No doubt, but I don't think ND60 is the place to pick kids. I reckon it is a great place to pick a 22 year old from the state leagues on a one year deal. If you pick a teenager at ND60 - automatic 2 year deal - so that is a side argument but still relevant. So I would agree with a one year deal for Davis over a teenager at ND60, but I think we have seen enough to make a judgement.

Yes, only one other poster has mentioned this I think. My ears did the same. Either contract issues, his ego in relation to PR, or the presence of his family is holding up the announcement.
-
I love it when we delve into a semantic argument... My term, I have defined after a roundabout request for context and I stand by it. Objections noted and logged. Move on.
-
That may be, in fact I am sure it is. But it doesn't lessen the fact that equating the contract situations of Watts and Hogan is misleading. One is out of contract at the end of next month, the other - the end of next month two years from now. There is no harm in context, unless you are trying to make a point that context will harm.

Waiting for the Bluey.

Yeah, your analysis sort of hit a hollow point when you just refuse to take relaity into account with this post: Who would think that? After all that has been rumoured, mooted, and said aloud, that he isn't interested in the job? You could say that if you were on Lions-land - the Brisbane supporter website, but not the MFC. If he had no interest then he could have stuck to his tried and trusted "don't feel like it yet" and then go and become WCE's coach... And I don't think you are slow, but I do think that you are using extreme language to get the attention of posters. Congratulations...

Ok, this is where I point out the misnomer of depth; Davis could not get near replacing Frawley. If we are worried about losing James then spend ND18 on a yong, tall defender. Davis would just be 'a body' from what I have seen and you can draft 'a body' from the VFL with Pick 60 of the Rookie Draft. I know that Viney and co. have therir 'four pillars' that touch on character, performance, etc but my own rule now is; you don't get on the list unless you can do something elite right now. Speed, marking, endurance, skills, hardness, clearances, etc - bring something to the table right now that could allow you to play a role at AFL level while developing as a player. And that way depth is created from the fact that all players on the list can contribute something right away.

Hogan is as contracted as Fitzpatrick who re-signed last week - he's signed till the end of 2015.

I just know from my research on the Uncontested Possessions vs the Margin that the aver margin was reduced by 31% in Craig's 11 games and the average differential in UPs by 50% - which is just a massive improvement. Basically went from averaging 182 UPs to 202 UPs while our opposition went from averaging 258 UPs to 238 UPs. And Craig is lauded for doing things at other clubs because he is a proven coach. He also doesn't run the bus over Mark Neeld because he is a good bloke.

Because they are important players for our flag tilt? And now it clicks...
-
Ok, I will make it easier: Frawley asks to leave. Hogan requests a trade to WA. That visceral pain in your gut you just felt? That's the difference I am talking about, that's what would have been on the cards if we had made another terrible decision with an untried coach.

I put this in the Roos thread but I will put it here in the off-chance someone with connections reads this: DO NOT ANNOUNCE ROOS AT THE BLUEY, AND CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE HIM THERE. What a cringeworthy experience that would be to unveil a new era - at the celebration of the end of the old one... The masses will sign the song for the promise of what may come in the future. He will make a speech promising the same things we are always promised. A standing ovation simply for agreeing to wear the match day jacket (reasonably priced at the Demon shop...). Don't do it. Please.

I made the point about being 'blighted' ages ago, but I can't determine his motivation and neither can you. Frankly, any coach of his calibre should take convincing to take on this club. We have a rookie President, a AFL-parachuted short term CEO (who is very good btw), zero FD bar Viney and Taylor and maybe Craig, and no midfield save for Jones and Viney. The fact that he is coming around now also doesn't mean he is 'coming around now.' I heard whispers a month ago that we were contacting Assistant coaches about being assistant coaches and I thought it was stupid, or we thought Roos was a chance (which I also thought was stupid). But here we are and the unthinkable is running through our heads. I think he has already committed, but he just hasn't signed yet...
-
Arguing something different? I started the argument... We are a terrible team and have been for a few years now. Losing players that hurt would have to be losing those of great value for nothing or those of value when we are good in a few years (exceptions made for excellent leaders like McDonald). They just will not be missed in 2 years time when I hope we are looking at a winning season. Losing Moloney and Rivers for 2013 made us worse, but they don't hurt. They didn't then and they don't now.
-
Good thread that.

As anxious as I am about this I know he will sign - this 'charade' just seems to me to be more about Roos' desire to use whatever (probably legitimate sticking point he has) to push the decision out and make it look like he didn't just 'do a Hird' and lie about not wanting to coach for a year then have a presser out of nowhere. And I also think he wants to avoid the Bluey. I would too, in fact, if I was Jackson I would not announce anything. Have whispers to all the tables but don't have a 'reveal.' It would be cringeworthy as the masses act as if we won the flag and start singing the song as Roos stands there awkwardly and makes a speech about getting better next year with a quarter of the players in the room knowing they won't be there. (Shudder)

Couch and Magner are rookies and Bail is contracted. If by the second Tynan you mean Taggert you are creating 8 spots. More than enough but a bit harsh on Tynan and Taggert...
-
Just for future reference - that wasn't funny.

Slow or looking for attention?
-
I am delusional? I am talking about hurt here - pain? Put Moloney, Rivers, and Petterd into our side and we will lose to people by 2 goals less than we would have and did. Again, those three into our 2013 side = our 2012 side. And they only have a few years left. This isn't defence of Neeld if some are going on the tangent of thinking that - I am simply saying that the loss of these three players, plus Morton, Gysberts, Martin, and Bennell, did not hurt the long term, or medium term outlook for the playing list.
-
Mike did that a few times, but I felt it was just as a MFC supporter who, like the rest of us, was muttering under our breath at every sidestep - "you're kidding me, right?" What he said about the Bluey has some merit - and would make him look silly if he turned around and did a massive Liberace on Thursday. I don't think this is done until next week.
-
2012 was 2013 with Moloney and Rivers. We sucked then and we suck now and they have a few years left. Frawley leaving would hurt, Jones leaving, Hogan, etc. I have attachments to older players if they are selfless leaders while still contributing onfield. I refuse to believe that this season would have been anything other than a disaster if we still had these players. Our future is not diminished by their exit. Their loss didn't hurt.

I think we are going to get draft assistance but the AFL care, far more than they should, on perception with decisions like these. I don't care about what the other clubs say but you can be assured that the AFL wants to be able to frame this well in the media.

Or a thread. As in this one. Dictionary excerpt a few pages back...

Playing the media, Jesus H Christ. He is killing me here. He's done, he's coming. Unless something happens, and his poor wife will be blamed...
