Have any players coached by Matthews, Malthouse or Roos had to drop themselves like Yze did because the coach was just too soft to do it himself? I don't think so. Emblematic of his coaching reign. If Bailey is putting the hard words on our players then all i can say is that its about bloody time.

Are you a member of the Melbourne Football Club?

Member since Squadron days in mid 70s. Currently 1 x Redlegs and 1 x AFL. -
Yze Magic Trading Bruce would not have produced a first round pick. Thats why Johno was selected as the player to trade out of the likes of Bruce, Green, Yze and Johno. end of story.
-
Cale Morton - clearly our best player in his second game, his more experienced team mates should be embarassed. daylight Paul Johnson - well he is better than the insipid White Nathan Caroll - at least he is prepared to take hits for the team. and Harem Scarem with Even at the Corner on Saturday Night. Bailey should get Dr Christopher Marshall to give the pre match address. Time for Bailey to do what Daniher never did - react to consecutive drubbings by dropping some senior players. White, Green, Bruce, Wheatley....
-
Hey, I turned on White first. The centre circle neutered his leaping advantage at centre bounces, he has never been a good mark because he has hard hands ,just doesn't run to the right positions for a ruckman and he has no physical presence. Any midfielder/utility can be on the end of the switch of play but the 195cm ruck should be the guy 60 metres up the ground demanding the ball or the guy taking the saving mark on the goal line. That has never been, and never will be Jeff White. No other team plays a 195cm ruckman. Who would have thought 10 years ago that one of the pioneering mobile ruckman would become a dinosaur himself. Play PJ as Nm 1 Ruck and challenge Jamar/Meesen to be the Nm 2.

Well 1 - Moloney was still on the ground in the second half and started to get some of the ball 2 - Morton showed some courage 3 - Weetra did a few nice things 4 - Newton showed again that is a viable forward target 5 - Buckley showed a bit 6 - PJ showed a bit and always chased hard when it was his turn that'd be it hopefully Bailey will respond to insipid performances by senior players by dropping them rather than Daniher who just kept on playing em

Ins (for starters) - Rivers, Bartram, Sylvia, Dunn Outs - Morton: what a tough game to make his debut. Showed courage but back to Sandy then back in when the team is playing better. Wheatley: does he have a future or has the increased pace of the game caught him out? Robertson: was never quick but is now slow, goes to ground too often, was a good player and a favourite but another the game has passed by. Yze: was stunned when he was selected for round 1. Can play out his career with Sandy. Another player the game has passed by. Other comments White can go too. If Bruce and Green play they should be half forwards. They really are not much better than Jack Dyer good ordinary footballers. Actually it was such an embarasing performance they can be dropped too. Time to shake things up. No point in dropping likes of Petterd, Maclean, Weetra etc when there are so many more senior players who put in absolute shockers. team v bullies Bartram Carroll Frawley Petterd Rivers Bell Dunn Maclean Buckley Sylvia Miller Moloney Neitz Newton Davey Johnson, Jones. McDonald Jamar/Meesen, Weetra, Garland, Bode Ah now that feels better.

Bruce was extraordinarily ordinary today. Like most of our 150 game plus senior players - White, Green, Yze, Robertson to name a few - he is the cream not the cake. When the team is playing well they play well. When the team is struggling they have zero impact. For years Neitz was the one who could get us back into the game but he is past his best now. Macca also gets an honourable exemption. God I hope the next generation gives us some champions.
-
Freo were very very ordinary. Tarrant was absolutely hopeless. Can't believe they traded pick 8 - which the Magguires used on Ben Reid - for him. He is one overpriced underperforming half forward flanker. They are slow, their ball use and decision making is very ordinary. the number of times they fluffed simple short passes or handballs or managed to run themselves into trouble was amazing. At least the Wiz played ok. He provided Pavlich with the only decent pass to him for the whole game. In fact looking at the Freo list and watching the game today you gotta hope that Connolly's trip back over the Nullarbor saw some sort of Saulian road to Damascus conversion vis a vis and re list management. There is not much young talent comng through and they have a lot of Jack Dyer good ordinary footballers -- and they have done more than a few questionable trades.

Geelong won the Grand Final last year by the record winning margn, we finished down the bottom and then pruned our list of Johno and more than a few experienced players in Bizzell, Brown, Ferg, Ward, to make way for an influx of young inexperienced talent. When you factor in that Geelong was far closer to their best 22 than us we were going to struggle. Positives Valenti - showed great potential as another ball magnet inside midfeilder McNamara - 190 and 84, the youngest player taken in the 2007 draft, athletic, looks to have a good footy brain, composure and good dispposal Martin (198 and 97) and Zomer (196 and 94) - both showed glimpses that they have a future which will help with our key position depth Garland - showed he had progressed since lat year, athletic and a good kick Negatives Some horrid disposal clangers Fxtel Camerawork!
-
Its simple. We are rebuilding after the ultimately unsuccessful 10 year Daniher era. Its logical that a few coaches/football department staff who were there for that era, which is now over, would decide to leave, and that some would be moved on.

Good luck to Craig Cameron at Richmond. Why do posters always have to look for some conspiracy theory, someone to blame when somebody leaves. Cameron has been with us for 11 years which is a long stint with the one employer these days. Maybe he just wanted a change and a new challenge. My immediate concern is with the recruiting network he has built up, will they stay with us or will he try and get some of them to work for Richmond. There are only 16 Recruiting Manager's jobs so I expect there will be a pool of talented people in the field to replace him.

