History could prove every recruiting manager wrong, so why would Wisbey be any different. Wisbey has a set criteria that he believes makes an AFL footballer, but as we know, recruiting is an inexact science. As for his ratings of Swift and Blease, only time will tell, so it's no use debating whether he's right or wrong. Personally, I used to enjoy reading his analysis of potential draftees.

No Warnock, Prismall, CJ, Hislop, Nick Nat, etc

Agree entirely. I haven't accepted "honourable losses" since 1986, but after what I witnessed this season, they would be a godsend. -

Apparantly Art Vanderlay did lodge his papers for the National Draft in time, but Adrian Anderson was too busy working on the Pennski file to process them. It's disappointing for Art that he didn't get drafted. -
I was also proposing that we should have picked up a ruckman in the rookie draft. If either Jamar or Johnson get injured, or lose whatever form they have, Spencer would need to be elevated or Meesen plays as a 2nd ruckman. And if if Jamar and Johnson both go down, god help else!!!! Now Bob, try doing a similar excercise with ruckmen picked up in the Rookie draft.....
-
That was the point I was making in response to Mick, who I wrongfully thought was making comparisons in hindsight. As Rhino pointed out, rookie selections are mostly speculative, so why not punt on a player that may address our long term needs. And I would have thought that another ruckman or key forward are both long term necessaties. And how do you make an assessment of "best available" when you are talking about rookie picks, when in reality they're are pick 90ish in the draft.
-
My bad. We are talking about Jordie McKenzie, so I meant the rookie draft.
-
No I'm not. They're only better players in hindsight. Cox and Rutten were just speculative rookie listings who have turned out to be AA players in key positions. The point I'm making is that I would have liked to have seen us make a speculative choice on a tall with our 1st pick in the Rookie draft.
-
No I'd prefer a Dean Cox over an Andre Giafagna, or a Ben Rutten over a Jace Bode.
-
Maybe Collingwood were trying to pull a shifty, and hide him away. It seems odd that he didn't nominate for the ND, when he's got a burning desire to play AFL.
-
Correct. Like The Voice said, it's nothing against Jordie McKenzie. I'm talking about player type, rather than best available. We've stocked up on our mids/small defenders through the National Draft, and I would have liked to have seen us draft another tall with an X factor. And if Sibasado ends up being a poor man's Richo, Freo would be ecstatic.
-
So we're to assume that all your opinions are educated?
-
I felt the same way. After the National Draft, where we rightfully targeted mids after Watts, I thought the opportunity to go for a high risk/high reward selection with our no. 1 psd/rookie selections. We've done that with Jurrah, but played it safe with McKenzie.
-
I hope this isn't the reason why we've rookied him. If it is, we've totally lost the plot. We are a sporting club that's supposed to aspire to be the best, not a charity organization.

In the NAB or the NBA?
-
Bit harsh. He was out injured for long periods. I thought he was a pretty promising player, though I'm not sure of his positional fit in the AFL.

East Fremantle.

WJ, is Dodman a cross between Grenville Dietrich and Whale Roberts?
-
Wrong on 2 counts. Williams started his career at Carlton playing reserves footy, and was cut because he was thought to be too slow. After being picked up by Geelong and after winning the b&f, he was poached by the Swans during Edelsten's recruiting blitz. He wasn't cut by Geelong.
-
Then HT, tell us how Greg Williams started his career?
-
My point is that you've never seen them play at any level of football, let alone AFL, yet you've come to the conclusion that they're ahead of Valenti at this stage of their careers. Based on what?
-
You didn't disappoint me!!!!!!!
-
So you've already penciled in our new recruits as guaranteed AFL standard players. Good work Roost It, keep it up......
-
Very few on this site would have realised that Greg Williams actually started his career at Carlton through the zone system. And I'm pretty sure he won the B&F at Geelong in his 1st season. Peter Bell also started his career at Fremantle, and was delisted after 1 season.

timd, the reality of sport is that coaches aren't granted the luxury of time. And given our financial predicament, ongoing failure is something we can't afford. And enlighten me as to what your first statement means, because I can't comprehend it. I would have thought by the way we drafted this year, that the gameplan is obvious to everyone, yourself excluded. And yes, nobody knows how it will work. That's my concern. As far as Valenti is concerned, you are falling for the same ridiculous trap as Roost It. The players we mentioned weren't exceptional players at the same stage of their career as Valenti. I don't believe that Valenti will ever reach their heights as a player, but I believe that he can play a role in a good side. You obviously don't, so it's no point continuing to discuss it. And explain to me what relevance height has for a modern day midfielder, when contested marks are a rarity?

This is problem that I have. By the time we've developed a list that's capable of matching the style of game that this season's grand finalists are playing, the game would have evolved once again, and we may be stuck with a plethora of one "player type" that is no longer relevant. This is exactly what happened after the 2000 grand final, when Daniher felt that we needed in his words "fat-a#se midfielders". So in subsequent drafts, we acquired the likes of Thompson, Mclean, Sylvia, Moloney and Jones. The point that AOB rightfully made is that the "fat a#sed" types are not suited to a counter attacking game style. I've been making this point since the start of the season, when I've been saying that our list isn't suited to Bailey's gameplan. I'm particularly interested to see how Nathan Jones plays this year, because I believe that he's been the biggest victim of Bailey's gameplan.
