Watts was hardly a failure. Would have played 200 games if not for breaking his leg. He was a lot better than some other no 1 picks.

He & Nic Nat were universally predicted to go 1 & 2 that year.

JT doesn't have a habit of drafting players universally selected in phantom drafts.

  3. Watts and Gysberts were both early picks and failed, both went on to other clubs and didn't succeed their either. Says to me it wasn't our development that was lacking. Our recruiting didn't recognise competitiveness like they do now.

I doubt JT would have taken either of them.

Google up 'Vaccination rates Worldwide' for all the info Wrecker

You'll get a graph with drop-down facilities and below the graph is an 'About this data' icon that has further explanation

I'm guessing the cases pertain to 12 years and over but it might be 16 years and over.  Seen as more of an overview much like wiki provides

It doesn't say what age bracket per country, just the percentage vacinated, which is meaningless on its own.

So the UK & Germany have about 70% of their population double vaccinated yet both countries are still reporting in excess of 40,000 covid cases per day.  70% is nowhere near enough people vaccinated

South Africa on the other hand has only 24% double vaxxed which means 45 million out of 59 million aren't vaccinated

We are basically dealing with an unvaccinated country so whether it's Delta or Omicron, we could expect a big increase in covid numbers in South Africa.  Their latest 7 day average is sitting at 4786 cases per day

For more info go to google and type in ...

'Covid cases in (insert country) today'

A graph will appear with a drop down facility to change the country of origin

When you talk about percentage of population vacinated is it within a certain age group or does it vary from country to country?

    Totally agree.

And there is no doubting Coatsworth's qualifications, experience and expertise. He knows his stuff.

Beware was probably the wrong word.

Aware of a possible agenda would have been a better way of phrasing it.

For what it's worth, i think Coatsworth has helped create some really interesting discussion through the pandemic - in particular about the pros and cons of the so called covid zero approach and the best approach with children. The other thing he was strong on was pushing back on the critique of Astra Zeneca, and as it turned out, rightly warning of the impact on take up and vax rates.

On these points Dr Nick has very clear opinions and has argued strongly, and not unpersuasively, for them.

But this is what I mean by being aware of a possible agenda - his comments in the media often, seems to be focused on advancing his arguments and position.

Which is fine - but personally i think it is an important filter to apply to his comments.

In this context, when i read his commentary, i also note he is an opinion writer for the Fairfax news group, and i presume (but don't know for sure) is paid for comment.

This, Fairfax, article, gives a good summary of Coatsworth's position on key Covid policies - and some of the critique he has received.

To be clear, i reckon it is important to be mindful of possible agendas of all experts regularly making comments about covid (or any public policy for that matter) in the media, particularly those that are likely being paid for comment.  Catherine Bennet is a good example.

@binman the biggest payee over covid seems to be pfizer. They now have booster shots and antibodies under clinical trials that seem to get rushed through. They are making lots of money over this pandemic.

When asked for evidence of their effacy it's not so rushed, they need to take their time.

I'm double vaxxed with Pfizer in retrospect I should have got AZ. You only need to look at the death rates in Europe to see why. Britain who gave AZ to over 65's and the rest of Europe who didn't (I'm not over 65)

I'll just drop this Red Herring in here that has nothing to do with the point being discussed.

1 - red herring doesn't need to be capitalised

2 - my post was not a red herring by any definition

3 - if you don't understand that Covid and Influenza are both contagious respiratory illnesse's you shouldn't contribute to this topic

4 - try and stick to the topics being discussed rather than trying to drop a red herring

  8. I'm double vaxxed was probably first in line for my age bracket because dees were top of the ladder. My precautions were more about missing a premiership than getting covid.

HIV has about 30 mutations but they aren't as high profile as every single Covid mutation.

Antibody's are an effective treatment for all the HIV strains. They will be the answer for living with Covid too.

Sure, but this seems to be based on taking a quote from the Chair of the South African Medical Association out of context: she was specifically referring to younger people with no underlying health conditions, and specifically warned that it could hit people who are older/at risk much harder.

    So could the ordinary flu.

    Set shots maybe.

Still pretty high for field kicks though I reckon. A big factor in why his field kicking is so hit or miss.

Near the end of the season I read a stat that was something like trac was number one for total inside 50 kicks.

But of the top 50 was last for targets hit!

Truck played the game of his life in the GF and has always said he wants to be a big game player.

I think his ball drop has improved but we will see next year. I would bet he will have the most goal assists in the league. And Oliver the most handballs to the player with the most goal assists in the league.

Howes has plenty of time to develop the ball drop from the limited footage might be an area he needs to work on

    Very high ball drop.

Hopefully you're right about getting good depth with his kicks as that is important attribute for a potential winger.

From the very short clip of McVee on the MFC website he looks to have a strong technique

Petracca had the highest ball drop I have ever seen and in the grand final they were comparing him to Daicos.

    It can be fixed.

Dr Nick Coatsworth (amongst a few other health professionals) has some interesting views on the potency of Omicron

    Hope he's right

Let's hope his opinion is how it plays out.

There is alot of misinformation out there and alot of guessing. I'd back a grandma who backs horses on numbers or names over a modeller.

I read somewhere (I think in the Lancet Journal) amongst the thousands of articles I have read about Covid that once you catch it and recover you are 26 times more immune from it than someone who is vaxicinated.

Even if that is correct it is still a great reason to get vaxxed because it doesn't seem to stop the spread but you have a much greater chance of mild symptoms and not getting it again.

What are your thoughts on the new Carona strain Omicron given it is an anagram for moronic?

Why do people immediately assume that a new variant is more potent and more importantly more deadly. A successful virus does not kill its host. If you imagine an airbourne virus that kills immediately then that virus will die out as it does not have opportunity to spread. The most successful virus does not kill and it may not have symptoms. Perhaps what we need is a less deadly Covid that we all can catch and get on with life.

Edit. It is a simplistic view I know, but perhaps an alternative to the chicken littles.

I would say sensible not simplistic.

If you didn't want to put a vaccine into your body, you probably wouldn't want to ingest a monoclonal antibody.

Vaccine resisters will still claim natural immunity is the only way to go (or that pills contain Bill Gates' microchips). Guess it will be good for those who cry out for a vaccination on their way into  the ICU.

I doubt it. Once they get Covid I reckon a majority would take antibody's. But who knows.

Not the appropriate thread and apologies if it's been dealt with.

I watched the replay of the last h and a game against cats aka one of the best comebacks.

In that last minute Gus was pinged for a deliberate or " insufficient intent" for a kick that slipped off his foot. Obviously given the amount of time left and the score nothing could have been less true. That umpire should be called out as not qualified to arbitrate any games. There are howlers we all make but that was the worst call ever and could have so easily cost us top spot.

Not calling for a score review in a GF when Max appeared to kick a goal and the game was in the balance was possibly worse.
