12" singles were very common in the 1980s and usually featured an extended version of the song. The sound quality was superior to both the 7" single and 12" LP formats. They were usually 45rpm but occasionally one would be 33rpm which would make the record sound like it was The Chipmunks if you weren't paying attention to the label.
