  1. I'm going to the game - flight up Saturday morning & back on Monday night. I just hope the weather improves for a 3 day Qld break!
  2. And a couple of articles from other local papers: http://www.cranbournejournal.com.au/news/l...lt/1521962.aspx http://cranbourne-leader.whereilive.com.au...cision-delayed/
  3. To be reconsidered at the Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 2 June @ 6:30pm.
  4. If you want a quicker way: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sou...606995&z=11 Freeway/main road - not much traffic - most of the way.
  5. I recall Ch 10 doing the Sunday game - can't recall ABC doing it, but you may be right.
  6. Wouldn't that be funny - VP as an AFL venue, but insufficent capacity for Collingwood to be able to play matches there.
  7. Play it at Casey Fields, get 20,000 and pocket even more. PLUS, it embraces the community even more that the club is wooing, and where its long term membership growth can be generated from.
  8. We don't need, and can't afford, another $300-$400 million stadium seating 50,000 people. In 2008: • the MCG hosted: o 39 AFL H&A matches with a minimum crowd of 27,000 and an average crowd of 54,154 o 7 others with a maximum crowd of 25,000 where the average crowd was 21,777 • TD hosted: o 43 matches with a minimum crowd of 27,000 and an average crowd of 54,154 o 3 others with a maximum crowd of 25,000 where the average crowd was 21,777. Other than 2 matches of MFC v NM, each of the 10 “others” involved a low-drawing interstate team coupled with a low drawing Melbourne team (except for Richmond in one case, which may be explained by weather [max of 14 degrees in Melbourne & coldest minimum on record for August for Mt Buller]. There were also 6 other matches played interstate which were Melbourne teams home games (3 of NM’s at Gold Coast, 2 at Manuka and 1 at TIO) which would be attracted to a low capacity 3rd stadium in Melbourne. This does not include 4 Hawthorn matches at Aurora Stadium or 8 Geelong matches at Skilled Stadium. So, 16 matches with very poor crowds does not justify building a stadium of 50,000 capacity at Docklands (or 40,000 which is the current suggestion). It should be smaller and at Casey Fields, and funded by a small proportion of what would have otherwise funded the 40,000 or 50,000 seat stadium (ie the Government’s profits from the E Gate development at Docklands near the North Melbourne station).
  9. The Docklands administrators don't want competition - that's why the clause is in the contract. So, would Collo want a third stadium developed at: * Princes Park, which is just a few kms away OR * at Casey Fields, which is about 50 km away. If he can't object to Princes Park because it enjoys existing stadium status, and he's given a choice to substitute an unproven, relatively distant, venue instead of Princes Park being used, I would expect he would allow the substitution. That makes Casey Fields a quite likely proposition.
  10. Male, 50-60 Casey Fields is about 5km from home, and I go to most home matches. I also go to Scorps' away games (I've been as far as Hobart [against Tasmania when there was a Tassie team] and Warrnambool [taking VFL footy to the country]).
  11. That may be what the contract currently says, but I think Collo (as CEO of Docklands) would be prepared to consider a variation which allowed the AFL to develop a small ground at Casey rather than at Princes Park. It might just be better for Docklands to not have any competitor stadium just a few kms away.
  12. North made a terrible mistake when it rejected the AFL's relocation offer to the Gold Coast. With such a low natural supporter base, the goodwill of many in taking out an extra membership to help out the Roos was never going to be sustainable for the many years necessary to get the club back on its feet. Tick, tick indeed!
  13. When you are born you have your 1st year. After 1 year of life you have your 1st birthday. At the end of your 150th year you have your 150th birthday. So, if you were born in 1859, you would celebrate your 150th year from your birthday in 2008 until your birthday in 2009.
  14. I'm going There are free regular buses from the Gold Coast strip. I don't know the details re various routes. One bus route is from Pacific Fair at Broadbeach (I only know about that one because I’m staying at Broadbeach, from where the Gold Coast Stadium is about 10-15 minutes inland).
  15. Absolutely positive it is on TV. The game was moved from 2:00pm to 1:10pm to become the TV game because the North Ballarat Oval was unplayable for the originally scheduled NB v Collingwood game (which has been moved to 2:00pm at Princes Park). The TV broadcast is from 1:00pm on ABC1 TV. But still go to Coburg rather than watch it on TV to give the boys support.
