Bob - that’s some assumption you make about Hogan or May being pick one if they were in this year’s draft. That might be the case if you were looking at players on ability alone but they are not 17/18 year olds with raw talent and there are other considerations involved such as their age and their history in the game. Hogan will be 24 years of age when he plays his first game with the Dockers and approaching the halfway mark in his career. There are his injuries and illnesses to consider, questions about his attitude and some of the personal issues he’s had to confront over the past six years. Those considerations need to be taken into account in assessing his worth and, in terms of the deal Melbourne got from Fremantle: there was also his contract status that meant our hold on him would have been even weaker this time next year. In the end therefore, I believe that we probably got a fair market value given his determination to go to a state where there are only two teams and the other one is fairly well off for key players and didn’t have the salary cap room. May is three years older than Hogan and while he has shown out as a leader with the Suns, I don’t believe he would go anywhere close to being a #1 in this draft. That said, I have reasonably high expectations of him but we were forced due to the situation to pay a little more for him than we would have liked. We did get our man and it remains to be seen whether we get value from the trade. Let’s hear what JM has to say.

He's had 4 knee reco's and had groin issues this year. You have to admire his persistence and in earlier days, he went well as a dangerous forward in a good team but those days are over and to fit into the Goodwin style you need to be strong, hard working and have physical presence. So, it's a no from me.

The big question is where is Mr. Leg at what should be his moment of triumph? My information is that he has, as Ernest implied, hit the wall and fled the jurisdiction; that he is on a vessel travelling the high seas with a rod in his hand in true Hemingway fashion. I have just read this piece and it truly resonates with me on several levels. Although, the wisdom of Steven May’s recruitment will ultimately be determined by what he achieves on and off the field for the club in the future, his story puts paid to any debate about who wins in trading. If it’s all about what a club gains and adds to its community then we have added a wonderful asset to the Melbourne Football Club for the next five years.

It shows that Collingwood and Essendon have sacrificed next year’s first round picks in much the same way as Melbourne did last year to get Jake Lever. If those teams perform well in 2019 then losing those picks won’t be a complete disaster. I think the Hawks have used their future picks well to secure their current needs. GWS are well set up for next year despite their salary dumping this year. FWIW, Melbourne might have a first round pick this year.

Good point and I am sympathetic with bananas and everything they stand for. Not only that but one of my favourite movies is Bananas with Woody Allan. However, since we have a dedicated cheese thread over on the other board, there’s no reason why you couldn’t have a designated bananas thread and I’ve never been completely comfortable with the linkage of bananas, the unmentionable and BS. No trolling and only raised it as a subject for debate given that throughout the lifetime of this thread GWS and the unmentionable (who I’ve now mentioned twice in this post) have been inextricably linked and now that the nexus has been broken you might want to take advantage of the situation. And, as Hemmingway has, as always, eloquently put it, the place has hit the wall and a rest is much needed.

This is the area where there is some uncertainty. I understand that T Smith and Keilty have been given another year on the rookie list so the only question mark is whether Maynard gets the upgrade. Unless the rules have changed, we could go with a primary list of 38 and take more rookies (Category A) to give us total numbers of 44 plus the Category B rookies.
