  1. And that is why I believe that North Melbourne will end up in Tassie - to meet the political imperatives of Government, while still allowing the establishment of an 18th team in WS.
  2. Tom Scully will be playing at Casey Fields on Saturday at 1:00pm. He plays for Vic Metro. The day's 3 matches at Casey Fields are: Victoria Country vs Northern Territory at 11:00am Victoria Metro vs Queensland at 1:00pm Tasmania vs Western Australia at 3:00pm He is also a local boy, has played there before (last year in the same championships) and would know his way there very well already.
  3. Without wanting to debate the merits of the AFL's position, but taking it as a given, my theory is based on the following: • the AFL sees no growth (read additional TV $) in Tassie as the people are already footy mad and watch as much footy on TV as they can • the AFL’s view is that only a small % penetration in a huge market (ie Sydney) will generate large additional revenues • the AFL is committed to Western Sydney and will not back away • the AFL has received regular lobbying from the Tasmanian Government and population for a team to be established in Tassie instead of Western Sydney, but will not substitute Tassie for WS for the above reasons • the AFL has been a bit embarrassed by the Senate Inquiry into the matter, and can only afford to thumb its nose at the Australian Parliament to some extent. North Melbourne cannot survive in its current incarnation for more than a few years. Its white knights have disappeared, and its membership levels will flag once the temporary enthusiasm of non-North supporters wanes. Solution – offer once again to North the prospect of a relocation, but this time to Tassie. It: • is closer to its traditional supporters in Melbourne than the Gold Coast was • gives Tassie a team • gets rid of the political pressure • neutralises the argument of those who say the AFL should be in Tassie rather than in WS • retains an even number of teams at 18.
  4. It was the reserves 4th win in a row - something that hasn't happened for at least a decade.
  5. Only 2 or 3 games a year - the sort of low crowd games where a good dollar can be earned with crowds of 20-25,000 with (comparatively) little in the way stadium management and operational costs. MFC v Freo etc
  6. Stynes has made a couple of comments: * world class training venue (when referring to the range of facilities available in and around Casey Fields) * best facilities of any AFL club (when referring to the total range of facilities available to MFC) I doubt that you could argue with either statement. The facilities for MFC will be: Casey Fields (pre-season and a weekly training session during the season) • full sized and fantastically maintained oval to be used by MFC and the Casey Scorpions • fully equipped gym, medical rooms, offices for footy department • 2.2 km criterium cycling track available for cross-training located 500 metres from the oval • all-weather regional athletics complex available for cross-training located 200 metres from the oval (to be built by October 2010) • $38 million aquatic and recreation facility 500 metres from the oval with gymnasium, pools spa, sauna etc (opening next weekend) Rectangular Stadium (full time base, but major use during the AFL season) • State of the art strength and conditioning facilities shared with Melbourne Storm and Melbourne Victory • Access to the Gosch’s Paddock oval for on-field training 500 metres from the rectangular stadium MCG • Administrative and governance headquarters • Home matches • MCC relationship • Historic link That’s not a bad package compared to what MFC has endured for 25 years.

  8. Maybe your friend had better go and see Steph on Saturday at Casey Fields, seeing he's being dropped tonight.
  9. In 2008, these were the 10 Melbourne matches with less than 25,000: Round Home Away Venue Crowd 21 Richmond Fremantle MCG 24881 1 WB Adelaide TD 24835 4 NM Melbourne MCG 23427 14 Melbourne Brisbane MCG 23278 18 St Kilda PA TD 22878 13 St Kilda Fremantle TD 22440 22 NM PA MCG 22144 17 Melbourne NM MCG 21330 7 Melbourne Fremantle MCG 19423 20 Melbourne WC MCG 17958
  10. The contract with Etihad owners stops new stadiums and allows use of pre-existing ones (which includes Princes Park). There will be all sorts of maouevres as parties jockey for position. IMO the influential, educated and articulate residents of Carlton and the MCC will not allow the re-use of PP for AFL matches - they've got rid of them and so they won't allow even small AFL matches back in. However, the AFL might decide that it's worth pushing it - if only to get a concession from Etihad that another (new) venue can be admitted to the mix in lieu of the rights to use PP. Perhaps a venue 40km away that Etihad won't see as a threat. You never know how it might work out, but I hope MFC gives it a really good shot.
