Nothing gonna change I reckon. There was a good comment a few weeks back that as long as we keep playing this handball receives/play on style we will have problems because we don't have the smarts to make the right decision let alone execute it. Its only a matter of time the ball falls into the hands of Oliver or Viney or Anb running past and they don't make the right decision or execute consistently enough. Might need to resort back to a high stoppage, slow pace style as it plays to our midfields strengths. If we want to play this quick style, there's only one player on our list capable of taking the right option every time on instinct at pace. And he's stuck in a back pocket in a 94 point drubbing. Masterful and creative coaching!

dropped off massively. For a guy that is 205cm somehow allows smaller guys to out position him and he's a below average read in flight. He was good tonight tho for someone who half the time looks like he doesn't care.
-
Apart from Darcy, who looks like he's 18 playing against under 12s, really like the look of James O'Donnell too. Kid can seriously play. They have some spine developing. But many big guys do you really need flying for the same ball. I'd love JUH but here's a first rounder, give us Naughton please.

Not will be. Is. I'd say he's already a top ten forward. His stats definitely suggest so. Meanwhile Harley read isn't a top 40 midfielder but a prohibitive favourite for the rising star. Should be Darcy imo

Sam Darcy is the best under 21 forward in the AFL. Already has an elite or above average rating in every metric (especially the one that has the highest correlation for key forward success and longevity, marks per game.) Has played 17 games. Would like to see JVR boost his 3 marks per game average well above 4. Most of the good forwards of the current era started off around this mark. Pardon the pun.

just forgetting the stats for a moment (and yes I know you were addressing a previous point) the games we have lost the opposing mids have really dominated the coaches votes and score involvements. Heeney, Warner, Cripps, Walsh, Rayner, Dunkley, Mccluggage, Reid, Kelly. So this isn't a one off. Sure, there's the odd Weitering and Waterman but by and large the midfield opponents of Oliver and Viney and Petracca have really been the influential opposition match winners on our losses. (And even a few of our wins). They haven't been abysmal but they've had their colours lowered repeatedly, which is a huge step down.

This is an excellent balanced summary. What would you do with Oliver and Viney this week and beyond? Imo, both are playing totally unaccountable football post stoppage (maybe instructed to). One week we are watching Cripps leisurely run past Oliver inside 50 then it's Kelly running around by himself yesterday for 40 minutes. (Promisingly though Oliver really showed some old signs in the 2nd half, he really lifted around the ball). Viney is a liability with ball in hand. I've been saying for a number of years that we've had issues with disposal (not earth shattering news) but the ONE thing we haven't done is change the players in the midfield. The term forward 'comnection' implies two nodes. Would you be open to my boy Mcvee getting a run or just Bowey? I think Pickett looks great in the centre square with his pressure but even when he breaks free it's 50/50 he kicks it correctly or makes the right decision. (Apart from the fact he's really needed forward right now as much as possible. )

6. Mcvee 5. Howes 4. Bowey 3. Woey 2. Petracca 1. ANB. Just so tired of watching kicks go over heads, or bounce short, or hospital handballs or guys who just slam it on the boot when they have time. By the same guys week after week after week. We had 36 inside 50s for the game against a bottom 4 side on a dry day. The list above represents disposal efficiency.

Weekly request that Goodwin gives our best kick a crack in the midfield. I know its not the game plan to kick it to the advantage of a leading player but it's kinda nice to watch every now and again.

Scratch that! Didn't see the teams. Laurie not even named. The guy is meant to be one of the best runners at the club. Playing in Perth on a hot day. But we're picking underdone veterans. Its all a bit bizarre sometimes.
-
Huge week for Laurie and Woey. Likely they'll both get a significant step up in game time. Its pretty hard on young kids to constantly be cameo performers so we'll get a real assessment of where they are at. Hard, dry ground should suit both players so really keen to see them beat their opponents.

I believe he played his junior footy as a forward and from last year's D'land interview he mentioned he was a bit miffed at the Suns when he was asked to play in defence but eventually embraced it. Personally, I don't mind seeing these sort of moves if the game isn't close. Doubt it's going to lead to an onslaught of goals one way or the other but the experience of playing in different positions has value.

Wow. What an extraordinarily misleading headline. It was (only) 3 minutes and he was essentially defending them. But it got me to click. You win fox footy. 👏🏾

Where's the metric for that? A few research studies say they get it right over 90 percent of the time. Every single sport fan complains about it's umpires. It's so tiresome. Best thing of the week was a separate thread for it. Can we do it every week? People should be welcome to vent. But has umpiring actually got worse globally or has everyone in the past 20 years become more ready to be outraged and upset. Actually that's an easy one to answer. Nevermind.

Respectfully disagree on the quarter time address. Listening to his press conference he seemed pretty filthy about our efforts in the contest at both ends of the ground in the 1st. As much as their goal kicking was (slightly) anomalous, our contest work was too and I'm sure he focused on what we can control.

Bravo to Goody tonight with swinging the magnets a bit. Now then, don't be afraid to put Bowey or McVee or Riv in the guts one of these days if you want to hit a few more targets forward of centre.
-
McKay didn't play the last two times we've faced them. In the 3 games prior to that, we haven't a match up for him he's kicked 9 goals, taken 10 contested marks and 12 marks inside 50s. And fwiw, he towelled us up during the practice match earlier this year. He's a very good player and the one we need to stop imo. TMac strengths matched up well to Cameron, I'm not so sure for McKay, so hope he gets lots of help.

2 year contract extension screams 'bookmark this thread'.

Well, reading between the lines Melk and Salo are working their way back solidly and getting closer every week. Goal kicking practice remains a focus The 5 day break is being especially considered with the short and light run Confirmed Bowey is playing (which you actually scooped last week) No injuries or obvious niggles otherwise I assume you would have mentioned it. It was a fine report. Thanks.
-
This was forward 50 retention rates, Petty has taken 4 contested marks for the year. Trac has 5. Fwiw the two leaders right are Curnow (26) and McKay (22).

What would be interesting is going back through history and seeing how goal kicking accuracy has changed in the way you define it (ie. adjusted for difficulty) . Simply looking at raw accuracy is not a robust method. For every day Schwartz was kicking them from both scg boundaries there was surely days where Mooney and his team mates were missing from the goal square. Other sports do this quite well, particularly baseball. I also wonder if team scientifically assess the best kick in their teams from varying positions Eg, have every player take shots from varying positions inside 50 and record their results. Of course match day pressure is not factored in but it does provide a benchmark of a players goal kicking skill from certain positions. Eg max from outside 50 and Fritter from a right forward pocket 😃

Australia would have to build another data centre to cope with the demand on the servers during the Match day thread.

The Drums are starting to beat for North
Jjrogan replied to Sir Why You Little's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'd say you're dead on. Aflw costs 57 mln to operate. Last year, MFC made 56 mln in revenue (3 mln profit). Generally speaking the AFL is drowning in $$$$. 1 bln of revenue. 650mln operating surplus Then they pay the clubs 400 mln The AFLPA gets 50 mln Grassroots they made a commitment to give 10 percent of revenue (100mln!!) Net profit is 120mln. (And they don't pay tax) They have 160 mln in cash on hand. TLDR: there's easily enough runway to expand one or two teams, not eliminate them. And for what it's worth the salary cap needs to be increased in line with global sports. Revenue has essentially doubled in 10 years, and salary cap has only gone up 60 percent. -
We'd be on 124.6. So 6.1. I reckon we look back and pin point this as the turning point in our forward line structure. Turner can play, he leads up, finds separation, has sticky hands and is faster than JVR or Petty (or so it appears). Real prospect.
