Scott Thompson - Would we welcome him back?
mo64 replied to The Backyard Charizard's topic in Melbourne Demons
I've never understood this line of thinking. If you were concerned about stifling the development of junior players, you wouldn't trade for 3 C Graders (Melksham, Bugg, Kennedy), as we did this year. I suspect that our talented young players will play seniors if form warrants, and it would be the fringe players that would make way for a Thompson type. If a junior player doesn't warrant senior selection, then he needs to develop at Casey. I thought the days of gifting games to kids was over after the Bailey years, but that clearly wasn't the case with the Pedersen/Weideman selection farce. -
I think our trading under Roos has been 50/50, and that's being generous. Garlett - Standout trade. Vince - Gave up a pick that netted Adelaide Matt Crouch. Win/Win Tyson - I think that this trade will be a win for us because I rate Salem highly. Let's hope that he shakes off his injuries. I was underwhelmed with this years haul off Melksham, BenKen and Bugg, and so far I've been proven right. They could all be potential list cloggers. I thought that Roos' reputation would net us a big fish. That failed to eventuate.

This year rates as a pass, but nothing more. Our list has improved since Roos took over, but that's due to our high draft picks over those years. Selection over the year was mind boggling at times. I'm not one for playing youth for youth's sake, and Pedersen's ommission after the Hawthorn and P.Adelaide games was a disgrace. Inexperience was always Roos' crutch to lean on after a poor loss. With a good matchday coach, we have the talent to make finals next year. Over to you Goodwin.

For anyone who plays Fantasy Football, Rockliff is a Dreamteam god. And because he's in your team, you tend to take special notice of him. I can't think of a player who racks up as many possessions as he does, and has so little impact. He butchers the ball more than most. I think it was also reported early in the year that he was after megabucks, so he wouldn't come cheap. I'd stay clear.

Who are the Dees chasing for 2017 and at what cost?

I was responding to your quote " I'd prefer we didn't bring in people who haven't won the ultimate thing." The capabilities of asst. coaches can't be measured by premiership success. -

Funny. Clarkson brought in the likes of Bolton, Beveridge, Yze and Bruce, none of whom had won the ultimate thing. I'm not sure how anyone can assess the capabilities of assistant coaches. -
Grimes and Trengove future rests with Goodwin

Fantastic news. I'm sure he won't be on much coin, and I reckon he could challenge the likes of AVB, Bugg and Kennedy for a regular game. -
Doesn't make a lot of sense. Prestia is a far more damaging player, and would be asking about the same as Mitchell. Maybe Prestia knocked us back, and Mitchell is the next cab off the rank.

What with, a bit of stale bread? I can't see us being ruthless, because we've pretty much re-signed everyone with currency. We may acquire some C graders through exchange of picks or offloading comparative players, but that's about it. -
Why? We didn't draft or initially develop them, which was your argument. From 2008-2011, the 9 nominees we had are either at another club, no longer playing AFL or are not in our best 22.
-
Your grasp of history is appalling. Have a look at how many nominees we had during our halcyon period of 2008 - 2013. By your reckoning, Prendergast was a genius. As others have said, the importance of a nomination means zilch. It's just recognition of a couple of good games by a player who meets the criteria.

Assume the money was intended for a drug deal, and by keeping it, you're doing a good deed.

I think that Daniel, Weitering and Parish will get more votes than Moore and Oliver. In fact, Oliver won't get a vote. Daniel may have less natural talent, but he's had a greater impact on games than the rest, and is playing in a winning team. My top 3 are Daniel, Mills, and Weitering.

Despite his improvement in the past couple of weeks, I still think O Mac is a long way short of being a reliable KPB, if we see ourselves as being a team capable of winning a final next year. He's still very raw. The mistakes that he makes are different to those of Frost and T Mac. They get undone when they try to take the game on, and as we've seen recently, that's not necessarily a bad thing. O. Mac on the other hand, misreads the flight of the ball, gets pushed off contests, and has bad disposal under pressure. Hurley and Hibberd would make a huge difference to our backline.

On Footy Classifieds, Hutchy, Barrett and Lloyd were all pumping up Melbourne, and Roos in particular. They asked Judd for his opinion, fully expecting him to agree. Judd basically said that the season should be seen as a failure because we didn't make the finals. And if we were content with our incremental improvement, we're destined for failure.

Overrated players we must not entertain during trade week

In the words of Harry Hoo from Get Smart, "Amazing". -
Are you implying that there was an issue with T Mac staying before you spoke to him?
-
I got the part about Morton correct.

The Jesse Hogan Panic Room - all contract talk here
mo64 replied to Grapeviney's topic in Melbourne Demons
Josh Mahoney was on SEN this morning to talk about the McDonald bros re-signing, but was naturally asked about Hogan. He pretty much reiterated what he's said in the past, along the lines of demonstrating to Jesse that the club is on the right path, etc. Nothing that Mahoney said suggested that Hogan had already recommitted to the club as GNF suggested. If you compare the T Mac situation to Hogan, Roos and others have always said that they expected T Mac to re-sign. I'm yet to hear anyone at the club be as definitive when discussing Hogan. I appreciate that the situations are different (Hogan still has a year to run), but everyone knows that if he doesn't re-sign before the start of next season, it will become a distraction all year. -
Same here. In terms of importance to the team, I rate him in the top 5, which would be reflected in his market value. But I don't rate him in the best 8 players at the club. His re-signing is hugely important.

You just confirmed my point. The best player in the AFL last year in Fyfe, plus Mundy, Neale, Walters, S. Hill and probably B. Hill is not a shabby midfield. If Hogan wanted to go to Freo, he'd have a better understanding of their list than you.