  16. This will be the only opportunity to get Casey as an AFL venue. If Princes Park gets a toehold we can forget about Casey Fields. There won't be a 4th AFL venue operated in Melbourne because any available games will be scheduled at the other 3. It just depends on the scale of the 3rd venue. The only way Casey will get off the ground is as a small-scale venue and only if the E Gate proposal is just an AFL negotiating tool to get a better deal out of the MCC and Etihad management. IMO it would certainly be a waste of hundreds of millions of dollars to build another elite stadium in central Melbourne, and a smaller stadium is all that is needed.
  17. Two comments: Viability of a small ground Moving games away from the G for crowds of less than 20,000 would be eminently sensible, but don’t move them to Canberra or the Gold Coast. For a couple of games a year (eg MFC v Freo and MFC v Gold Coast) - just move them to Casey. Casey can accommodate 20,000 people, albeit mainly standing. Run on a theme of taking footy back to the suburbs, it might attract people with a nostalgic bent (I used to stand every week, and from 1/2 time in the reserves). It would also still be attractive to most Melbourne based member. And it would be super-attractive to the Casey demographic the club is seeking to engage with. With the upgrade of player/administration facilities to follow the (hopefully soon) agreement between the Council and MFC, it could be further developed to be a basic AFL venue. It wouldn’t be awash with spectator facilities and it wouldn’t have corporate dining etc, but it could run at a very tidy profit with very little additional investment. The 3rd Stadium It would cost around $350 million to build a 40,000 seat stadium (the 31,000 rectangular stadium is costing $270 million). That is a lot of money to build another stadium around the corner from the 50,000 seat Etihad Stadium. The argument is that development of the E Gate site would generate sufficient profits to minimise the expense of building the 40,000 seat stadium in the Docklands precinct. My argument would be not to build a new major stadium at Docklands – just upgrade Casey Fields: • use the E Gate site for additional residential development instead of a stadium o you would get to accommodate more of Melbourne’s 1 million population growth by 2026 in a development close to central Melbourne o you would generate more development profits than turning over a large part of the site to a stadium • use $50 million of the profits to develop Casey Fields as a Carrara/York Park/Manuka equivalent standard site to accommodate 20-25,000 people seated in basic stands. Benefits: • you would save a lot of money • you’d get a venue in the suburbs instead of concentrating everything in the inner suburbs • you wouldn’t be over-capitalising on a venue when all the AFL needs to look at is a venue to cope with small crowds involving interstate teams v lower drawing Melbourne teams.
  18. Wasn't it Alex Rance from Richmond (#18)?
  19. $10 for adults. MFC members for free on production of membership card.
  20. Access by car to Casey Fields is best undertaken via the Monash Freeway to Berwick-Cranbourne Road (adjacent to the Monash University). It is a little counter-intuitive, but it is the fastest way. Here are some directions: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sou...606995&z=11
  21. I grew up near Sandy, so I used to support the local team - the Zebs. I moved away 30 years ago, but still kept an interest in Sandy. I barrack for the Saints, so once St KFC aligned with the Scorps, I barracked for Springvale. When the Scorps moved to Casey, I thought it was fantastic - my aligned VFL team in my local area. Then (for a brief while) there was even the prospect of St KFC moving to Casey Fields and it was too good to be true. It was (too good to be true). When St KFC broke the alignment with the Scorps to run with Sandy, I kept my allegiance to my local VFL team. With the MFC alignment, I'm now also taking a keen interest in Melbourne. MFC is now my second team because of the alignment. Because MFC is having a training base at Casey, and getting so involved in the local community, I have bought a MFC membership as well and I'm going to Demons games (as well Saints & Scorps). I went to Sandy last weekend, and there was no doubting my support for the Scorps over Sandy - despite my particular interest in some of the opposition players. The upshot, in VFL terms, is: 1/ I barrack for my local VFL team - the Casey Scorpions 2/ I would support the VFL team my AFL club is aligned to (unless it is inconsistent with rule 1) 3/ Welcome to Casey all you MFC supporters.........we're happy to see you at Casey Fields.
  22. Robbo isn't fit enough yet for AFL, and Watts has never played at AFL or VFL level. Sure Watts was #1 draft pick, but he isn't even training fit - let alone match fit. There is no way that you'd put Watts into that environment. There is a huge difference between AFL and VFL match intensity - he need time in the VFL and he also needs to do intensive training with the team (and not just over a couple of weeks of the school holidays).
  23. "The teenager, who turned 18 two weeks ago, also plans to play at least a few games for Brighton Grammar and will meet with his school and club this week to map out the next part of his season." http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/rfnews/wa...9223105909.html
  24. He's listed as number 60 in the Scorpions team list (Casey players are numbered 1 to 45, then Melbourne players from 46 onwards)
  25. It's at Casey Fields @ 7:00pm under lights. Reserves are at 4:00 pm.
