  1. I made the point about being 'blighted' ages ago, but I can't determine his motivation and neither can you. Frankly, any coach of his calibre should take convincing to take on this club. We have a rookie President, a AFL-parachuted short term CEO (who is very good btw), zero FD bar Viney and Taylor and maybe Craig, and no midfield save for Jones and Viney. The fact that he is coming around now also doesn't mean he is 'coming around now.' I heard whispers a month ago that we were contacting Assistant coaches about being assistant coaches and I thought it was stupid, or we thought Roos was a chance (which I also thought was stupid). But here we are and the unthinkable is running through our heads. I think he has already committed, but he just hasn't signed yet...
  2. Arguing something different? I started the argument... We are a terrible team and have been for a few years now. Losing players that hurt would have to be losing those of great value for nothing or those of value when we are good in a few years (exceptions made for excellent leaders like McDonald). They just will not be missed in 2 years time when I hope we are looking at a winning season. Losing Moloney and Rivers for 2013 made us worse, but they don't hurt. They didn't then and they don't now.
  3. As anxious as I am about this I know he will sign - this 'charade' just seems to me to be more about Roos' desire to use whatever (probably legitimate sticking point he has) to push the decision out and make it look like he didn't just 'do a Hird' and lie about not wanting to coach for a year then have a presser out of nowhere. And I also think he wants to avoid the Bluey. I would too, in fact, if I was Jackson I would not announce anything. Have whispers to all the tables but don't have a 'reveal.' It would be cringeworthy as the masses act as if we won the flag and start singing the song as Roos stands there awkwardly and makes a speech about getting better next year with a quarter of the players in the room knowing they won't be there. (Shudder)
  4. Couch and Magner are rookies and Bail is contracted. If by the second Tynan you mean Taggert you are creating 8 spots. More than enough but a bit harsh on Tynan and Taggert...
  5. Just for future reference - that wasn't funny.
  6. I am delusional? I am talking about hurt here - pain? Put Moloney, Rivers, and Petterd into our side and we will lose to people by 2 goals less than we would have and did. Again, those three into our 2013 side = our 2012 side. And they only have a few years left. This isn't defence of Neeld if some are going on the tangent of thinking that - I am simply saying that the loss of these three players, plus Morton, Gysberts, Martin, and Bennell, did not hurt the long term, or medium term outlook for the playing list.
  7. Mike did that a few times, but I felt it was just as a MFC supporter who, like the rest of us, was muttering under our breath at every sidestep - "you're kidding me, right?" What he said about the Bluey has some merit - and would make him look silly if he turned around and did a massive Liberace on Thursday. I don't think this is done until next week.
  8. 2012 was 2013 with Moloney and Rivers. We sucked then and we suck now and they have a few years left. Frawley leaving would hurt, Jones leaving, Hogan, etc. I have attachments to older players if they are selfless leaders while still contributing onfield. I refuse to believe that this season would have been anything other than a disaster if we still had these players. Our future is not diminished by their exit. Their loss didn't hurt.
  9. I think we are going to get draft assistance but the AFL care, far more than they should, on perception with decisions like these. I don't care about what the other clubs say but you can be assured that the AFL wants to be able to frame this well in the media.
  10. Or a thread. As in this one. Dictionary excerpt a few pages back...
  11. Playing the media, Jesus H Christ. He is killing me here. He's done, he's coming. Unless something happens, and his poor wife will be blamed...
  12. I do expect leadership positions to be re-won every year and 2014 should be no exception. And Jones would be hard to look past as captain. But that is up to the FD and the players.
  13. Early on in his career, and I won't damn him for it, he did similar things to Watts. He would short step to avoid a contest, he would give the ball up to avoid a tackle, etc I don't have evidence other than my own opinion and recollection. Green then changed my opinion in the latter half of his career where he became utterly careless of his own safety on the field. I see it every year in my own footy team; blokes can build the confidence in their body to show a bit more carelessness for their body.
  14. The point was that the loss hasn't hurt the club, and I say that with the context that we have far more important players to keep in the next few years while we rebuild again.
  15. Wouldn't be the first Demon to do that this year...
  16. Which of those hurt? Our performances were already rubbish. Our culture was already rubbish. Moloney and Rivers will be done in a couple years, and Petterd a HBF with a dodgy kick. None hurt.
  17. None of those hurt though. The hurt was to come but hopefully has been halted.
  18. I am sure that Roos would prefer that Craig move on but this should be handled with Craig given time to collect his thoughts, talking to some clubs and moving at his own pace. In no way shape or form should he be told he isn't wanted. He can see the writing on the wall, and he can find the door himself. Thanks for the honesty and for a much better 11 games than the first 11 games.
  19. Yes, I don't think people realise how much money is lost/generated with a change in members/change in attendance of that magnitude. The issue with his salary is purely a superficial one concerning the AFL's help covering the immediate payout of Neeld and Schwab, and the sense of unfairness that we are attracting a coach of Roos' calibre with a figure similar to the AFL's payout. But I think that is a specious argument from people who don't like the fact that welfare recipients are suddenly seeking things outside of what we 'deserve.'
  20. Yes, we have spent the last 3 months making Craig out to be some sort of pub coach. Imagine what we could do to Roos given the inclination. And I am certain there will be nervous nellies next year that will see us still losing and blame Roos and wonder why we paid for a coach that has 'lost it' and should have 'stayed on the couch.' But in the end, he is one the best coaches of recent times and will allow us to fix our culture and have some confidence - both on and off the field.
  21. Yes, well done to scarlett and to all. I probably should have won the LAST 8 games of the season rather than the FIRST, but you live - you learn.
  22. That's a costly coffee - he is contracted for $400k+ next year. The exit I envision for Craig is one of his own volition.
  23. I am sure he is about to sign, but you don't talk like this to journos if you already have. All these assistants we are lining up would hear it and think 'what are they doing?' I don't think he has signed a contract yet and that is what we are telling these prospective assistant coaches. Once he signs on the dotted line then we sign up everyone else. I know he is playing the media here, but I don't think he has anything more than intentions at this stage.
