NON-MFC: Round 5

It’s not a ‘conspiracy theory’ to think that is unconscionable that an AFL umpire, umpiring at the top level and being paid 150k a year by the AFL, also has a job at a betting company.

The betting companies are far too intertwined in the AFL as it is, but it’s simply unethical that an umpire can be employed by a betting company. It’s a massive conflict of interest.

I’m glad this story is in the public domain, and is exposing the hypocrisy of the situation.

Absolutely!

also, is this the umpire that is also a sportsbet employee to provide horse racing advice?

What is the name of the umpire?

Well it’s all out in the open now. The umpire is alleging that Butters said, “How much are they paying you?”

Ahhh ok. No umpire mic recording available which is interesting.

As I mentioned before, AFL brings this on themselves. They don’t pay so many ‘dissent’ occasions where players are full on arguing with an umpire about a decision, so it slowly escalates to allegedly comments like this and then all of a sudden it’s a problem.

Staging is also a reportable offence and that happens in every… single… F’king… game. Nobody gets reported.

Hope Butters gets off whether he did or didn’t say it because frankly if he cops a week for this whilst there’s reportable offences going on all around him that the AFL doesn’t want to deal with, then that’s rubbish.

If it’s a rule, enforce it equally. I don’t know why this is so difficult and it does my head in.

Sorry, bit of a rant, but this is all very dumb. Super frustrating.

Clarry 19 coaches votes so far.... not bad for a discard!

It certainly is dumb. With no recorded audio it’s essentially he said, she said. Butters claims to have said, “What was that free for?” Foote claims to have heard, “How much are they paying you?” Who to believe? Personally I believe Butters, and I think Foote misheard him, although the phrases don’t sound alike 🤷‍♀️

Very odd considering both Wines and Butters were right next to the ump. Telling though that Wines looked very animated with the ump straight after it and Butters looked shocked. If he did say it, you’d think they would’ve reacted differently.

Enough with the congregate round!

Rory won the Masters again!

Is he the most universally liked sportsperson going around?

Great to watch with his attacking style

it's gonna be VERY interesting to see how the afl go with this - they didn't believe collard re his homophobic slur which oddly seems to have come first one person saying it then another, rather conveniently, a week after the original accusation

I would go with the ump if he says that he heard him distinctly. I give no particular credence to Butters' mate. Butters could have kept his mouth shut and so the possibility of a mistake does not much concern me.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
