Just heard Sheedy is going to be an ambassador for the AFL next season, does that mean he wont have time to coach a club?

Posted

what better way to do it ( its not a full time thing anyway ) than when representing THE club celebrating 150 years ??

Posted

Good Point. Come on Sheed's come to MFC and celebrate 150 years of footy with the only club thats 150yrs old!

If gone about the right way we ( MFC ) can turn 2008 into a Demons-fest !! we can go front and centre.

does beg the question re how much time Sheedy would have available to actually coach the players. Doing the AFL 150th and MFC 150th would involve some degree of time an effort during next 12 months from end of grand final.

The absolute priority of any incoming senior coach at any club must be getting to know the players and determing what works best for the particular club and group of players and developing and putting in place particular game plans etc. Pretty demanding in 1st 1 to 2 years.

MFC players need that to get some improved consistency in their efforts. Is going to be a real challenge for MFC coach in 2008 due to 150th. Needs undivided attention or doubt players will respond! So this is of some concern in considering the Sheedy option for MFC. Looks a better fit with Freo "manager" role.

There's no way on earth Sheeds is ever going to leave his little fort up around Chirnside anytime soon. Whatever he does will be Melb based for a few years yet.

he will be the "ambassador" he will be the AFL's face of the celebrations. ffs its not a full time job !! lol its more fluff and bubbles than substance.

Sheedy has committments outside and within footy even at present. Not much would change. :-)

The article on afl.com.au (and what a pathetic website that is these days) announcing his appointment says the "AFL earmarked the Bombers' coach for this role a while ago", almost certainly while he was coaching the Bombers and it would seem that there will be no conflict. Nor would Sheedy undertake such a role if it prevented him from carrying out his coaching duties. It would be a plus for the club to its coach holding this post because the melbournefc colours and brand would be out in the public's face every time he performed a function for the AFL in this role. A win-win.

exactly what I was thinking. He might be warranted to wear a plainer AFL effort at times.. but the crafty ol fox would do what he wanted Im sure..lol.

Should..and I emphasise should Sheeds Demonise himself, it would be a coup for the club.

Never thought about that, will be interesting if he does demonise. (don't mind me belzebub just gonna borrow that word from you :) )

And these comments were made at the bottom of this unrelated story........

League delays Aker verdict

"Demetriou made the comments at the launch of a celebration of 150 years of Australian football, which will take place throughout the 2008 season.

Outgoing Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy was named as the AFL's ambassador for the 150-year celebrations,

with Demetriou saying he will fill thet role regardless of whether he gains a new coaching job before next season."

Obviously I am not sure how much extra work the role would be, but if this is believed it does seem to sound perfectly doable (hopefully)!!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
