Im not so sure. We were massivly outnumbered around that stoppage and with watts in the ruck and it took that bit of brilliance and desire from Oliver to set up that goal. I would suspect that goodwin might look at that in the review and say great effort from Watts, Oliver and Jones but where was everyone else? We are meant to be controling clearances with numbers at the ball arnt we? Maybe they are happy to have more on the outside in a forward 50 stoppage scenario but if Hickey had won the hitout as he probably should have, they would have had an uncontested rebound 50. Im not trying to be negative because it was a great sequence but at the same time I would like them to just ask the question of each other, we cant hope to have that work against the best sides.

I think Weitering played on Rance for a learning experiance. He may do the same again to learn off TMac but if they do bring in Mckay as you sugest, I would think Weitering is every chance to go back. Especially when you add in Silvagni who is also 191 and is capable of playing as a 3rd tall.

I said that after the Essendon game...

Yes and no. Because so many of our players were running off the back of the square they would be in no mans land if the saints won clear possession. The ball would just get kicked over their heads. What it does stop is the run and carry out of the centre clearance, forces the opponent to kick straight away which is easier to defend. I just like that it backs us into winning the ball more often than not.

TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 2
ArtificialWisdom replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
No longer is a win against Carlton enough. After the way we played on Saturday we really need to win well. I dont want a repeat of the 2nd Gold Coast game. We need to start to not only beat the teams below us but also show that we are a class above. It should be a big win. -
I think that at the game his little defencive efforts go unnoticed. He reads the play extremely well without the ball. He is also pretty good for a tall kid at keeping the ball infront of him when its at ground level, A couple of times when the ball hit the deck he would be running side by side with the opposition being pushed aside just because he is leaner and still managed to get a boot or a hand to the ball to keep it moving and keep himself in the contest. I know why people hate him playing but I think it is those little efforts that keep him in the team. Even a couple of his mistakes he made he was able to clean up after himself. He seems to get abused even when he does well. The one where he ran back with the flight spoiled riewoldt and forced the ball to within a metre of the line before a very good snap under pressure from the saints player to riewoldt in the goal square. That was as good of an effort you can expect from a defender out numbered and out positioned like that, yet still there was yelling and jeering from those in the crowd that Oscar isnt up to AFL footy. Some people have to accept that no matter what they do, defenders are going to be beaten when the opposition does something really good. Could have been Rance and they still should have kicked a goal from that.

It was good coaching because it was taking advantage of our momemtum. Guarantee it wont happen in most games but it is good to see it happening while we had dominance. In the past we have struggled to score when we have momemtum. This really pushes the idea that when we feel we have control we want to keep piling on the score. We scored 120 points after a 2 goal first quater and after putting the que in the rack 5 mintues into the last where we pocketed 2 more in junk time. that means from qtr time till 4 minutes into the last we scored a massive 90 points (14.6) vs 30 in the rest of the game. Goody's gameplan is all about scoring when we have control and suffocating the opposition when we dont. That all being said. Its flirting with danger playing 3-7 in the forwadline because when it comes down to it, at 3-7 it was more about St Kilda's defencive structure falling apart than it was uss playing well. But what it did do is it made defenders panic, watching King's vision showed all the saints defenders panic and run up to help the out number in the middle and hogan just walked out the back. I would expect to see them try this a number of times but im not sold that it would work against the best defences. Saints could have played man on man plus 4 in a zone, Hogan should never have marked that ball uncontested.

haha it's not as bad as that "3rd man up" with Vickery and Hartung. Such a stupid way to implement the rule.
-
Watch the lead up to ANB's goal in the last and tell me how Max lost that ruck contest to Ross. Happens to the best of them
-
haha I know it doesnt really work that way, but it makes me feel better to think they are focusing on what they need to improve on in those repeated wasted opportunities
-
Intentional and off the ball which isnt very good, but it also wasn't all that hard. I'd say 1 down to fine with a plea.
-
Good to see some others noticed this. Was a pin point and brave kick. He is actually a pretty good kick above 30m it's just the chip passes that he seams to struggle with. It's only confidence holding him back. Dropping him wont help with that.

I am counting my eggs though and i have a few just hope they all hatch

When will Melbourne break these embarrassing records?
ArtificialWisdom replied to praha's topic in Melbourne Demons
We are also havent beaten them during a solar eclipse -
Foxtel is in all sorts of trouble, they are doing everything to protect their exclusives. Apparently they have even been buying out rights to movies and tv shows being shown in Australia so that netflix and the like cant show them.
-
Maybe it is, not for any selection decisions, just for a chuckle at our foolish theories XD

Last year we were 9th after beating the giants and never got higher. The year before we were in the 8 after beating the Suns but fell straight out. -
I feel like Kent has shown he has the tank, he has at times not come in with the right defencive attitude and there is every chance Goody's philosphy would be to sit him at Casey untill he is showing that defencive attitude every week. I just think Kent has shown better signs over a longer peroid than ANB who has had just 1 or 2 good games. But as I said earlier that I would be happy with either of them picked this week.
-
I agree he played well but is still think he is a midfielder filling in the forwardline for the missing small forward. Will he actually be droped? Maybe not, but he is the one right on the edge I think. Thats not even a big knock on ANB, It's just the fact that Kent is a better natural forward. This is the basis of my perspective: If you look at a "best 22" scenario right now I dont have ANB in it. So if I was coach and had decided Kent (IMO is best 22) was ready to play I would pat Alex on the back for coming up as the "23rd man" playing his role really well and then set him some things to work on at Casey to see if he can get himself a more perminant role in the team. It sucks for him but thats what we need to have happen of the next 10 years to keep improving and be a really good side. Injuried and dissapointing form will allow ANB plenty of opportunity throughout the year. Hannan might find himself in a similar position, if not this week then in coming weeks. Better/more experienced players are going to take peoples spots even if they played well on the day. It's these days we have been dreaming of for a decade. If Kent comes in and plays poorly and ANB continues to perform at Casey then the opposite will happen and the onus will be on Kent to earn his spot back.
-
Yeah its a fair call. Selection will be interesting this week. I wouldn't be conserened either way. They could bring them both in and drop someone like ANB and just say that the others are best 22 and there wouldnt be the slightest consern from me. But also another week in the 2s just for the run could be good for them too. My only other thought is they have both got enough experience that the speed of the game shouldn't be a shock to them.
-
Good to see the 2 best 22 players seemingly going alright. Id be happy with Tyson to come in off that but would also be happy to give him another run and bring him in super fresh against the Cats. Same deal with Kent. I think he is more valuable than ANB in the forwardline but ANB did enough to let them get more time into Kent before bring him back.
-
That quote is taken a bit out of context. He was commenting on Supercoach stats. Not saying that Omac should be as good as Talia
-
I hope they spend alot of time looking at that game. It needs to be drumed into them what happens when they don't bring any pressure. I said last year our most important win was Port Adelaide after playing so hard against the Hawks and this is a similar situation. We put alot into that Saints game, now the big challange is backing it up.
-
If fit then Frost comes in for Smith but I have doubts he will be up to mach fitness, if he cant play then I would bring in Bugg and play Lewis longer term down back, leaves us shorter but if we get on top in the midfield it wont matter. I want both Tyson and Kent back in but like I said in the post match thread, with ANB and Hannan both playing well on saturday we might be able to take a safer approach with these two. On a slightly different note, after last nights very disappointing and kinda overhyped Fyfe - Dangerfield matchup, could we go with the matchup of the future with Oliver and Cripps going head to head? Would be a fantastic contest.
