CHANGES: Rd 18 vs West Coast Eagles
ArtificialWisdom replied to WERRIDEE's topic in Melbourne Demons
I agree that the dogs didn't put any work into him, the first bounce sums this up perfectly. Wood looked straight at Petty then lined up 10m away from him. That said I still think you reward that performance, he was taking contested marks while Pruess was dropping chest marks and neither Hannan or Dunkley could touch the footy. Personally I'd drop Pruess and one of Dunkley or Hannan for both Weid and Smith (if they're fit). Without NicNat and Vardey I'm happy to live with Weid in the ruck as the backup. Hopefully Smith can play the same role on McGovern and that should give one of Petty or Weid Barass and the other a chance against a smaller opponent. -
I believe they are disappointed that "Good off the ball running patterns and accurate ball use between AFL midfielders and forwards" was not listed as a definition for "Connection" in the Oxford English dictionary.

Thank God, thought it was coming next week when we would have to play them on the rebound

You're right we could have Lochie O'Brien and Ned McHenry instead of Lever! We'd be way better off.

The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread

Trade it for Langdon, Hill, pick 7 take the highest skilled mid/forward available and let Freo deal with the unnecessary pressure on the new kid. -
The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread

I'm hopefull we put our hand up for Papley. Watch this space on Carlton, they're linked to just about every player shorter than 6 foot in their search for forward and back flankers. Hard to tell which are real and which are noise -
I did notice that the mids as a whole were rotating spots alot on Sunday. Never had 2 consecutive centre bounces line up the same. Oliver had a few runs as a forward but he rarely has an impact when forward. It's worth persisting with because of his size and clean pickups could result in scores if he actually got some 1-1 opportunities. Unfortunately none of our forwards ever get any space.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-07-15/eagles-sweating-on-naitanui-after-star-pulls-up-sore Starting to wonder if we will ever get to see NicNat and Gawn face each other in their prime... Haven't played each other since 2015 (their only duel). Since that time Gawn has gone from a nobody to the best tap ruckman in the comp. -
With the team struggling Oliver's flaws have been exposed. His insistence to handball at all costs has gone from a quirky habit to a flat out detriment to the team. His contested stuff is always going to be great but unless this changes he is never going to be truly elite. He has all the ability to be the superstar but he's holding himself back

Trac's personality lends itself to criticism. Whenever he plays well everyone will laud his positivity. But when he makes mistakes he'll be criticised for being arrogant. Trac has a set shot problem, I don't care what he does before he kicks, he's probably going to miss it regardless. He could do a handstand at the top of his run up for all I care. He's gonna miss anyway, I was more concerned that the zone wasn't set up properly and the dogs were able to go coast to coast almost completely uncontested.

Microsoft's spell checker is a lot more irritating than I remember -
Interesting that he has been out of contract for so long. Always assumed that Don's would sign him on (and I still think they will). Has struggled for parts of this year and famously struggles to score if the dons aren't playing well on the day.. but still would offer some pace/spark that we need up forward.

So that big breakout game.... No TMac, No Weid. Would really come in handy this week
-
You'd think so, doesn't bode well for his future beyond 2019. I'm surprised that both JWag or Omac were emergencies, Even just play one to allow May or Frosty to swing forward.
-
Only later 1st picks he would have been worth 10&18 or something like that, similar to Lever but top 6 is more often just the 1 first round pick. But given we had no intention of using that pick on the draft the club was happy to take the minor unders for Hogan to get May in the door. Anyone who thinks Hogan was worth pick 6 and another first round pick is kidding themselves hes not that good. At best we could have negotiated for a mid/late second round pick

Dogs were very lucky to still be in the game at qtr time. Cats were pretty dominant early but didn't put the score on the board (sounds familiar). It was realitively even across qtrs 2&3 then the dogs were clearly the best side in the last. If we can be efficient going forward we'll be in with a huge chance this week. But I suppose that could be said of each week on 2019

This is so true, picks are almost always rated higher than the player that ends up getting picked. Very few first round players end up with more trade value than the pick they were taken.

CHANGES: Rd 17 vs Western Bulldogs
ArtificialWisdom replied to Pinball Wizard's topic in Melbourne Demons
Possible but so far this year he's usually been pretty up front to say when best 22 players are going to pay vfl. Usually when they've said available they mean they'll pick them in the 1s. Unless he is suggesting that Jetta is not a walk up start anymore -

Gawn, Lever and Jetta all in. This could mean Petty is the unlucky out regardless of concussion -

Hoping Hore's collarbone didn't keep him out too long, we could get a month to end the season with this 6 playing together -
https://www.statsinsider.com.au/afl/shot-charting Given all the talk about our accuracy I thought this might interest some. Thanks to the ever wonderful place that is the internet. People have been compiling a shot chat since the start of 2018. For those interested in seeing who is shooting and from where. Here's a few of interest (Marty's is my favourite)

