  1. Club has issued vision of the heavens opening up over the ground. Apparently, 100.2mm of rain fell at the Gold Coast Seaway to 9am Sunday morning. This was the highest daily July rain for the station since 2005.
  2. Our chance to get back in town.
  3. Just watching Clarko’s presser and I’m stunned that he opened by saying he was pleased with his players’ endeavour. He emphasized it again a couple of minutes later. Sorry, but there were a few players in brown and gold who showed very little endeavour at all. Also had a go at the umpires. Poor form when you lose the way Hawthorn did today.
  4. Shoosh - I don’t want to give away the grand final result!
  5. Erm, well actually ... beating Collingwood twice in the same season is better and it also happened in 1964.
  6. The Demons winning run continued on this day in 1964 ... Round 14, 1964 Carlton vs Melbourne Saturday 25 July Venue: Princes Park Attendance: 17,831 B Crompton Massey Tas Johnson HB Anderson Roet Williams C Dixon H Mann Adams HF Vagg Groom Kenneally F Jacobs Bourke Emselle Foll Wise Barassi Rov Townsend 19/20 Davis Watson The Melbourne juggernaut continued its forward momentum against lowly Carlton but not without a scare. The Blues had first use of the breeze and led by seven points at the first break but the Demons came back well to lead by two goals at half time. The home side dominated the third quarter but their chances were marred by inaccuracy in front of goal and when the siren sounded for three quarter time it led by only seven points. Carlton’s hopes were raised when they kicked the first goal of the final term but with Bluey Adams and Brian Dixon taking control on the wings, Melbourne kicked five of the game’s last six goals to win by 12 points and all but cement a place in the finals for the eleventh year in a row. The Demons were a win clear of second placed Geelong on the ladder and held a huge percentage advantage over their nearest rivals. 7. No but if I would have kept on driving past places I’m not allowed to travel to these days, I might have crossed the Yarra and Maribyrnong RIVERS.
  8. I took my wife for a routine visit to her eye doctor yesterday and after I dropped her off, I parked the car, donned my mask and went for a half hour’s walk through the streets around Toorak Road. I was immediately reminded of the good old days when we used to go to the MCG to watch the Dees play their footy in the heart of Melbourne rather than 1,300 kilometres away to the north. There was a time back in those days when we would drive to games from the south eastern suburbs down Orrong Road, take a short cut into Robertson Street, dive into Grange Road and head down Bruce Street. Before we knew it, we were motoring past Como and if the traffic was light, would be looking for a parking spot around the G in no time. In the mid 2000s it was always a good omen for the afternoon ahead to drive down streets named after a couple of team favourites in Robbo and Cam Bruce. That pair have now long retired and more recently, we found it more convenient to travel to games by train until COVID19 but on yesterday’s walk through the streets of our most salubrious suburb, I discovered a new omen for the future - Jackson Street.
  9. I’m shocked. Totally shocked!!!
  10. I don’t have any problems with the fixture. This is a tough competition in a very rough year for everybody and we’re a side that will, in the long run, benefit from doing it hard. We’ve been lucky so far with injuries so it gives us an edge on our opponents. Let’s be positive about the challenges facing us for the rest of the year.
  11. Callum Twomey’s 25 best draft prospects. Tall, athletic and versatile: 25 of the best draft prospects ... and some news from WA. WA key forward enhances draft stocks, possible Freo pick blitzes Not sure if we necessarily would be interested in a 196cm key forward at this point in time or that we’ll have the picks necessary. The draft’s a mere four months away but that seems like light years the way things are going these days.
  12. So avb could be our first Mystery Injury of the Week for 2020!

Scratching my head as to why we're not in a hub location close to the Gold Coast given we're going to be playing at Metricon and perhaps the Gabba.

