Well, Bimbo, I think most of us are far more impressed by playing well when the game is actually up for grabs and not when your opponents know they have it won. Especially players that don't want to get injured on the eve of the finals.

Dermott mentioned my Mother's favourite player Des Meagher in an example, but unfortunately Dermott got it wrong. Dermott said he retired on 199 games and they wouldn't give him a 200th, because it was a GF. And nor should a player be given a 200th in a GF if he's not best 20. Clearly a GF is too important. However, Meagher didn't finish on 199, he finished on 198 and no decision had to be made because there was only one more game for the year, not the two he required. My club has been horrible with the way it's treated its players. And it's not just recently. From Greg Wells to James McDonald they've showed the world how it's not meant to be done. Even now, players like Bruce and Yze are important cogs at another club and I wonder how they view their exits from the MFC. If it was an important game with finals on the line I'd say no, but in our circumstance we'll gain much more by showing a departing player the respect he deserves. And it's not just Jamar, it's important to show his teammates that also want to see him off that we are now a club that does things properly. I'll be disappointed if he doesn't play next weekend.

I've been shocked by how bad Toumpas is. He looked really solid in junior footy. He looked composed with skill. AT AFL level he looks the complete opposite. He's terrible in contests. Is he such a head case or confidence player that he could still come good, or is he just one of those good juniors who can't cut it ? I don't know and don't much care. I'd get rid of him. If he burns us so be it. I'm so sick of keeping crap players for an eternity.

In my opinion our biggest challenge is assembling the type of leadership group that is going to consign these types of performances to the past. Your leadership group drives club culture and unfortunately ours is bereft of players that lift their teammates either across the line or back into a contest after a poor start. Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell Ling, Scarlett, Bartel, etc. Voss, Black, Scott Bros, etc. I actually believe the likes of Hogan, Brayshaw and Viney can become the type of leaders that will render these performances a thing of the past, but it will be 4-5 years before they're experienced and hardened enough to consistently perform and drive uncompromising values. Sometimes our leaders stand up, but they are nowhere near the level required to play consistent quality football or drag their teammates with them with the going gets tough. Our woes still stem from a poor LG.

Mindset lost the game not speed, and it was obvious within a few minutes of the game starting. As stated, that's not to say speed isn't an issue.

As much as I like your opening, I wonder if you were there on Saturday. I agree with you on our lack of speed, although probably not to the same extent and I think it can be quite easily fixed, however, one could tell within the first 5 minutes we hadn't turned up with any intensity whatsoever and speed had nothing to do with it. It was one of those days Melbourne supporters have seen before and you knew it really early on.

I always find this such a banal expression. Early draft picks that are clearly hopeless selections will always cop their fair share of scrutiny. Is it Toumpas' fault he was drafted early and isn't up to it ? No. Will that stop supporters venting their spleen over yet ANOTHER wasted opportunity ? Just as obviously, no. Btw, I'm not shouldering blame over the pick, as many within the industry would have made the same selection.
