Newton is still on our list for one reason, a backup for Stefan Martin if he gets injured or is in terrible form. Currently we only have a few players on our list who are capable of playing that backup ruck/big forward role that's now required. When some of the younger talls develop he won't be needed anymore, but if Martin goes down he'll come into the team. It's the reason why we chased Hale last year.

I'm not so convinced that GWs has made a formal offer to Scully, they can only afford a few top line players. What they need the most is big bodied midfielders to help protect the group of talented youngsters they'll pick up in the next two drafts. Scully does not fit that category. If I was GWS I would target Sylvia from Melbourne

I feel that this is an odd thing to say, apart from one game it really hasn't occurred to me that he has a weakness in this area and trust me I've been watching him like a hawk. I did some research on footywire and whilst it doesn't show specific stats for set shot goals he's kicked 12 goals and 6 behinds in his career to date. Those stats don't strike me as being a chronic problem. I think you're being a bit harsh on the kid http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pc-melbourne-demons--jack-watts

Sheedy Promises not to take any Essendon Players

Hurley and Pears off the top of my head. Don't underestimate their young talent which was grossly mismanaged by the previous footy dept. -

I'm pretty sure that it was a throw away line by Hird and meant to be taken as a form of humour -
True, however when a contract goes up the expecations also go up at the same rate. While it was great for a couple of years that it got him some cash it effectively ruined his career because from that time onwards it was expected that he continued to perform at that level. History shows that for a number of reasons he couldn't, both at Melbourne and Collingwood. The whole Woey saga was just incredibly sad, he should have finished his career at Melbourne and with hindsight the downhill slide started with that massive contract his manager won. I suppose there's a point to this post...oh yeah, that's it. If Scully signs a $1m a year contract over 5 or 6 years, the pressure on him to immediately produce the goods at GWS will be absolute enormous, what Woey experienced will pale into insignificance in comparison. That would be a huge amount of pressure for a young player to deal with who is still developing. This thread, i tell you what, it's like watching a train wreck; you know it's going to be bad but you just can't help yourself.

I've read every post in this thread. I don't know whether I deserve a medal or should be institutionalized. I'm leaning to the latter.

Junior has already publicly stated that he has no interest to play and will only work part time at the absolute most, he feels that he needs to take a rest before deciding what to do next in his life. Source: Sen interview with the OX last week, can't remember which day.

I kind of disagree, let me explain. It's racist if someone is offended by it. At the very least it's extremely lazy and inappropriate for a President of a well known football club to be making those comments. The comments are clearly meant as a derogatory term based on race, it would be similiar to calling Glen Waverley 'dim sim town'. Some people might take offense while others might not. Regardless it's not the type of language I'd be using in a public forum. Personally I'm not offended by it but that's not the point and my views are irrelevant for obvious reasons (caucasian background). Edit - Range Rover beat me to it.

That's a bit harsh, and my understanding completely wrong. I'm let to believe that Barassi left Melbourne because felt he had achieved everything and wanted a new challenge and this is supported by the decisions he made throughout his entire career. Perhaps I;m biased because I've had the odd beer with the great man but I'm pretty sure it wasn't money related

There's no point getting all worked up over the situation because we're not going to have a resolution until towards the end of the season, why worry over something that we have no control over? Even if he stays the best thing his manager can do is to hold off for as long as possible to maximise his contract. Sure feel free to discuss it, but the suggestion of sending Scully direct letters is monumentally stupid. Let's say the worst case scenario happens and he goes to GWS, that means he's probably already signed. What can we do? Yeah, I'll be upset and have a cry in my wheeties because he's going to be an absolute gun but the kid is entilted to live his life the way he wants to. It's his decision, no one else has the right to tell him what he has to do. Just remember this, if he does go it's because of a once in a life time opportunity to earn serious money that will set him (and his own family) up for the rest of his life, but, and this is a huge but, we don't even know if he's received this huge offer. The figures being thrown about would put him in the top 5 earners in the league, remember he is still effectively a first year player. That's a massive risk and GWS will only be able to afford one player on this type of salary (using GCS as a template) because any more than that would take a huge chunk out of their salary cap. That salary would also put massive pressure on a young kid who is still developing, there'll be instant expectations on him to perform to justify his salary, however at Melbourne he'll be left alone to develop his game without those massive pressures. If he goes to GWS on a huge contract and doesn't perform instantly then he's in the [censored]. Melbourne has done the right thing by front ending contracts, this means we can get pretty close to what I believe GWS can realistically afford to offer ($600 to $800k even that is overpaying) per year, sure we would be paying overs (as previously stated in this thread, can't remember who) but I think he'll be worth it. Once again why worry over something that we have no control over? Let the club handle the situation, I think they've done pretty well so far to earn the right.

Nab employees gets the AFL Memberships very cheaply, I think about a third off. It's a pity you didn't get a MFC membership as 100% of it goes directly to the club.

Had a quick look and the standouts to me were... - $6m increase in revenue - Increased FD related costs - $3.5m increase in overall asset position in the balance sheet - Increased profit - Decrease Westpac Bank Bills from $4.5m to $1m - Much healthier cashflow The net profit of $3.5m was great but it included a heap of one off's such as a $1m extra from the MCC for the 2009 season so it doesn't really count. The two biggest things for me are the increased position of the Balance Sheet and the reduced finance facility from Westpac. This tells us that the club is now alot stronger and less reliant on the bank, our interest costs will continue to decrease. Schwab and his team should be bloody proud of their work, they are absolute legends to get us into this position after the terrible state we were in, and in such a short amount of time as well. /Standing Ovation

Watts already works extremely hard in games, for proof go to footywire.com and compare his stats for 'at the same age' to any other key forward currently playing. He is way in front and he's only going to get better. I was one of the few here who wasn't sold on him before the draft, but now I'm well and truly converted. Just wait till his bofy fully matures, then we'll see what he's really capable of, until then he's just competing his apprenticeship.

Yah, poor old 'Fat Hands' used to cop it from all angles. Good times

I started out over there back in the 'Gutnick years', and in my opinion the place was a reflection on the state of the club at the time. A club split into two with massive infighting and hatred from both sides. The arguments on 'Ology were abrasive and repetitve but worst of all they always became extremely personal. Posters were quickly labelled as either Pro or Anti Gutnick and once done you were fair game for a tirade of abuse from the opposition. It didn't matter what the thread was about, any thread would quickly get off-topic and denigrate into personal attacks and teeing off on others whilst trying to push their own personal agenda's. From memory there were a couple of posters who were in the 'inner sanctum' of the Gutnick camp. It was exhaustive. From memory I was 'Demonheart'.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH

From memory Ben Cousins was a f/s pickup. He actually had the choice of two clubs (perhaps even three) Eagles & Geelong. -
Let me get this right...this four page (and counting) thread is about Ashley Hansen. Ashley Hansen from the Eagles?

rpfc, this post needs to be quoted again for it's accuracy. I must admit that I missed that one when I first read it but the implications are very attractive.