  11. Over 10k at the NAB Challenge game Hawks v Esendon in 2007. Capacity (which is almost all standing) would be 20,000 approx. 3rd stadium issues need to be addressed - this could be a viable location for MFC or NM v Gold Coast, Western Sydney, Freo. There could conceivably be a 25,000 capacity boutique stadium which could accommodate quite a few games. I posted an analysis a few weeks ago (which i could hunt out in a spare moment) about the number of matches < 25,000 people in Melbourne.
  12. Item 1 of the agenda for 2 June: http://www.casey.vic.gov.au/meetings/artic...?Item=14187#jun It's essentially the same as the 18 May report. Council meeting starts at 6:30pm.
  13. In the 2000 draft Riewoldt went #1 and Koschitkze #2. In 2001 Riewoldt played 6 games due to injury; Kosi played 20 and won the Rising Star. In 2002 Riewoldt played 22 games and won the Rising Star; Kosi played 4 games due to injury. Both were ready to play in 2001. Watts is still a school boy - he'll be on the ground next year. Let him find his feet in the VFL this year, and maybe play a few AFL games towards the end of the season (in Melbourne - maybe Richmond, North & Freo in successive weeks). Then let him concentrate on his study and exams for the next 3 months.
  14. The Mighty Convicts! No sash on the jumper - just a diagonal chain.

  17. Clearly, lots of works needs to be done. But there are AFL matches at Carrara. I went there last year for St KFC v NM, and I'm going on Saturday. It's not too flash, and is something that Casey Fields could easily become. As far as the wider community goes, how wide do you go? It's a question that needs to be strategically considered because there may well be greater benefits in concentrating in Casey than relatively brief and a small numberr of visits to Darwin. MFC supporting people from Casey are far more likely to become regular footy going members than people in Darwin - it's a long drive from Darwin to the MCG, but it's not far from Casey.
  18. Two step process: 1 only a little infrastructure investment - poor spectator amenity, but very cheap to run 2 infrastructure investment to the standard of Carrara, Manuka etc - improved spectator amenity, but still very cheap to run and home to a couple of matches a year such as MFC v Gold Coast, Western Sydney, Port Adelaide, Freo etc A 3rd step could see an upgrade to Skilled Stadium standard, but that would require a significant investment. You would not want to justify such investment by taking too many MFC home games away from the MCG, but if it was developed as the 3rd Melbourne “boutique” stadium (15-25,000 people with reasonable amenities) it could in fact pick up the additional demand across a range of Melbourne-based clubs generated by the additional clubs in the national comp. And MFC could be in the driving seat, as the key associated AFL club because of its association with Casey Council and the Casey Scorpions.
  19. Against the flow, I'll say it's not a good idea. MFC needs to have a clear strategic focus, and I don't think the scattergun effect as rusty outlined is too strategic. Go for short term $, or go for longer term membership development in Casey. I don't think MFC can appeal to all sectors concurrently. $300-$400,000 for a game in Darwin instead of a loss at the MCG sounds great, but what would the outcome be if the same match was played at Casey Fields? Reportedly Geelong make around $700,000 from a home game at SS. Obviously CF doesn't have the same standard of amenity (yet?) that SS has, but if the objective is to stamp a footprint on a city with a long term population of close to half a million, it may be better to focus efforts in that direction.
  20. If you have been following this at all you'd know that the Casey Council approved it in August last year. Since then MFC has raised a number of issues, which have all now been finally resolved. Have a read of the Council report for some background: http://www.casey.vic.gov.au/meetings/artic...?Item=14187#may (May 19 agenda) Sure the Council deferred it for 2 weeks when they considered it last week, but it took 9 months to get from the stage of Council having approved it last year to MFC having signed off. I don't read the Council insinuating that they're going back and forth in the article: "But at last week’s council meeting, some first-term councillors said they needed more time before they could make up their minds. " The Mayor, Geoff Ablett said “I want to get this up and over the line. At the moment some councillors say they need a bit more time and information. I want to give them the opportunity to meet with the club and allay any of their concerns so that we can come back to this chamber in two weeks time with unanimous support for this fantastic deal.” "Demons football operations manager Chris Connolly said the club was happy to give councillors a bit more time." The 5 time mind changer is only one of the Councillors - not the Council.
  21. That's a bit rich - a demon praying! Still I guess it depends who you're praying to. Gold Coast/Tweed Heads Forecast for Wednesday Evening Fine. Light winds. Precis: Fine. 23. Last year I went up for North Melbourne v St Kilda. Spent the aftermatch at a pub on the Esplanade opposite the surf club. It was full of Saints supporters (which was good for me).
