2024 Preseason Training Thread
Imagine the defenders these young forwards played on..... would be pretty hard to get an accurate feel for how they will go against a proper AFL side.

2024 Preseason Training Thread
Would love to get some updates on our up and comers. Bailey Laurie, Taj Woewodin, Daniel Turner, Koltyn.... who you think could be in line for games early on

2024 Preseason Training Thread
Agreed. Viney needs to focus on handball first and only kick if required. If he had done that in the semi final we win. FYI I love Jack just needs to know his limitations.

The Premiership Window Closing?
Another side we can think about to model our future on is the Hawks. They won their first flag in 2008 with a relatively young side, not too dissimilar to our 2021 side. It then took them another 5 years to win their second flag and they then went on to win 3 straight. They actually had 9 players play in both 2008 and 2013 - Guerra, Birchall, Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Franklin, Rioli, Roughhead and Sewell. I definitely hope we don't have to wait 3 more years, but I'm definitely not panicking about the window closing yet.

The Premiership Window Closing?
I no longer believe in premiership windows opening and closing. Obviously there are instances where a club is a long way off a premiership, such as North and the Eagles, however most other teams can put themselves into the window with some savvy trading and quality drafting. With the introduction of free agency and the power the players now have, it is the easiest it has been since the introduction of the structured trading and draft system to top up with quality talent. The key area that list managers are earning their keep now is managing the salary cap, which if done well can prolong a side's window for many years. Realistically the two players from our best 22 in their twilight are May and Gawn, who I think both have 2 years of high quality footy left but may slow down after that. Therefore, our biggest need over the next two years is to either develop or trade in a quality ruckman and a quality full back. I'm sure the club have Dan Turner, Jed Adams, Will Verrall and Kyah Farris-White as potential options depending on development, however if we get to the end of 2025 and they haven't come on then we may pivot and go hunting ready to go players. I think the time when our window will absolutely be shut is when Petracca, Salem, Viney, Lever etc all hit around 32/33. I'll back Tim Lamb and Co to plan well for that though, as their track record is outstanding but I would expect we will start to miss finals around then and will need a mini rebuild. If managed well we hopefully never hit the rock bottom times like we did in 2008-2012 though....

Any word on Angus?
100%. This absolutely gutless by the AFL, who didn't want to rock the boat by going against their 'golden goose' the Collingwood FC. Fact is within their rules it states that a player must show duty of care to other players, which Maynard did not. This is an a$$ covering exercise by an organisation who are spineless. Still makes my blood boil both the AFL response and the media/wider AFL community response.

2024 Injury List
Don't think fitness was his issue. Looked to be back training yesterday.

2024 Injury List
I wouldn't be surprised if we went a bit harder on the club imposed suspension. Think 4 AFL matches minimum.

I'm also super impressed by Noah Yze. He has put on considerable size from last year! Hopefully he can get a midfield spot for the Chargers and make the Vic Metro side.

Jake Bowey Re-Signs until 2026
With Bowey, Salem, Rivers and McVee all running off half back we should be cutting team defences to shreds, but we just don't seem to utilise their speed and kicking skills enough. I really hope we can get better at this. Steven May takes way too many kick outs and I don't see him as a great short kick these days, just a good long left boot.

Dees Young Core Ranked 15th for 2024
Best way to compare them all would be looking at impact after the same amount of games/same age. JVR v Ben King - Jacob Van Rooyen and Ben King AFL Stats Comparison (footywire.com) - he has him covered in most stats and kicked almost identical goals with almost 20% less game time JVR v Max King - Jacob Van Rooyen and Max King AFL Stats Comparison (footywire.com) - again has him covered in most stats JVR v JUH - Jacob Van Rooyen and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan AFL Stats Comparison (footywire.com) - JVR wins again JVR v Amiss - Jacob Van Rooyen and Jye Amiss AFL Stats Comparison (footywire.com) - this one is tight and I'd probably give them a tie. Will be interesting to watch both their careers as they were the same draft. I won't bother with the other ones, but this shows that at the same age JVR is outperforming some of the guys who are now becoming established key forwards.

Dees Young Core Ranked 15th for 2024
I really don't GAF what this Seb bloke or anyone at SEN thinks to be honest, but I'd love to know how many teams boast 6 under 24s comfortably in the best 22 of a side that finished top 4? It's all well and good North having a heap of highly rated youngsters, but if you finish bottom 4 then who really cares? We have genuine elite young backs in Rivers, Bowey & McVee. We have one of the best young key forwards in JVR and one of the best small forwards in the keague in Kozzie. Probably the only area we are light on with talent in this age group is genuine midfielders and a key defender, but Turner and Adams could both come on in the next few years. Not to mention we have Windsor & Tholstrup who both look promising on the very little we've seen so far, so I'm not too worried about our young stocks.

Welcome to Demonland Koltyn Tholstrup
Saw that the Kolt is already getting in on the grappling sessions Vines does with his bro and Tom Mitchell. Pretty awesome for a young kid to be already putting the extras in! Think we may have a beauty here.

Welcome to Demonland Koltyn Tholstrup
Correct, the draft is based on the ladder after finals have concluded. So it just depends on how you look at it, we were top 4 after the regular season finished, but finished 6th after finals. So technically both are right, just depends how you look at it.
