Trade & Draft Assessments
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think there is a place for Jordie in the future and am a fan of his endeavour but I would not be suprised if this is the case. Neeld is clearly pushing for bigger bodies in the midfield. For this to happen those who are less developed will not get game time in there. I expect this to affect McKenzie and Gysberts in particular. Jordies value at this time is as a tagger as well as his defensive acts. Collingwood never really played midfielders with the primary role as tagging and I would not be surpsied if Neeld is not similar mindsert. Jordies ballgetting ability's are limited and in most cases ineffective. I expect he will spend a fair chunk of the year at Casey getting more mature in body and improving his midfield craft. -
Dees find their crumbing forward - I'm rapt!

The first batch of player pre-season updates are up on the Melbourne website and have been written by the relevant positional coach for that player. Worth noting both Davey's and Blease summary are by forward coach Leigh Brown. -

The training session I attended pre-Xmas Davey (and Blease) were definitely playing the role of a small forward in the full ground match simulation. This may have been more to do with their training load rather than positional though. -

The key role of a small forward in todays game is to get to the foot of the contest when a long ball comes in and either create a scoring chance if the ball hits the ground, lock the ball in or pressure the opposition back out if they win possession. If Davey's head and heart are in for the defensive aspects of the game that were once his trademark then this is his best position. If they're not he will be at Casey. He does not have the engine to play midfield or most importantly break a tag. He will look great getting 20 kicks a game playing half back but he does not have the nature to man up when required. -

Fixed the spelling error which obviously you had need to highlight. Missed Demonators post as was scanning through and for Farmer not The Wiz. Still surprised had not been mentioned by more. -

Surprised not to see Farmer on anyones response. -
Waiting another year to make a kid captain in his 4th year is not what I would call conservative. The kid maybe ready to be captain but it may be at the expense of his own development. Another year to let him completely focus on his own abilities rather than carrying a team on his shoulders makes the most sense to me.

I think its a year too early. Make him VC this year and let him focus on improving his game and becoming an A grader first.

Thanks for posting that. The music seriously made it fell like a musical montage from an 80s movie. Love the shot 3 minutes in of our two new man mountains Clark and Sellar standing next to each other. -

"Sad" is the main one that comes to mind. -
My understanding is C7 broadcast games will all be live into VIC however not into other states. That is the real additional benefit for interstaters who love their footy Eg: Friday night footy on C7 into WA will still be at 10:30pm whereas FOX FOOTY will show the game live at 5:30pm WA time.

Interested to see which group Grimes, Petterd and Tapscott slot into when out of the rehab group. -
How many games have LJ and Wonna played in the same side if it is much more than 5 I would be suprised.Do agree it could impact him around the club though but that is not a reason to keep someone about. Its a shame when injury and application (regardless of reason) and not lack of talent sees a player delisted. This further highlights our need to draft a quality crumber. Without knowing the reason would hope he gets another chance if that is what he is looking for.

What is our perfect foward line
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to dees189227's topic in Melbourne Demons
Pretty sure thats stil the way a starting 18 is named. That set up is too top heavy (5 players 190+) and would struggle to provide the necessary defensive pressure. -

Have you seen Rose play? We have enough mid sized forwards. Petterd as a crumber is also a joke. You do not learn to be a crumber you either are or you are not. Lawrence, Wonna and Davey are all suited but all have risk in that role. Matthew Campbell as a trade would have been worthwhile. I agree a late pick or rookie to punt on one is worthwhile as we definitely have a gap there. -
This is about how I see it as well. I would be moving on at least one of Bate, Petterd, Dunn.

I disagree that half forwards are mids (although Howe may become one) but I agree that more mids are playing across half forward ie: Sylvia, Trengove.... I also agree we need a true small in that set up. Based on this there is only room for 2 of Petterd, Howe, Bate, Jurrah, Green in our forward set up.
