Yes, there's an accident on the Monash affecting all outbound traffic from the Forster Road exit. There's congestion on the Westgate near Kororoit Creek Road. Seek alternate routes. And if you have home renovating needs, all carpets, floorings and furnishings are on sale this weekend at Harvey Norman. That's SEN Traffic.

Fantastic. External focus, game/fun, instant feedback. Great coaching. Not to mention: how many times in the past have we seen the up and under, hit and hope kick inside 50 which left our forwards stranded and is a defenders dream? Everyone saw it but Chocco is the one to rectify it.

OK, but there was no internet then, so it would have been impossible. A bit complicated for footballers, isn't it? "as one what? wombat?" "there's a team function? which nightclub?"

Yes, and same for Oliver. I bet they were both Scott. That *&%$#&*@

May may miss May, maybe. May May not miss many May matches.

There's more than just the coach at the Pies to attract the right sort of player. There's big Cox, there's Sidebottom, and also Roughead if you're into that sort of thing.

Important win as we were challenged 3 times, and each time we showed them who's boss. Almost worth two wins, for the belief factor. And still room for improvement in skills and finishing. Lever & May, Lever & May, Lever & May ... I reckon Langdon is every bit as important to our team. Jackson looks ready to explode any game now. Poor Nev ... all he's good for now is grabbing the ball and going to ground to force a ball up. GO DEMONS!

You can get in some practice outside the McDonalds in Lonsdale Street. If you put out a cap or a foam cup, you can save up for the tickets. Dear Joel can look forward to more of that as he gradually gets slower and less effective. I estimate 17 other clubs will take every opportunity to point this out to him.

There is nothing in the rules about what happens if a player who didn't dispose of the ball does not try to keep the ball in bounds. More "interpretations" and enforcing rules that only exist in someone's head. 18.10 OUT OF BOUNDS 18.10.1 Spirit and Intention Players shall be encouraged to keep the football in play. 18.10.2 Free Kicks - Out of Bounds A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player who: (a) Kicks the football Out of Bounds On the Full; (b) Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the Boundary Line and does not demonstrate sufficient intent to keep the football in play; or (c) fails to immediately hand the football to the boundary Umpire or drop the football directly to the ground once the football is Out of Bounds.

This is a perfect set up for our mental demons. The Cats & especially their coach will be preying on our ability to crumble and throw it all away. They will throw the kitchen sink at us in the first quarter, and if we can withstand that, we'll win. But if we start to doubt and have to play catch-up against an experienced & ruthless team with a wily coach ...

Channel 7 obviously believe BT *is* the entertainment. The game is just "the product" at hand to fill up air time, but to lure advertisers, there has to be an "entertainment experience", and that's where BT comes in. Ridiculous considering he's the worst kind of "horse racing" style announcer, with a strong dash of Rex Hunt catchphrases and other idiosyncracies. I had always thought the game itself was the entertainment -- how else to explain weekly crowds in the multiple tens of thousands -- but in the last few years the seagulls-chasing-a-chip rugby mauls have made it quite dull. This year it's actually enjoyable to watch games that MFC aren't in. There have been some cracking games already this season, so hopefully the pendulum will swing the other way and remove the emphasis on "star" commentators.

Loan System for Players to Swap Clubs
Mazer Rackham replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Radical thought ... but what if there was some kind of system of "reserve" players? You could have a bunch of players of all kinds, held in reserve ... rucks, mids, KPF/KPD, the lot ... ready to fill in at a moment's notice. You could even have entire teams of these "reserve" players. To go a step further: you could take a team of "reserve" players and affiliate them to a club. You could even have EVERY club have a "reserve" team of players -- as if they were PART of that club. These "reserve" teams could play each other every week, just like the main or "senior" teams do. As a curtain raiser maybe? When a "senior" player gets injured -- or even just loses form! -- you could swap in a "reserve" player, just like that. With the "reserve" team being part of the club as a whole, the "reserve" players could enjoy the same coaching & fitness benefits ... learn the "senior" game plan ... a lot of upside in this crazy idea of mine. No, forget it. I'm dreaming. Let's **** over our native game and dilute its uniqueness by importing more ideas from soccer & gridiron, just because it suits one coach of one club. -
This is half right. They should practice goal kicking in the wind. They should also practice it in the calm. The learning of the technique and the refining of the skill should be done in ideal conditions. Not when under fire. They can learn more advanced skills (like kicking in the wind) when they've got the basics down reliably. If you teach a man to swim by throwing him into the deep end of a pool, he may learn to freestyle but more likely he'll learn to dog paddle, and from then on, that's his default swimming style when under pressure. Max should learn to kick to the left and to the right so he knows what the difference feels like. Once he knows that, kicking it straight is a lot easier than when you're guessing.

