 'structure'. i would put down our last half fade out to much of this pointless running to fit in with the utopia of the coaching bench. on the other hand, the guys who had the ball *(brisbane) weren't getting tired, they were just zipping the ball round with hand and foot. so my request is , just occasionally let the players 'play'. let them off the leash and create some unpredictability within the minds of the opposition. the current obsessions are robbing teams, notably ours of one of the greatest assets on the ground, the football brain, aka 'footy smarts'.