I don't see why Cousins' would have to be convicted of a criminal offence to have brought the game into disrepute. For mine the fact that he is a drug addict and that he openly associates with drug dealers is enough. It is the right decison from the AFL and for him.

Adelaide Crows pushing hard for Jared Rivers
demoniac replied to Yze_Magic's topic in Melbourne Demons
Well they are both tall defenders I guess. However the former is a 23 year old good potentially great player the later a 26 year old fringe player. -
Travis is not the best footballer at the club. Certainly he has the most exquisite skills but in today's game that is not enough. His application has never, or rarely matched his talent - we have certainly not seen his best often enough. He turns 28 next year, we finished 3rd last and have an immature spine and ruck division so our Premiership window is probably going to open in 3 or 4 years by which time TJ will at the end of his career. The addition of Pick 14 gives us good flexibilty in the Top 20 and will hopefully produce a player who is in our 13th Premiership team.

Adelaide Crows pushing hard for Jared Rivers
demoniac replied to Yze_Magic's topic in Melbourne Demons
Definitely no deal. Rivers will be our quarterback. The combination of his ability to read the play, his good judgement on when to leave his man and be the third man up, and his overhead marking are rare indeed. I am quite happy at having Rivers and Pettard, who is shorter but has similar talents together in the backline because players with their skill set are very very hard to find. -
Green kicked those 4 goals as a leading medium forward. Thats still his best position despite Daniher playing him as a winger or sweeper. Chris Johnson is 21. He seems to have the the tools to be a good player - athletic, runs well, good build (188cm/87kgs), kicks long, but has not yet been able to put it together at AFL level. Keep him I say and see if Bailey can get him to fire.
-
Bolton turns 28 in 2008. 183cm, 84kgs. 187 games. Crash n Bash inside midfielder. Good at stoppages. Good tackler. Slow. Poor disposal. Form on the decline. No thanks. Hardly concurs with stated strategy of trading for picks and building around our 23 and under talent.

TRAVIS JOHNSTONE - WHY WHY WHY???
demoniac replied to Jonesy is the next captain's topic in Melbourne Demons
Johstone will be 28 in July next year. He has been on the senior list for 10 years. He has undoubted talent but we just don't see it consistently. It is impossible not to have major doubts about his professionalism in terms of his preparation. Do any of those who don't want to trade Travis think he has got anywhere near the best out of himself. When all this is taken in the context of our rebuild around our 23 and under talent he is tradeable because realistically he is unlikely to be a member of our 13th Premiership but may deliver us a Top 20 pick who may be. If Dean Bailey sets a standard where talented under achievers are not tolerated then that'll be fine by me. -
Jamar set to sign for 2 years....what a joke!!!
demoniac replied to 9. David Neitz's topic in Melbourne Demons
For mine Johnson is not a ruckman. More a Q Lynch forward type, tall, athletic, good skills, needs to work on marking. Should be kept. Which leaves us with a Ruck division of 3 if we get Meeson including the 31 year old White. Jamar is big and strong, gets his hands to alot of marking chances - needs to hold more and has decent skills. Once again I feel that having had Followers Stynes and White as our Number 1 ruck for 20 years we've become used to having tall midfielders as our Nm 1 Ruck. -
We haven't had a Nm 1 Ruckman since Strawbs O'Dwyer in the late 80s. Stynes and White are both Followers. We did get Dunn for Jolly but I would have preferred to trade White meself. Jolly and Simmo left because Daniher just did not believe in playing 2 rucks so they were only getting very modest game time. Johnson is very athletic and skilled for his height - needs to work on his overhead marking - shapes more as Q Lynch type forward than Ruck. Its hard to rate Rosa given he has played in an amazing midfield but he is certainly not a great kick. Even if we get Meeson for mine we still have to keep Jamar. As above Johnson is more forward than ruck so we do need at least 3 rucks on our list.

Do we want to make the finals or do we want to win a flag? It is possible that with a change of coach and a better run with injuries we could make the lower reaches of the 8 next year but the reality is that barring some 150th Birthday miracle we are not going to make a genuine run for a flag. So for mine we need to press the rebuild button. In terms of trading a player for a high pick TJ has the most currency of our older players - we should explore his trade worth with the aim of getting a Top 10 or Top 15 pick. He turns 28 next year and thus is unlikely to be part of our next Premership tilt. Use Pick 4 on Rance to add to our key position stocks so can develop with Newton, Rivers, Frawley, Garland, Dunn and Bate. We need to get to a point where our spine is a strength. That is step one of the rebuild for mine. The mmoted interest in Meeson is also a step in the right direction.

A friend of mine, a mad Carltoon fan, is taking trade week off! He will be providing a Trade Week Table email and SMS service for his friends who must unfortunately work during Trade Week!
-
Robbo is turning 29. Given we finished 14th this year and given our lack of strength and depth down the spine the reality is that he is unlikely to play in a Dees Premiership team. For mine the club is correct in offering him 2 years. Turning 29, a couple of injury prone years equals a 2 year offer. Its not as if we are short of medium foward options.. Bate, Green, Bruce all play their best footy forward. Dunn can also play as a mobile forward.

Maguire turned 23 in May, 190 and 98kg Rivers is 23 in October, 192cm and 90kg Maguire could hold down Centre Half Back - and play on gorillas - allowing Rivers to use his rare ability to read the play and his overhead marking to be the third man up and be our effective defensive quarterback. If it was a trade would not come cheap.
