Petracca & Oliver at the Dees in 2026?
As bad as it sounds. IF AND ONLY IF HE WAS OK WITH IT, what would you trade him to the cats or a pies in 2026 if we were bottom 3 again. 2nd rounder?

PREGAME: Rd 06 vs Fremantle
Or moved back. Perty or May forward. So what everyone gets wrong abot KPF is its not goals per game but marks per game that matters. Find me a handful of players that average less that 4 -5 marks per games that were elite or those above that who were duds. If you can't meet this minimum by your 3 rd or 4th season you're not going to make it as a KPF.

VOTES: Rd 05 vs Essendon
Langdon Gawn Bowey Melksham 2. Spargo Salem So everyone hates the turnovers, skill errors and lack of forward cohesion and yet every week they get votes. Its bizarre. Its what Goody seems to be doing also. Im rewarding goal assists.

ultimately it might be a form of this gameplan stops the transition movement era. Good old fashion one on one, hold your positions. Beat your man, not the system. Dont allow easy swtiches and midfields be accountable. I think Tigers did it in the second half against Carlton (admittedly its Carlton). Giants also employ at times. Easier said than done but we might get some 'learnings'.

POSTGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon
At some point the media, supporters, and coaching staff will come to accept the fact as much as this is about Goodwins's failing as a coach its as much about the failures of the players. You are asking Test cricketers to play 20/20 and frankly, they are just not good enough. I see a team attenpting to play fast, corridor football but they continually turn the ball over and are lost on defence accordingly. Have to start again.

3rd quarter goals. Spargo entry to a leading Petty. Demanded someone lead. Fritsch heads up play on Melksham superb kick to a leading Fritsch Melksham spectacular mark, superb kick to a moving Pickett Good kick from Chandler to numbers, Spargo goal assist to Sharp. The reason why it was good is because of the names it wasnt in the hands of.

PREGAME: Rd 06 vs Fremantle
I really hate to single out a pkayer but JVR is a big problem for our midfield. He refuses or is unable to get separation and lead flat out at the ball carrier (and hsi ball read and bodywork is sub par). He's just not quick enough and his only strength is his pack crashing ability which the game has moved away from. He's taken 6 marks in 5 weeks. He needs to play back or be dropped. At this point its not about confidence, you have to make tough calls and realise he isnt the right piece for this puzzle.

Game plans, tactics and all that jazz
Just to deep dive on this further. For kicking efficiency for 2024 (and years prior it does looks the same), I agree the 'issue' is indeed Oliver (55 percent) and Viney (53), to some extent Petracca (63) but not Lever and May who were the highest kick efficiency (83) for us last year and ranked in the top 40 for defenders (even adjusted for May kicking in). Their foot skills are fine and appropriate to the comp average for their position (if not above) throughout their careers but maybe their errors hurt the scoreboard so supporters notice them more. Efficiency is one thing but where it really hurt in 2024 was disposal per turnover and disposals per clanger, where Viney and Oliver are both around 5, league worst for guys that get that mucb of the ball. (As an aside, Harley Reid is at 4 and a large part of why I think hes overated) Where I also worry is that the players often nominated as 'good'users, Windsor (57) Kolt (47) and Kozy (57l are yes better, but they are far from good users with respect to competition averages. You'd want them to be your worst users, not your best. (Small sample size admittedly). Thankfully Langford and Lindsay look to be elite. To give a random conparison, Adelaide last year Laird (60), Scholl(66), Crouch (61), Soligo (55), Dawson(63). Rankine (60). Point is I think we are significantly off it and personally, with a heavy heart I'd trade those with value in Oliver, Petracca and Pickett for a total of 4 to 5 first rounders and keep Viney (have to).

PREGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon
Not a panacea but some point this year id love to see JVR played at fullback and May play at full forward. (Both played these positions as juniors) May plays in front, really attacks the footy and his marks stick. JVR has never been a high mark player and constantly misreads the flight of the ball, maybe deep down he is better suited to the back line where he can be led to the ball. If this season is indeed gone, then we should throw around the magnets a bit regardless.

Time to go Goody?
We are miles behind . A lot of overrating of our youngsters. Langford and Lindsay are the real deal, clean, thoughtful and reliable with disposal. The rest are cameos at best. Bowey maintains a consostency, but hes never going to dominate or reach AA leve. Mcvee might as a specialist BP thats about it. Years of wilderness ahead i fear

PREGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon
I knew nothing would be different from the very opening bounce. Goodwin needs to make a statement and walk the walk himself. You cant keep bemoaning clangers and turnovers then continue to play the competitions leading turnover player (for the past decade no less) in the middle week after week after week.

Time to start a rebuild?
My concern is a) only a few of these players are legit elite to the level of AA consistency. Other teams have much more talent under 25. b) that forward line. Er. And that backline. c) the salary cap weve given to our elite players will cost us dearly at the back end of their careers. Other clubs will come hard for Lindsay and Langford in 2 years time knowing full well we are paying multiple guys way overs. We will have to dump salary cap and or draft picks. I think we're in a spot of bother here medium term.

Harvey Langford Rising Star nomination Rd 3
The 2 things that stand out watching these highlights are his skills under pressure and that he might be Joey Montagna's favourite player before the year is out.

Time to go Goody?
1st quarter We move the ball through the corridor to Langdon. For the sake of moving the ball quickly he handpasses from overlap run to Billings who handpasses to Oliver who has nowhere to go doubles back on his left and turnover rebound. Goal. Oliver gives away a 50 metre penalty through impetulance which hes been doing his entire career. Learnings . Goal. Langford kicks beautifully into the corridor to Bowey who kicks a beauty from 50 in front. Rivers makes a mistake by hand trying to go back into the corridor. Turnover. Senior players in oliver trac fritsch watching, pointing, high fiving while suns player runs past. Learnings. Goal. Please dont make me watch the rest of the game. If the right players get the ball we are ok. If players are switched on, we are ok. Right now its Goodwin's job to get both done.

yea, you're right of course. Just watching the same mistakes and turnovers week after week is very frustrating. We need to get a different midfield mix which is probably on the cards anyhow once everyone is available.

Time to go Goody?
Yea im happy to priortise this. I like winning games and losing them on expected score or bad goal kicking. It was fun being relevant. Enjoy your new paradigm.

PREGAME: Rd 04 vs Geelong
Out: this absurb game plan of fast movement, handball chains and corridor with cringe worthy skills. Humiliation. Delusion that we can play this way. In: contest defence, playing to the strengths of the playing list. winning by boredom. 4 points. respect. Not going to happen so look away now.

Game plans, tactics and all that jazz
"Brisbane, the fastest team in the competition last year. Sydney, the second slowest, but both of them are the highest scoring teams. โSo you look at the second slowest with Sydney, itโs not a negative, that is just how they want to play, itโs working for them. You go to the year before, Collingwood were actually the third slowest team in the competition, but it got them the flag." At the very least, the way they are calculating this new metric doesnt sound like something that is necessarily correlated with success but nevermind, lets continue to pray at the ball movement altar.

Forward line questions
NM (mel) Scoring from def - 38 (22) From fwd - 44 (30) From centre - 43 (14) Scoring from Stoppage - 69 (17) Scoring from Turnover - 60 (43) My own opinion is that we have prioritsed ball movement (in this forum and the coaching staff) in the past 12 months and thats been a SIGNIFICANT detriment to our turnover differential, where the game ultimately matters. We just dont have the right players in the right period of their careers for this game plan. Hope im very wrong.
