I think Gaff’s defence made a mistake arguing provocation as part of its case. Much better had he thrown himself on the mercy of the Tribunal.

Casey Demons v Northern Blues - Round 18
Whispering_Jack replied to KC from Casey's topic in Melbourne Demons
There's a definite concern for both the MFC and Casey with regard to the ruck situation. At AFL level, we've been extremely fortunate to have had Max available for every game but we would have to rely on make shift ruckmen again if he were injured - by that I mean Tommy Mac, the Weid and Pedo. Our two ruckmen at Casey have been getting thrashed on an almost weekly basis in an albeit otherwise strong team. Now Mitch King is injured and the reports from the game don't sound promising while Filipovic appears not to be up to it. It might be time for the club to drag someone out of the country or metropolitan ranks and play them - wasn't there talk of the club recruiting some giant from nowhere earlier in the season? That's the short term situation - longer term, we have cat b rookie Austin Bradtke coming on board for next year but I suspect the club will be on the lookout at the drafts or trades for a capable stand in ruckman should he ever be needed. -
SEN is running a fundraiser for our great fellow Demon Jarrod Lyle. Please give - 1300081116 Hopefully, Jarrod was buoyed by the team yesterday and the boys can keep doing it for him and his family.

Casey Demons v Northern Blues - Round 18

Some good figures for the Casey boys. Cory Wagner and Jay Lockwood have been consistent and on the improve - will figure in draft considerations later in the year. -
If there's a single lesson to be learned from this round so far, it's that you should never rely on the results of other games. You have to get the job done yourself.

No streaming today but you can follow the game on Casey Radio. -
Rest easy. There is no way possible that Melbourne can lose today. We don’t even play until tomorrow.

It seems to me that the outcome of last night’s game really does demonstrate how close Melbourne is to becoming one of the powers of the competition. A fortnight ago, on Geelong’s turf, we lost by 2 points in a game that took an incredible last quarter comeback effort from the home side to beat us. The Cats scored 8.0 to 3.5 in that term, finished with an incredible 16.4.100 (80% shooting accuracy for the game) and needed everything to go right for them in the dying moments to get up (including our AA ruckman to miss two important patches off the ground when Geelong scored heavily) - yes, we obviously contributed by failing to apply enough pressure on their forwards when they were rampant but there were so many little fine lines that contributed to our downfall. Fast forward to last night where the premiership favourite was the home team and the game flowed in much the same way. This time however, those little fine lines were moved somewhat. Geelong had seven shots to four and still kicked accurately but their 5.2 for the final quarter represents a 71.4% goal scoring ratio and their game score came up at 54.5% - well below the 80% they managed against us. The end result was that, against the same opposition, the Tigers won at home by 3 points while we lost away by 2 points. That tells me we’re not so far off the pace. Of course, every game is different and we appear doomed to rue the result of that game, but it tells me that on our day, we are now capable of beating anyone in the competition, which gives us plenty to look forward to in the future (naturally, at the moment, I’m looking forward only to tomorrow).

The Tigers game will be the benchmark for me. We need them to beat Geelong and if they do then I will know the stars are aligned in our favour. If not ... I will not be very happy.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - GUY WALKER
Whispering_Jack replied to whatwhat say what's topic in Melbourne Demons
There used to be a time when there were a number of cricketers who doubled up playing football in the winter eg. Peter Bedford, Neil Crompton (who kicked the winning goal in our last premiership and played for Victoria) and Max "Tangles" Walker. Doesn't happen these days. -

Casey Demons v Northern Blues - Round 18
Whispering_Jack replied to KC from Casey's topic in Melbourne Demons
Four reasonably straightforward players off that list because they will represent the MFC against Gold Coast Suns - J Smith, ANB, Spargo and Petracca with one other as the player held back as emergency. -
Not everyone is cut out for the ruthless grind of sport at its elite level. Harley Balic was a promising youngster at the Dragons and he made a great start at the club with six goals in Round 1 at Casey. It was not to be but good luck to him in the future.
-
This is exactly the reason why we have a "mystery injury of the week" on Demonland.
-
The main outs this time around would be Jake Lever and Michael Hibberd while Jack Viney was on the cusp of coming back. If we can get Hibberd and Viney back into the side for the big run home, it would be very helpful.
