I don't like them but to stop all clubs would need to agree to stop them. At least they are technically non profit ie people lower money but it is returned to a non profit spring club, not a fat cat corporation shareholders. I'd like to see all pokies owned abs run by licensed charities. At least the money would go back into a worthy cause.

Reducing Clutter on the Ground: One runner and four trainers in 2014
deanox replied to deanox's topic in Melbourne Demons
If the trainers need to they can focus on the guys who don't leave the ground as often, which was their original purpose I reckon. -
http://m.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-trainers-safety-fear-over-new-rules-20131221-2zs40.html Has anyone else read about this? I actually like the idea of reducing the runners to one and the trainers to four. The role of runners/trainers is to deliver messages or water to players who are on the ground. With the current "rotations" surely those sort of messages and the water can be delivered on the bench just as well as on the ground. Everyone gets to the bench a few times per quarter anyway.

I suggest you get a bottle of Ardberg 10. Not dissing Laproaig, but I suspect you'll enjoy the Ardberg if you like peaty malts. Salty, oily, peaty, balance is amazing. Also I am glad to see ice will not be added.

I reckon it will be close to what Gorgoroth said. Genuine adoptees? No worries. But if it is just to exploit the rule it won't be allowed.

I'm with rpfc on this. If the 4 clubs who don't need the AFL dividend want to play on their own, go for it. They aren't worth anything of they don't have tans to play against or other teams to help then saturate the market with AFL. Similarly their revenue is unnaturally inflated by the uneven draw and exposure. If all clubs got an even share of time slots, and tv telecasts, the revenue of the top 4 would be heavily reduced; less numbers through the gate, less lucrative sponsorship deals, less tv rights share. For the bottom 4 the revenue would probably go up; less TV rights share but increase in membership and sponsorship. And given time the bottom 4 would have an opportunity to grow their brand and Membership base due to exposure. Kids will follow the teams they see a lot, which means we will always struggle to make grow at the same rate as the clubs that get exposure. The bottom clubs are making sacrifices to allow the AFL and the big clubs to make more money. Without the bottom clubs the AFL and the big clubs wouldn't make anywhere near as much money. Maybe you can lose 1 but not 4 or 8. This sacrifice is not recognised by either the AFL or the big clubs.

While it isn't something that has happened as far as I am aware, can anyone confirm if adopted sons qualify under father son rules? I am sure having a son of a 1-99 game player legally adopted by another club champion around age 16 would be seriously against the spirit of the rules, but in the age of 1% advantages against the other clubs...

Yep. If an infraction notice is served against Hird, will be be liable to pay all this money back???? -

Middle of the year would be a ruin the next 3 seasons for the club. I assume if something like that happened there is a good chance the current AFL administration would fall too. Godly whoever takes over actually cats about football and not money. It may be a bad time for the AFLPA to be requesting a fixed share of income. -

Essendon coach James Hird linked to convicted drug trafficker Shane Charter Someone tell me what a pharmaceutical rep is doing dispensing nutrition and exercise advice? Or why that sort of expertise wasn't available in house? -

That's a good point. If he has been paid for the past 2-3 months then surely his suspension only counts when he stops being paid? For me, the key in who is right here will be "do the suspensions for other afl people (cuddles, bailey, Thompson, the Adelaide list manager etc.) all specify "suspended without pay" and/or were these people paid during their suspensions?" -
He is out of contact but a transfer fee is enforceable? The first time I've ever heard of that in Australian football.

I'm not convinced this definition is correct, even though it makes sense. Read my post above.

From my understanding, I think a lot of people are confused about what is actually recorded for each stat. If the below is incorrect I'd love to know the true definitions. CONTESTED- Either the ball is in dispute (ie bouncing lose around that backline or wing with no one in possession) and a player goes and gets it OR the ball is won under direct physical pressure ie contested marks. UNCONTESTED- The player gets possession from an uncontested mark from either an opposition or teammates kick, or gets a handball receive etc when not under direct physical pressure. (Ie chain of handballs) Vs HARD BALL GET- winning a contested possession under direct physical pressure LOOSE BALL GET- picking up a free bouncing ball which no one is in possession while not under physical pressure. Note that big hard ball and loose ball gets are CPs. Note 2 I can't find an official source for this, but this article from the age backs it up: http://m.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/its-easier-than-ever-to-get-a-contested-possession--stats-a-fact-20110608-1ft72.html

My problem isn't with the study of meditation. It is with the study of something that is genuine rubbish (ie astrology) with absolutely no basis and then awarding a degree in it. Theology is a worthy and genuine academic field. It is the rational study of religion, religious deities, texts and traditions and can involve research and interpretation and comparison. It is rigorously academically tested; you can't write a Theology PhD thesis saying "god is real and he is the best and he preformed miracles", because a) it can't be academically defended and b) isn't academic discussion. You could write a thesis discussing the purpose of religious beliefs, or identifying and understanding the reason for contradictory statements within religious texts etc. Meditation is a genuine and worthy topic. Its effects are studied by psychologists. Mental health, placebo effects, the importance and benefits of mental strength etc are all worthy topics studied at universities by PhD students in fields like psychology. But Parapsychic Sciences is a croc that has no basis of truth. It could be studied in a scientific manner I.e. hypotheses, tested, proved/disproved, but that isn't what this Parapsychic Science course does. It teaches astrology, divination tools and other concepts as facts. Here is the course outline and subject list for that program. http://www.aiht.edu/catalog/parapsychic_courses.asp#dpp312 There is nothing scientific about any of it. And it appears that you earn a bachelor's degree with 60 course hours, and PhD with 180 hours.

