WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - LUKE JACKSON
Let me throw a cat amongst the pigeons, hypothetically speaking. What if our real target is Green, with Jackson as our next choice. We let it be known that we want Jackson. GWS trade up to be able to get Green and another top 5 player, believing we will take Jackson. If GWS also rate Jackson above Green and we nominate Green they get one or the other but not the second player, if they match a Green bid. This could have given us the chance to get Green if he is our target. Could this be the case, or am I just looking for intrigue?

The Splitting of Pick 8
Am I missing something. Didnât Crows trade their pick 4? Why are we discussing what they will do before 8?

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - LUKE JACKSON
Picket, we need to consider why so many âexperts â are saying this kid is so special and could in fact now be rated at number 2. We need to consider why it is being suggested that if we nominate Green, GWS wonât match and will take Jackson. Are GWS recruiters idiots too? We need to consider why it has been stated that if Crows kept 4 and Jackson got to 4 they would take him. Are Crows recruiters idiots too? We need to consider that our recruiters would have looked at all the negatives, like DLâs have and despite them, feel that his positives outweigh those negatives easily. Also that they see him as a special talent, possibly rarely a chance to be attainable by us and good enough to bypass other more âsafeâ selections, like Green and Young. Further that they have conducted this process using experienced people over many months, maybe even years. We need to consider that maybe they see him solving our much needed extra key forward role and later developing as Maxâs understudy, filling our most needed holes, other than small forward which is easier to fill with later picks or trades in the future. Lastly we need to consider that maybe Taylor and co know more about the potential draftees than we at DL do, highly unlikely of course but just maybe.

No. It has nothing to do with players sliding to us, we have first live pick. However if we nominate Green and they match and then lose pick 4 in the process GWS only get 1 top 5 player. If we donât nominate Green they will get him and another player at 4. To ensure we donât nominate Green we could get something from them. It might be a later pick swap or the promise of a player next year, whatever, but at least get something. Otherwise we allow them to get 2 top 5 players with no issue.

I meant some sort of deal to ensure we donât nominate Green, otherwise they will get only Green and have wasted their traded picks.

I just wonder if we have done a deal with GWS of some sort to ensure they get their extra top 5 player. It is a huge gamble if not by them.

Tom Green (Drafted by GWS Giants)
I would be doing a deal for a player next year with GWS, to stop us bidding on Green and making them have wasted their upgrade.

Splitting Draft Pick 3
We will get the player we want most likely even if it is Green. If GWS matched our pick on Green they would lose the extra top 4 player and would effectively have traded for nothing. This way they get who they want after our pick and then get Green later. One thing to factor in is that Green has a younger brother who apparently is also pretty good and if we got Green I wonder if the brother could be switched into our Academy zone? Anyone have the answer on that?

Young could be the Shaw replacement.

Can we just assume that if we take Jackson with what could be the first live pick, it is because we think he is special. Young is probably a safe pick, but Jackson is obviously seen as more than a ruckman. If he can play as a key forward as well, we have solved 2 areas in one pick. We get our 3rd key forward, who can also be Maxâs eventual replacement. If Bradtke keeps developing he can hopefully also play forward and share the ruck with Jackson when Max is gone. We can get another running defender or mid with 8 and that leaves small forwards as the last target. I canât believe we take Jackson unless we see a future star and if he is, we will have done well. Personally I am not a recruiter and know very little of these guys, so as with Oliver, I trust Taylor to get it right with both picks under 10, as they are too valuable to get wrong. A couple of guys however who know Jackson well, claim he will be a star. These big guys who can play are like diamonds, as proved by Essendon keeping an injured one, because they had no replacement. BTW I spoke to him last night and he is a nice guy.

And there is the answer. We can all have our opinions and good on everyone who has contributed to the draft discussions, but in the end the professionals will do the job, letâs hope they get it right. This draft is giving me a headache.

Agree. I was just saying that where a player comes from is considered by the club.

Not if they are on the bottom of the ladder and can do a Carlton and Bell would. Also you are 2 years down the track with the kid and if you draft another you start again.

Not if Freo are on the bottom or close to it. With Bell negotiating that could be an outcome where you get nothing, like Martin this year.

Then watch The Eagles and Dockers offer him the world in 2 years to go home, if he is any good.

Geelong Eyeing Our Picks
Correct, get 2 great players instead of 1 and 2 maybes.

With now Jacobs and Mummy plus 2 developing rucks and forwards Cameron to resign plus Finlayson and Himmelberg, I wonder if GWS really want Jackson. IMO if they canât trade up a pick they match Green and take him.
