Lack of Finals = Failed Season?
Engorged Onion replied to Engorged Onion's topic in Melbourne Demons
Just on a side note I'm going to derail my on thread - [censored] I hate the term unacceptable - and particularly coaches who use it post a massive loss. It's as hollow as David Warner having a media conference to state that he is going to take responsibility for clocking Root - does merely saying taking responsibility actually mean taking responsibility. Irrespective of performing good or not good - teams are always striving for more...by stating that something is unacceptable behaviourally is window dressing for the spectators to reduce a bit of anger and sadness -
Just wanted some general thoughts around whether we all had expectations at the start of the year about whether we were a finals bound team for 2017 or not. I want to remove the commentary around disappointing losses (as I believe all clubs experience those) and just because we have been in the 8, it doesn't mean that the team should stay there. I for one think 2017 has been a significant improvement in game style, personnel and ladder position. Things that need immediate attention is outside run - mind you - Simon has spoken about building from the contest out - which the team has in spades - perhaps this trade period is where we try to accumulate a few outside runners with foot skills. Wins against the odds have been great and naturally against significantly weaker sides disappointing - so from a mindset (or perhaps a coaching perspective) this needs to needs to be remedied. The only other area that needs addressing (leaving aside, the option for players to 'grow' in experience and skill level) would be forward line structure/entry into the F50. Whether that is strategy or personnel I am not sure.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - ROUND 20

I'd agree with the first two sentences - Jones and Vince come in - they're still the pecking order - I feel he has a lot to give *and learn - he's clearly in future plans with the 1 year extension. -

I hear what you're saying, and I see a distinct difference between detailing strategy vs naming individuals. There are no unknown quantities re personnel - however its up to the individual players from opposing teams to do their due diligence - not just the coaches feeding them info. -

I disagree that there is any advantage of disclosure or non disclosure - can you please clarify what the advantage is from your perspective @sue. All AFL clubs plan for a myriad of options - and 12 hours early notice would mean sfa. -

All this talk about Bronwlow's got me thinking - Did Jobe ever find his Brownlow? Or has it been forgotten now as an issue about integrity? -
What a great stat - I just text it in to SEN to try and get some media love for him - not that I listen to the show... maybe someone listening can let me know if its repeated on air.

Plenty of papers on that - lets walk to the car yard and get the $25,000 VW golf , the $35,000 golf or the $45,000 - most people discount the $25k because they feel the won't get enough, or its not good enough - the difference between the $35k and the $45k is perceived value - do I get the same tangible benefits, or am I getting ripped off. I'd go the $35k - hence Jake will definitely be coming to Melbourne. You heard it hear first. -

@Skuit - what's Adelaide list management position? What is their prioritising from a financial perspective? Perhaps they're resigned to losing him due to his partner resigning and wanting to come back (could be rumour of course) - perhaps it is a fait accompli that he returns - its no longer about oweing clubs respect due to development as a young player, these are purely pragmatic times. Irrespective of financial offers, its about your values as an individual - closer to home (connections, family, community) vs the brotherhood of one club that nurtured you - even though this is fundamentally replaceable (see Dangerfield, Mayne, et al). Either way there is benefit and cost - personally, I'd join the Dees rather than a small town hick team from Radelaide, from a 'values' based perspective, -
Tis pretty straightforward - it is advisable to look back over the last 2 seasons (arbitrary figure) - and not beyond - a) because of where his tenure began b) because the personnel has changed significantly c) the game has evolved and d) its the best 'motivational' line for the players, so they are not bound by their past anymore, so that they can make potential errors, which end up being positive risks (kicks on the 45 etc etc). By no stretch does that statement infer the need not to reflect on strategies etc about previous meetings with North. The reality is this, each game, of each week, is an opportunity to further, or reduce 'the brand' 'the style' , 'professionalism' (whatever language we wish to use) of how the players want to go about it - as spectators/supporters - we love to buy into the feel of positivity - think about when we beat port - and loathe the discomfort of a loss - yet whether we win or lose, each is a game that we need to back up from.
