Poll: Who do you want with our first two picks?
Foxfooty’s phantom has us passing on Kemp & Stephens to take Pickett at 11. Balmer states that the Dogs are red hot on Pickett at 13. Only pick trade I can see us doing is with Port if Stephens is there at 10 and Hawks show that they’re keen on him at p11. Sticks in the craw a bit that we potentially had a play at Hayden Young if we held onto pick 8. https://coupler.foxsports.com.au/api/v1/article/amp/afl/afl-draft-2019-afl-mock-draft-afl-phantom-draft-matt-balmer-draft-prospects-profiles-rankings/news-story/8112d07059324ce3be7497a4bc03e805?__twitter_impression=true

What to do with Pick 10?
Hawthorn apparently have some interest in Dylan Stephens. Wonder if that opens up the conversation for a pick swap with Port if Stephens gets through. Kemp may be around in the teens.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - KYSAIAH KROPINYERI PICKETT
I love watching Pickett play and would love to get him, but pick 10 is WAAAYYY to high for him. Even if we love the kid, we have to objectively rank the kids and select accordingly. My hope now is that we split pick 10 on the night and use an appropriate pick to get him whilst getting something else in. The market for a player like McAsey may allow that to eventuate, but that's impacted by Adelaide's selection. If they pass, Geelong may pounce to get ahead of Hawthorn.

What to do with Pick 10?
Was the same article that was up a day earlier saying we’d split 8 and take Jackson at 3 just substituting pick 10 for 8. Not sure if it’s based on further intel that we’ll split 10.

The Splitting of Pick 8
Kysiah Pickett, Elijah Taylor or Dylan Williams.

The Splitting of Pick 8
There's an increasing chance that Young gets through to 8, so I hope we don't make a decision to split until draft day, but with clubs rankings of players and more knowledge of where players might go, it looks like picks in the 20's will be handy as there may be a few (generally) highly rated kids slipping through. If we get to 8 and Young and Ash are off the board, I'm comfortable splitting as we are a good chance of getting similar types a bit later on as well getting a small forward. What this draft pool does have is a number of half-back options and small forwards!

Casey Demons Offseason News
Thought he was a solid prospect in his draft year. Did a lot of things well without necessarily standing out in any area. Thought he might be a good one to run off a flank for us, but behind a few at WC. Happy to see him have a go at Casey.

Phantom Drafts
The Hun have us trading pick 9 (adjusted after Green bid by Sydney has been match) and GWS going with Ash ahead of Young, who slides to Freo's pick at 8. If that's where things are trending, then we have an interesting pool of teams who may be willing to move up, but not really sure which players in particular will generate the interest. Kemp, Bergman (who Gold Coast do like, linked with the Dogs at 13/14) or Serong may be around the mark if Adelaide go for McAsey at 7. https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/melbourne-considering-trading-pick-8-to-land-three-top-prospects-in-next-weeks-afl-draft/news-story/efc635c787e5f19fae30aab8f6fa5daf

Hayden Young (Drafted by Fremantle)
There are 5 or 6 quality half back options in this draft alone. We could select a good one at 8 or split that pick and still potentially nab Kemp, Gould, Rivers or Day.

2019 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
I think his season was vastly underrated. Think he'll end up going higher than what he is currently expected to. If we don't go with Young and end up splitting 8, I hope we take a good look at Trent Rivers. Had an excellent season splitting between hb for WA and inside mid for East Freo. A Jackson, Rivers, Pickett result from the draft would tick a lot of boxes for us.

Brodie Kemp (drafted by Carlton)
Interesting that Cooper Stephens, who played 2 games before breaking his leg and missing the rest of the year, is ranked at 16.

Jack Martin
IF we were still set on getting Martin, we still have time to reload contracts to fit him in. $650k across 5 years isn't wildly extravagant in the current landscape, but the $1 million front end loading is. AFL.com article basically says the fact that we can still re-organise contracts means the door isn't totally shut on us, but GC is effectively ruled out: https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-11-11/jack-martin

Splitting Draft Pick 3
I'd have him behind all of those named. Taylor intrigues me the most, but have a hunch that he's not someone we're considering all that strongly.
-
Splitting Draft Pick 3
If we do end up deciding to go with Jackson as high as 3, we could split 8 and select Gould as a similar(ish) player to Young and go with whichever small/medium forward is available with the second pick. That could be any one of Weightman, Bergman and Pickett all of whom we've been linked with to varying degrees.

Jack Martin
And Hawthorn and Geelong before them.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BENNELL
Bennell was one of Martin’s best mates at the Suns according to this piece from last year. They did seem to look for each other pretty frequently in the GC forward line.
-
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - LUKE JACKSON
There were a few that ranked Grundy the second best player in the pool. Key difference b/n Grundy and Jackson in their draft year is exposure and runs on the board. Grundy showed plenty as a 17 year old and then backed it up in his top age year, including good performances for Sturt’s senior team and dominating at the Champs. Jackson’s recent conversion to the AFL pathway means there’s not a lot of prior performance and he’s only shown a fraction of what Grundy had at the same time. Also, he got better as the season wore on and some his best performances came off broadway at WAFL reserves level post champs. I think those performances really elevated his standing, but most of us haven’t seen those games. I watch a fair amount of junior footy, but I am confident that I haven’t seen enough of Jackson to make a judgement on whether we should pick him as high as 3.

James Harmes Signs for 5 Years
Agreed. Harmes still had 2 years to run on his contract, so fair old extension. Wonder if his contract has been structured (or re-structured) to give us some flexibility as early as this offseason.

Unless you’re the Suns and you’re given a priority pick to keep mates together...

Jack Martin
I guess all of that still applies to us if Martin isn't delisted prior to the draft. If we keep working away in the background (which I'm certain we are still doing, but not in the open), it would be negligent of Dover to ignore us IF we could clearly match salary demands. With player salaries still being private, I think there's a fair amount of 'best guess' scenario's being thrown around in these conversations (ie Carlton should have more cap space than Melbourne), but there's still a relative lack of certainty there for all involved. How good is our poker face?

Jack Martin
Dover's got a history of this. In the lead up to the 2012 mini draft this is from an article in relation to Martin nominating for the mini draft. I'd like to know Jason's thoughts on the 'wrong club' and the 'right environment': It is a system that Martin's manager, Jason Dover, said could work for the teenager if he is recruited into the right environment. However, it is possible he would remain in WA for the first 12 months of any deal if that didn't happen. "We need to make a decision by Wednesday as to whether Jack nominates or not and part of that decision is weighting up which clubs are likely to figure for this," Dover told AFL.com.au. "If it looks like the deal is done with the wrong club and we don't believe it would be best for Jack's development, then there is every chance that he'll stay in WA for that 12 months. "Having a year in the system and developing a lot of the positive habits would be perfect for him in the right environment and with the right plan around him. "I can see it working really well for a player like Jack, it's just trying to get him into the right environment."