I don't want to derail this thread about meditation with discussion about homeopathy, but for my personal interest and in the interest of fairness (considering I put my 2 cents worth in) I would like to hear your case for homeopathy to see how it could possibly be justified. And I'd be interested to read any studies that show why it has to be conceded that it produces some benefits, if you can provide them. My understanding is that they don't really exist; any positive effects are rarely observed, and when they are they are the result of chance, bias or placebo, and certainly not statistically significant enough to be considered real.

I love the idea of getting our players mediating. Mental strength, the ability to deal with stress both during the week and on game day, control of anxiety, etc are important skills I hope our players learn. It's a great initiative and super important in an tight industry where mental condition may be the difference between winning a flag and missing finals.

I actually wish they would stop calling it special assistance etc. It would be nice if the AFL publicly acknowledged that the fixture is designed to make money which means that some clubs have better exposure and therefore are in s better position to make money. And that "Equalisation" is not about evening up for poor clubs, it's about repaying the small clubs the equivalent money they have lost/not earned through lack of exposure, fixture, etc which is designed to make money for the AFL. Yeah we struggle, and if all clubs were treated equal I wouldn't mind being called a basketcase. But while we are sacrificed so that the AFL , an industry can maximise profits, then we deserve to be remunerated for our losses.

Personally I'm a bit surprised and disappointed that anyone can claim the title PhD from a course run by a non accredited institution. Surely such a qualification has to meet minimum standards to be meaningful, and I'm authorised it can be legally used if bit legitimate. While I can believe extensive study and experience in the field meditation may be something someone can have, I'm not sure that "Parapsychic Sciences" is a field of study that can be backed up with real scientific evidence to claim a PhD could be achieved in that field. Maybe I'll set up the Melbourne Institute of Study and award people PhDs in whatever topic they like if they pay me for enough subjects? I'll give a great rate to demonland members on courses for my "PhD in Internet forum football knowledge" so you can change your name legally, such as to Dr Maldonboy38! natural medicine and remedies? Yeah, there are heaps of plants that have great properties, and a whole life approach to life balance and treatment can be beneficial in treating ailments, compared with taking medicines to treat symptoms but not fixing the root cause. But homeopathy? If I knew any players were doing that I'd be pretty worried. For those who don't know, a quick Google search will show that homeopathic medicines actually contain nothing. Plain water or alcohol. Nothing else. They may have started with shine of the substance in then but then are diluted to such an extent that there is nothing left. For example, 1 ml of a solution which has gone through a 30C dilution (a homeopathic term) is mathematically equivalent to 1 ml diluted into 10^54 m3 - a cube of water measuring 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10^18) metres per side, which is about 106 light years. Seems sort of pointless and I can guarantee it would have no benefit. That's not the only crazy part. Apparently the dilutions only work if you bang the solution enough times when diluting it (called "succussion"), because apparently succussion activates the "vital energy" of the diluted substance.

I instinctively went to like this post... Get on it Demonland!

Out of interest, from memory you could like a part on the forum mobile software, but you could not see the number of people who liked it. If the function cones back it would be helpful if we could see it on the mobile too! PS Nasher once again thanks for your efforts!

I don't think any reference to MFCSS is elitist, neither is a reference to 426 or the 4 Horsemen. Neither is a joke about Juice. If you don't recognise the references, you just weren't here when they started. And if you aren't sure what the mean, just PM someone and they will explain, we are a friendly bunch. I don't think Nashers joke was that bad, it might have come across slightly narky but that wasn't intentional. Just enjoy the gag and move on everybody.

As far as I am concerned it was valuable because it became or third pick which we were quite likely to need to use. If 3 weeks later we were able to sign a better option through the DFA route and that pick is no longer used then that is fine. Ok we may not have used the full value of the trade but that is because we got better value elsewhere, not because we wasted it. The Tyson deal is still not bad without that speculative late pick.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - AIDAN RILEY
deanox replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
I like this post a lot because it shows that the dumped 4 players who weren't paying AFL for 3 blokes who should play 15-20 games, and one who could play a few. In that way we have added depth, because we have an extra 4 mids to choose from because last year, with those 4 on the list, we were effectively 4 mids short. Our depth is now done of the mids that played in 2013 Add pick 9 and Riley and we have 6 potential players as depth (ie outside our best 22 that we may actually select). -
This is fantastic discussion. Congrats guys. Genuine debate and discussion in good spirits! Can I throw a spanner in the works with the stats? You can't measure some thing, and some of them are the things I don't think Jamar does well. Shepparding and bullocking and blocking at stoppages is important; Sandilands is the master of this. Jamar sort of taps then stands there.