Do the Tasmanians get any say in what their team might be called? Or do they have to live with the parochial assumptions of mainlanders? Or, maybe they want to continue the latest trend of naming new AFL clubs after American "franchises". We could have the Tassie Jazz, or the Tassie Dodgers.

Loan System for Players to Swap Clubs

Yes, let's let the coaches make the rules. What could go wrong? -
In an alternate universe ... Bailey misses the shot but the ump awards 50 against Howe for being in the protected zone. Oh if only.

Footy is cruel that way

FINALLY!!

How to tell if a particular league or competition is worthy of notice or attention: is there a clause in your employment contract linking bonuses to TV ratings of that competition? No = it's not worthy.

There is a correlation between games played together and overall team success. But which one is the cause? Bailey had a theory that you "just get games into them" and voila! Success after 100 games/5 years/everyone's 25yo/whatever the benchmark of the day is. Of course if you have mediocre players who aren't learning anything, a switch doesn't get magically turned on after 100 games. Brendan Bolton found that to his cost. (66 games in his case.) On the other hand, if you have players who can actually play, and coaches who can get them playing to a system, then the good players help the team win, and they get picked next week. The ones who don't get dropped or turned over. After 5 years, you've got a winning team with a core of good players who've played 100 games together. Chasing the numbers is cargo cult science.

Please, Mr Choco: Time to unleash your Kicking Skill Magic
Mazer Rackham replied to dieter's topic in Melbourne Demons
"Fremantle coach Ross Lyon made it clear it’s on the players to improve their goalkicking, as due to limitations regarding player work hours, the coaches simply don’t have enough time or access to make shots for goal a consistent formal part of training." Madness. It's like a snooker player saying there's not enough time to practice sinking balls, or a golfer saying there's not enough time to practice putting. Those guys would be looking for new jobs one week later. "[David] King said allocating time to goalkicking was clearly necessary — whether that came through contracted hours or the players using their time off to work on it." Players have to use their "time off" to practice a fundamental skill of the game? 'Fundamentally if you’re a full-forward or a centre-half forward, a forward pocket, you’ve got to convert. You can’t do that under the current program — there’s just not enough kicking being done by the current players.'" Something something cart something horse something. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2019-whos-to-blame-for-inaccurate-kicking-epidemic-and-how-it-can-be-fixed/news-story/4fdaf79cdbc2c26df92474f2fbdf3e3b -
Looks like it might be a loophole. Is this a Match conducted by the Controlling Body? Not defined. But for me, if they're using VFL umpires, VFL timekeepers, etc, in this "scratch match", then it's conducted by the Controlling Body. It's certainly against the spirit of the rules. Sanctioned by the AFL? Of course it is. What is a rule but something to be meddled with at their convenience? 22.4.4 Effect of Suspension (a) Unless Law 22.4.4(d) or 22.4.4(e) applies, a Player or Official suspended by a Controlling Body is, for the period of the suspension, or while the suspension remains unserved, prohibited from playing or participating in a Match conducted by the Controlling Body imposing the suspension and a Match conducted by any other Controlling Body. (b) Where a suspended Player or Official transfers from one Club to another Club competing in the same or another competition, the Player or Official shall complete the period of suspension with their new Club if that Club competes in a competition conducted during the same period as the Club from which the Player has transferred. Match: the contest of Australian Football played between two Teams. Controlling Body: a Controlling Body includes: (a) the AFL; (b) AFL Affiliates; (c) any league, association or body responsible for the organisation and conduct of Matches of Australian Football, who has determined to play such Matches in accordance with these Laws; and (d) any league, association or body responsible for the organisation and conduct of Matches of Australian Football which is affiliated to the AFL Affiliates.

... and a home ground in Hobart and a training facility in Hobart and a new name and new colours and a Tassie academy. (thinks: what will happen to deserted AFL home base at Arden St?)

What if Bailey then missed the goal? Anyone's crystal ball able to see if he got it or not? Lousy umpiring game after game week in week out. One bad decision should not be the catalyst for reform, but if that's what it takes, great. Meanwhile Geel & Bris can both rot. GO DEMONS!!
