With the Pies it is pretty simple. About 8 - 10 very skilled ball handlers. The best player in the game. A brother also an excellent player. More AFL experience than any other side. Total buy in and selflessness by the players. Pace to burn. Reasonable goal kicking skill. Well coached. Ability to recruit players from other clubs. To a lesser extent, huge support which probably leads to favorable umpiring on nearly every occasion. Can you see the 78m penalty being given against the Pies or the soft free to McStay for a goal, or the ridiculous DeGoey free where he dropped an opponent not in play, all paid at crucial times. A bunch of mates in the MRO and Tribunal also helps.

Pies were given a 50m penalty that was measured at 77.7 metres. That is a massive mistake. Then McStay gets a goal from a push that wasn’t there. I find it funny that bad mistakes by umpires in Pies games, seem to nearly always be in their favour.

I don’t think Viney had one positive possession, not one, he was actually a total liability. Clarry wasn’t too much better. Tracc again was poor with his disposal but slightly better than the other two.

That might be the way it’s heading.

Today’s result will be interesting. A hope for a revival or possibly season over. Membership numbers could be seriously affected too.

Since 2021 I would guess we have kicked far more behinds than goals and far more behinds than our opponents. We know it cost us probably 3 of our 4 lost finals since 2021.

Don’t think we should categorize Kentfield yet, as he hasn’t been AFL match fit since he arrived. This year may not be enough either, as he started so far behind. He is a big boy and if he can play enough VFL and gets match fit, we will be able to evaluate him then. Adams, Sesto and Jeffo are starting to look ok now in their 3rd year with us.

Great players are great players and they find a way until they physically and mentally can’t.

Darcy has got another opponent out of the game early. Not lethal, but knows how to contact players.

Remember last season?

Still have to practice taking out the pencil and paper from the pocket, holding it at arms length in front of the body and adding a stroke for a score. Then putting the paper and pencil back in the pocket and looking like you have achieved a monumental task.

But if Max gets injured, we will have only one tall, or in JVR’s case, medium tall forward. We need a key forward with BBB’s height.
