  1. So we don’t like Rohan and we’re not getting Martin. That’s a real laugh in (and unless you were around in the early 70s you simply won’t get this).
  2. I understand that the Lions are planning to only use two picks at the draft. Their third selection overall would be a rookie upgrade. Hence they don’t need pick 43 and will use 53 for that purpose. No brainer from their POV and a win for both clubs.
  3. Stunning trade done by the Demons ~ The Brisbane Lions trade Round 3 (43) and its Future Round 4 2021 Selection to Melbourne for its Round 3 (53) and a Future Round 3 2021 Selection. Brilliant (if only I could work out what it means. ?
  4. Actually, there were a few errors in the article eg. in 1966, John Beckwith wasn't Melbourne's coach - Norm Smith was reinstated after being sacked in 1965 (missed one game) and remained coach until the end of 1967. Beckwith replaced him in 1968. As to that opening game of 1971, it was a massive start to the season and I still can't work out how we missed out in the end. It was a fall from grace only matched by 1965 when we were 8-0 in the year after Barassi left to coach Carlton (I've always maintained that if Barassi had stayed at the club we would have easily made the finals in 1965).
  5. Agree - any future personal stuff will be deleted and other sanctions may also be applied. That applies anywhere on this site but on this thread ... please stick to the facts or fiction relating to rumours.
  6. Persistence is the story of John Gallus. He did it tough in his younger days and, as a teenager from Drouin, he fought to gain a clearance to Melbourne but when the opportunity finally came, he couldn’t break into the reigning premiership in 1965. He eventually crossed over to Waverley VFA in 1966 and then played in the country before he was finally tempted to try again in 1971 at the age of 25. He made his debut in the opening round and kicked three goals in the team’s massive win against South Melbourne. This is his story ~ Almanac Footy: John Gallus – The journey through football
  7. Jack Higgins seems to have been off the radar a little according to Tim Watson on SEN this morning: "What interests me most is why there aren't more clubs, and maybe there are, but why there are not more clubs that are really desperately keen to try and secure his services, like Melbourne." I saw him and an entourage of helpers training at a park near my place last summer and he was putting in a lot of hard yards to get fit after his brain surgery. It was quite an achievement for him to get back into senior footy when you have such a health scare. Question is whether it remains a concern for recruiters and whether someone’s willing to take a risk.
  8. Stef Martin bound for the Western Bulldogs.
  9. The second day of the trade period is an almost nothing day and, true to form, almost nothing happened. The biggest news of the day was that the only deal done was the trade of Kyle Hartigan from the Adelaide Crowd to Hawthorn for a future fourth round pick. In draft terms, that’s about the lowest level of currency you can get. That left the various commentators on AFL Trade Radio with plenty of time to discuss the futures of Jeremy Cameron, Josh Dunkley and Adam Treloar and some of lesser lights who are currently homeless, the sum total of such discussions amounting to almost nothing.
  10. Former Demon, Blair Campbell, who played 12 games and kicked 23 goals from a half forward flank in 1969 has passed away. Campbell, who joined the club from Richmond, was credited with inventing the banana kick. He played the one season for the club and retired after injuring his knee but went on to a long career in Shield Cricket as a crafty wrist spinner who was also a handy late order batsman. Condolences to the family.
  11. The Done Deals today - • West Coast acquires Zac Langdon in a trade. GWS receives the Eagles’ third-round pick • Gold Coast acquires Oleg Markov in a trade. Richmond receives the Suns’ 2021 third-round pick • GWS acquires Jesse Hogan in a trade. Fremantle receives the Eagles’ third-round pic
  12. The other constraint he’s still working under is the fact that the AFL has yet to announce list sizes for 2021, yet the trade period opens tomorrow. This must be particularly frustrating to the various club recruiters and might prolong the time taken to finalize deals. For a club like Collingwood, which is clearly facing difficulties with salary cap issues this situation would be a nightmare.

  16. It’s a public holiday and things have been a little quiet today but there’s a lot happening in the background. Essendon and Carlton remain in a stalemate over Adam Saad on the eve of the 2020 trade period. Matt Rendell believes Collingwood is exploring the possibility of bringing in Tom McDonald from Melbourne. Speculation that St Kilda might be calling Adelaide’s bluff (the Crows have yet to match the Saints’ bid). The action should heat up a little bit when the trade period starts tomorrow at 9.00am.
  17. There are a number of aspects of this story that are raising red flags in terms of the question of recruiting Adam Treloar - the financial aspect, his physical and mental wellbeing, his family situation and the atmosphere of intrigue surrounding the whole story which is sending out the message that there’s a lot more to this that meets the eye. So much about this just doesn’t add up and any club that’s not fully informed should steer clear. On top of all that, the situation unfolding at Collingwood with Treloar is turning into an unmitigated disaster for that club. No spin can hide the fact that the Pies have abandoned their war cry of “side by side we stick together” and they have to be concerned about their future, let alone about the precarious position they’ve placed their player in. And where is the AFLPA in all of this?

  19. Nominated the Saints so this thread heads off to our main board.
  20. Daily summary ~ Matt Rendell says the Bombers need to pay up for Josh Dunkley. “When you're chasing a bloke that has two years left on their contract, then cough up. Don't stuff around! Cough up" "Ben Brown has chosen Melbourne. The Dees have met with him, done a medical, and he will request the trade" - Sam Edmund Jesse Hogan has officially requested a trade to the Giants. The Dockers will clear him. Geelong a little surprised the Giants matched the Jeremy Cameron offer. The Treloar saga continues. Nathan Buckley responded to Sam Edmund's report that the coach informed Adam Treloar senior players don't want him to return to the club. St Kilda say they won't be trading their first-round pick in any potential trade for Brad Crouch.
  21. Was he banned from Twitter because of that thing way past in his history or something more recent? Asking for a friend.
  22. The highlight of the return game was Demon Graham Gaunt kicking the ball the wrong way which resulted in a Footscray goal. It was the turning point of the game and caused one supporter to blow up in an abusive tired directed at Barassi in the coaches box. High drama.
  23. Naturally - once you decide on a player, it’s all a negotiation.
  24. Is there any indication from a reputable source suggesting we have an interest in Phillips at this stage of the game?