I actually agree with most of his article. We will likely need to get used to godfather offers coming for Clarry. If this year is the outlier then I think we'll have nothing to worry about, but if we have another bad year then he'd be stupid to not to consider his future elsewhere. The sun's will always be able to over more money than us. He could get $1.5m or more up there. Not to mention the potential banana boat endorsement. But wins will always help us keep him. His comment on Gibbs is spot on. Although I don't want him, he is at least the type we need, rightly Goddard suggests Gibbs as a discount Brad Hill. But Hill is a better fit for us on and off the field and for more years. Damn the expense

The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread

Potentially but Steve will be 30 next year. If we're keen to back in the likes of Baker to develop then he could be a good option to hold us over until Baker is ready to be the man. But if the suns offer him 3 or maybe even 4 years at more money as a FA it would be hard for us to match I do like this type of KPF deal. There's only up side in Day as a free agent. A few years as reasonable price would be a good ready made player -
The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
ArtificialWisdom replied to Nascent's topic in Melbourne Demons
I've been trying to build a 22 that could make a move for top 4 in 2020. There’s a little bit of my own flare on it, most notable is Salem into the centre as a new prime mover. We're screaming out for class ball use in the middle and we already have it! I'm also aware there are some who doubt that we can play May, Lever, Hore and Frost all together. I'll bank on Frost's ability to play on speedy smalls as well as talls. As it is I think we have: FB: Jetta May Frost (int) HB: Hore Lever ____ | Hibb ---------------------------- Fl: Gawn Olivr Harmes | Gus C : ____ Salm Frit | Viney ---------------------------- HF: Trac TMac Melk | ____ (fwd/mid) FF: ____ Weid Hann Depth is an interesting mix with some players in more than 1 list capable in multiple roles. Wouldn't want more than 5 or 6 of these in the team before we start having a big drop in output. As evidenced by 2019 Def Depth: Petty, JWag, Omac, Hunt, Jones, KK*, JSmith* Mid Depth: Baker, Jones, Pruess, KK, AVB*, ANB, Dunkley, Sparrow Fwd Depth: Lockhart, Hunt, AVB, ANB, Dunkley, Spargo, TSmith, JSmith, CWag Delist/Retire: Lewis, JKH, Keilty, Maynard, Stretch, Garlett Ongoing Development: Bedford, Chandler, Jordan, Bradtke, Walker, Nietschke *Horribly unreliable fitness records means these potentially quality players were ruled out of my 22. What we are missing: Defender: Preferably with a good 2 way runner to help us spread from the back half quickly. The obvious player that has been discussed is Ed Langdon. He would be a handy inclusion. Wing/Outside Mid: Baker has shown a bit in this role and given the unlikely nature of us being able to trade for anyone it is likely we'll need to hope he steps up. Brad Hill would be my target if he does go for a move home but I have no idea how we could get that deal done. Maybe bundle him up with Langdon and Freos first (8-12) for our first(3-5) and our 2019 first would be a risk but maybe worth taking Small Forward: And I mean a real one! Not a midfielder or a defender who we throw forward and hope will compete. ANB, AVB, Hunt. These guys aren’t a big enough threat to the opposition ball in hand. I have mentioned Petruccelle in the past but it's unlikely WC would deal him. Richmond has a small army of forwards to look at but I'm not sure who is gettable and would suit us perhaps Bolton or Butler but I worry a little that they'd struggle away from Richmond. Fwd/Mid: Someone who is a threat on the scoreboard but can also move right up the ground and help out the mids. Lockhart has been good since coming on board but like Baker is still very inexperienced to be relied upon. When they are the 21st/22nd best players we're ok but this year they have been the 15/16th best players with all our outs and that’s too much to expect. Jack Martin is the one for me, I can’t ever imagining a deal getting done, Suns would want a first round pick which we wouldn’t have left to give. The Elephant in the room: I can’t post this without at least discussing the KPF. In my 22 I have Tom and Sam as our Keys. Many here are insistent that a better KPF should be priority 1. While you'd have to be stupid to not think there better options than these 2 out there, I think that for the most part those options are too expensive for the limited gain we would get. Spending the farm on Cameron or Brown might mean that 1 player kicks more goals, but our list would still be horribly unbalanced. What I would do is look into potential 19-22yo KPF in the lower level and try draft one with our 2nd/3rd pick, but good luck nailing that. The Dream Wish list: Ed Langdon, Brad Hill, Jack Petruccelle, Jack Martin. Of course getting all them is wildly unrealistic and the keen eyed would have noticed that even if those 4 came in we would need at least 1 more to go out of our list before the draft and I haven't really considered the salary cap at all. But I'm interested as to how others would go about filling those holes in our list. Wow this is much, much longer than I anticipated, better add a tl;dr. TL;DR We need a Defender (E. Langdon), a wingman (B. Hill), A small forward (J. Petruccelle) and a fwd/mid (J. Martin). Will never happen but that would be awesome thanks ? -
What gets me about this is that his kicking around the ground he keeps the ball so much lower. Which is why he's a relatively reliable kick everywhere else. His set shot routine has him completely change his kicking style. I don't get why he does it.