I saw reports over the weekend that the club will be based around the Southport Sharks and it appears that many of the players left behind and not included in the Sydney hub are already on the Gold Coast. Many years ago - when GC17 was in its preparatory stages they played a season in the VFL - my family and Redleg’s family were up on the Coast and we went to the Casey Scorpions v GC17 and managed to get an invite to the President’s lunch at the Sharks Club. It’s a great facility - the game was enjoyable and we chatted with the players, most notably Jack Watts for a good while after the game. The club is currently in a good space both physically in terms of the place where they’re staying, the facilities available, the health of the list and their form. Let’s hope, it keeps up.

  16. Don’t worry. We haven’t been 5 goals up at any stage this year. Against Carlton we led by 7.4.46 to 2.5.17 - that’s not 5 goals.
  17. What’s happened to the pressure metre graphic? I’ve watched every game this round and it’s been on all of them but this one.
  18. Hard to say this but Carlton have gone right past us as a football team since we towelled them up in the first quarter of round 2.
  19. This is Melbourne’s line in the sand day. A win would keep the season alive and become a building block for the next phase in this crazy season. Defeat puts us in stage 4 lockdown.
  20. Stefan Martin kicking goals. Brisbane is going to be very hard to beat next week.
  21. Most of the days of this week of mounting numbers of active COVID-19 cases have been sunny - a stark contract to the wet weather that hit Melbourne 56 years ago in the lead up to Round 13. Back then there was no lockdown and hundreds of thousands of Melburnians could still attend a game of football at the highest level or the suburban variety across the town. And more often than not, the Melbourne Football Club celebrated victory. Those were the days, my friend. Round 13, 1964 Melbourne vs North Melbourne Saturday 18 July Venue: MCG Attendance: 29,631 B Crompton Massey Tas Johnson HB Anderson Roet Williams C Dixon H Mann Watson HF Vagg Groom Kenneally F Jacobs Bourke Emselle Foll Wise Barassi Rov Townsend 19/20 Adams Davis Several days in a row of heavy rain were not enough to dampen the Demon spirit as Melbourne scored an emphatic 12 goal victory to record its ninth consecutive win. In doing so, it put North Melbourne out of the finals race. The scene was set for a dull, lacklustre first half which saw the Demons in front by only 12 points at the main break but a withering seven goal to nil third term saw them home safely. Future captain Frank Davis made his debut and goalled with his second kick but it would take until 1973 before he would kick another. At the end of the round the team sat comfortably at the top of the VFL ladder and had assumed the mantle of premiership favourite. 22. Did the camera crew get tested positive or something?
  23. Agreed, the closure of schools and the deferment and likely cancellation of junior community sport will have a devastating effect on both the physical and mental well-being of hundreds of thousands of children in the state. Many will be left with little to do in the abundant amount of spare time available but to play on line games and worse endlessly. It’s been a tough time on them and it doesn’t look like getting much better.
  24. And we knocked the Suns out of the 8.
  25. The natural tendency when a team wins is to keep the line up as stable as possible and not to make changes unless absolutely necessary. However, this is not a normal season and all teams are competing in unusual circumstances. The home and away season will be 17 matches if not interrupted by necessity in coping with the pandemic. Games are played with shortened quarters and many teams are situated in interstate hubs. There is no competition available or players outside each week’s 22 players. This is not a normal season and it’s being mooted that rounds will be compacted so that 4 or 5 day breaks will become common and we also have to remember that Melbourne has to make up an extra game. We’ve also had a slow start and are down 2-3 and with a poor percentage. We are therefore both under pressure to catch up to the pack in terms of ladder position and ensure that the team we put out onto the park is able to compete from week to week and maintain optimum performance and energy levels over the next 2½ to 3 months. I wouldn’t be surprised therefore if we do make some changes on a weekly basis simply to ensure that we can keep going and build up momentum even when injuries come or players get tired and need a rest. At this stage, we’re lucky in that we don’t have an injury list as deep as the one we had last year and, after all the disappointment so far we're effectively a game out of the eight with a game in hand and we've already played the last two season's premies in WCE and Richmond and the top team after the 23 rounds in Geelong.
