  1. The midfield looked far better when Viney was out of the side. Also reckon we looked a lot more balanced in that game against Gold Coast last year when both Oliver and Petracca weren't playing. Basically we can't play all three in the midfield, and we are wasting guys like Windsor and Langford by prioritising the old guard. I think Goodwin should really drop one of Viney or Oliver but highly doubt he does.
  2. West coast are a mess and that job was a poisoned chalice. You're basically agreeing to 5 years of pain before likely being sacked when all the hard work is done. There are plenty of good assistants around. One we should certainly look at is Brisbane's midfield coach Cameron Bruce.
  3. I don't think we should trade Petracca specifically. But I do think we need to seriously look at our list and how we're going to actually mount our next flag tilt. Don't think we can rely on Trac, Oliver and Viney to be the ones kicking the ball inside 50 any more. Gotta find a way to start giving the younger players more responsibility. Definitely need to make some hard list decisions with some senior players at years end.
  4. Not sure about decent form, he's been well down this year. A 30 year old down on form with a massive tail on his contract? We won't get much imo.
  5. I'm sort of confused by this reasoning. If the forwards don't trust the mids and the mids don't know how to kick it to the forwards then it speaks to a complete systemic disfunction on the field and essentially players going into self-preservation mode. We don't make excuses like that in other areas of the ground. Going against the team rules with regards to positioning or decision making is the kind of thing that gets players dragged or dropped.
  6. This is it. The club admitted we underperformed last year. Reaffirmed finals as the expectation and argued that the changes we made would take us there. We are now more than half way through the year and sit at 5-9. The chances of us catching fire on the run home seem miniscule right now. So does the club say they missed the mark with their expectations? Or do they admit that we have failed to get the most out of ourselves?
  7. He had to have an HIA that took him off the ground when he was on fire. If he was staging it backfired anyway. Brereton is just a complete moron.
  8. Petracca is definitely (and understandably) more worried about contact than he used to be. I've noticed him pull out of a number of contests this year, his injury is still in his mind. Completely understandable but it does make him a lesser player unfortunately.
  9. Who are you talking about? We have drafted midfielders and half backs and traded in players who couldn't get a game at their previous clubs. The only real forward we have brought in is an injury prone McAdam who was never that great to begin with.
  10. What's your point? That changing coaches must be always successful to be worth it? All you need to do is ask whether our team should be performing better than they are, if not why not? In my view many of our issues are system based. Issues that have been present for a while and that Goodwin has not been able to fix. Therefore, changing coach is the correct call. On your list management point. Teams make list changes every single year. But a senior coach has a major say in their vision for the list. So Goodwin has had a massive say in our list build.
  11. Are you basing this on expected score? With the exception of the Giants game that argument only works if our opponents also don't kick above average in those games. Too much being left too small margins either way.
  12. Goodwin has always relied on weight of numbers to generate score. It's all about getting the ball as deep as possible creating a contest and defending the exits. Lock the ball inside the forward half and keep pumping it in. Eventually a shot at goal will materialise. That is how he believes we should play and basically always has. He hates turnovers and intercept marks, so leading forwards aren't worth it. Crowd up the forwardline, make a contest and bring it to ground. A ball up or a throw in is a win for Goodwin. Anyone who thinks we are actually trying to change the way we enter our forward 50 is kidding themselves. It's more of the same and we will continue to play this way until he's gone.
  13. Plenty of good examples. Craig Macrae took Collingwood from second last to a prelim and a flag the following year. Luke Beveridge took the Dogs from bottom 6 to finals in his first year and a flag the following year. Ken Hinkley took Port from a bottom four side to finals in his first year and a Prelim the year after. Adam Simpson took West Coast from 13th to 9th and then a Grand Final in the following year. Coaches aren't everything but they're a pretty important piece of the puzzle.
  14. Maybe it is wasted but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy for us to secure. So far the MRC have not really been particularly enthusiastic towards the project and as a major stakeholder in the area that makes things more difficult to navigate. The fact that we're having to work out a new spot to put our training facility because the first choice was disrupted by the Mt Scopus sale is not encouraging.
  15. We're trying to build a training ground in the middle of a horse racing track. Of course it's contentious.
  16. Caufield has certainly not been in the works for a decade. Every chance the project gets undone by NIMBYs unfortunately. That's the risk we've taken by trying to build this in such a contentious space.
  17. Their system just looked much better.
  18. It's an area of the ground we have never really shown any respect to or tried to fix. List management and coaches both to blame.
  19. Gawn, Petracca and Fritsch have all seemed to have gotten significantly worse. Not that Gawn and Trac were ever great but they'd generally be a 50/50 chance. This year they seem closer to 70/30. Fritsch used to never miss now he misses about half the time he goes for goal. These three probably get between 5-10 shots between them every week.
  20. We'd be lucky to get a second rounder back tbh. Think we might just have to cut our losses at this point even if we have to pay some of his contract. We had an opportunity to get a first rounder back the past couple of years but we stuck fat. It will hurt a little but not as much as persisting with the same tired old formula. The team needs to move on and think about our long term future.
  21. It's not all or nothing. But we need to start transitioning into the next era.
  22. I know he won't and I'd keep him as he is a leader and we have very few of those. Would move on Oliver ahead of Petracca. Petracca has a higher ceiling and if all else fails can play as a forward. Oliver and Viney do the same thing.
  23. I don't think Goodwin would see it as a promotion. Only way it could work is if Goodwin put his hand up and said he needed to get out of the coaches box. If we asked him to do it I think he'd be insulted. Imo a new coach would need clear air and having the old coach hanging around wouldn't do them any favours.
  24. Has this ever happened? I think it would be a disaster. We'd be better off paying him to sit at home than have his spectre hanging around the club while the new coach is trying to make his mark. Goodwin absolutely wants to be coach, demoting him and giving his job to someone else would be culturally toxic imo.
  25. It's no surprise that our midfield balance looked off again with Viney coming back in the side. We really need to make a hard call and trade out one of him, Oliver or Trac and get some better ball users in there.
